Discussing eighties television without mentioning the ground-breaking series The Golden Girls is akin to learning electrical history without Edison. Based in Miami, the show followed the daily occurrences of four distinctly different, tight knit senior citizen personalities who had about 21 minutes to solve a problem in every episode. The show lasted for 7 years and won numerous Emmy and Golden Globe Awards throughout its run. Fans continue to revisit Blanche (Rue McClanahan), Rose (Betty White), Dorothy (Bea Arthur), and Sophia (Estelle Getty), and younger audiences find new friends in what is arguably one of the smartest sitcoms in television history. Chita Rivera’s “Nowadays” at Carnegie Hall
Show queens and theater nerds were obviously in their element this past Monday evening, November 7th, when Broadway diva Chita Rivera headlined Carnegie Hall. The stage legend practically taught a master class on the way things should be done in show business. At 83, she ought to know. Theater Review: Pulitzer Prize Winner Lynn Nottage Breaks a “Sweat”
As cosmopolitan theater-goers, we have the luxury and all too often, the unfortunate oblivion when it comes to feeling the pulse of America’s heartland. Even if, as transplants, we return to our native hometowns, our conscience is somehow anesthetized to the daily harsh realities that far too many in middle America contend with on a daily basis. Theater Review: Keen Company’s “tick…tick…BOOM!”
Stories of struggling New York City musicians are as old as art itself but rarely are they interesting to anyone else but the artist telling their own stories. Cabaret stories abound that involve scrubbing pots and pans or working lousy temp jobs until the dream finally came true. This is not to demean or criticize, but it’s hard to weave an engaging, heartfelt and thoroughly entertaining narrative without interpreting it as a self-prescribed cathartic therapy session-unless you’re Jonathan Larson. Theater Review: Mary Louise Parker in “Heisenberg”
Heisenberg, the extremely human play rooted in a theory of Quantum Physics, is a mystery within itself. This is not to suggest that text is incoherent, but rather that its leading characters are so Delphic we walk away with even more questions than we did before we met them. “Oh Hello On Broadway”: Kvetching is the New Black
“Charmed, I’m sure”, says Gil Faizon (Nick Kroll) after nearly every introduction. It’s hard not to be. Faizon, along with his best friend and roommate of 40 years, George St. Geegland (John Mulaney) are the epitome of old school New Yorkers who have seen it all, know it all, and are telling it all at Broadway’s Lyceum Theater in Oh,Hello On Broadway.
