We all know that Manhattan is known for its fashion and style trends that are constantly changing. Long Islanders are constantly traveling into the best city in the world for what is next in hair, beauty and fashion as a whole. Commisso and Company is here to prove that you don’t have to do that long of a commute to get what you want for those three attributes, you can simply stay on the island and get one of the best experiences out there. After being in business for over a year in the Port Washington area, the team is looking forward to a big 2014 with their ever expanding company. I talked with Dominic of Commisso and Company about their hopeful future and the company at large. Take a look.
How long has your company been in business?
We’ve been in our current salon since September of 2012. We’ve been working in Port Washington since 1987.
How would you describe your type of salon?
A 5000 square foot upscale, full service hair salon that can accommodate any type of client from conservative to fashion forward, younger, older, men, women or children.
What do you specialize in?
Dominic doesn’t “specialize.” He’s trained in all aspects of hair design and can accommodate any client from classic men’s haircuts to bridal styling to short razor haircuts for runway models. If a client has multiple services, they’re usually with Dominic every step of the way.
Do you find the beauty business as competitive in Long Island as it is in New York City?
I believe it is more competitive because there are too many salons in Long Island and you don’t have the same volume of people here. In Manhattan, you have millions of people around you every day. No one should be in this industry or consider opening a business if they worry about competition. You have to have confidence in yourself and your training and the thing that sets you apart from the others should not be lower prices.
I also feel people should not use the phrase “my clients.” No one owns clients. People are free to go where they want and if you are confident in yourself, always be a student and do right by people, you’ll be successful in business and in life. Here is a strong unity with our entire staff. We do disagree occasionally, just like everyone else. But we’ve created an extremely professional, friendly, drama-free atmosphere. We have a huge salon, but the clients don’t lose the personal touch. No one refers to our salon as a “factory.”
Who are your inspirations?
My inspiration comes mainly from art. Art has been a hobby of mine for most of my life. I do get some ideas from vintage photography, runway fashion shows and old TV and movies.
Are you haircuts affordable for the masses?
Absolutely. I always said hair is the best accessory. People can spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on a single item of clothing, but you can’t wear the same thing every day. You wear your hair every day. Our prices are appropriate for our area and demographic. We train for months and years to perfect our craft and we take the right amount of time to do our work. It’s a very unique customer service experience and you do get a lot for the price of a haircut.
What are you hopeful for in the future?
We would like to expand to multiple locations. We have a product line that we eventually want to distribute internationally. But for now, the salon still has some room to grow. We want to train our apprentice staff. Keep doing local hair shows and photo shoots. And keep spreading the word about the Commisso brand.
