As someone who works directly in the heart of midtown Manhattan, I find that a lot of the choices for food tend to be bland, conglomerate-based, and generally just not good in terms of taste and uniqueness. Mustang Harry’s, however, does not factor into that equation, as they are one of the few eateries surrounding Penn Station that is great for many different reasons. With its spacious interior, delicious food and friendly vibes, it is definitely one of the best places to go to before the big game, concert, or just for a fun night out.
Mustang Harry’s, located on 7th Avenue between 30th and 29th Street, has a great duality to it as it acts like a fantastic after hours bar but at the same time has the elegance that a Manhattan restaurant should have. I took my friend there last night to experience what they had to offer, and overall had a great time in doing so. The bar was packed with New York Rangers fans who were enjoying a myriad of beer and spirit related options before heading to Madison Square Garden for the game. As friendly as it is to that particular kind of atmosphere, it also rings true for families, friends and tourists alike who want a chilled out place to enjoy some good grub.
The food has a “bar food” quality to it, yet is elevated and prepared very well. Here is what we recommend you get the next time you are at Mustang Harry’s, and make sure you come hungry. For their starters, their Crispy Cheese Poppers with Fresh Mozzarella, Brie & Goat Cheese with Dipping Sauce, Wings with Thai Sweet Chili and Lamb Pops with Rosemary & Garlic are three amazing choices to start your meal off. The Cheese Poppers really had a different vibe to it, as I have never had ones like these with brie & goat cheese as the filling (generally it is Mozzarella), but overall the execution was great. I am a wing lover, like freak obsessed, and the Thai Sweet Chili on top was absolutely amazing. Some of the best wings I have had in a while. Finally, The Lamb Pops were cooked perfectly and had a great side sauce to it. All great options in my opinion.
For entrees, sometimes it is good to stick with the classics and that is exactly what I did with their Reuben and a side of French Fries. For anyone craving a hearty sandwich with flavor bursting out of it, this is a great choice. It comes with Bronx Butcher Corned Beef piled high, Sauerkraut, Russian Dressing on Griddled Rye smothered with Melted Swiss Cheese. Yummy yum yumminess. If you are in a salad kind of mood, your best bet would be there Thai Steak Salad with Sesame Soy Marinated Hanger Steak, Baby Greens, Arugula, Mango, Grapefruit, Grilled Red Onions, Oven Roasted Tomatoes, Chopped Peanuts Tossed and a Ginger Lime Vinaigrette. Such a pungent salad with so many amazing ingredients inside! A definite must if you are a salad lover like I am!
I would definitely recommend Mustang Harry’s as it offers so much more than just being a bar and restaurant. For more information Mustang Harry’s, check out their official site.
