Many of us know Carmelo Anthony for being a dominant leader in the world of basketball, given that he plays for one of the biggest teams in the league- The New York Knicks. On top of the basketball world, Carmelo also dabbles in the world of professional soccer, as he is the owner of the Puerto Rican Futbol Club. In anticipation of the 59th Annual Puerto Rican Day Parade, Carmelo announced a big match that will be happening that weekend, for which he himself will be hosting.
Puerto Rico Futbol Club (PRFC) announces their first team visit to New York City to play in a pre-season match on June 11th. The Clasico De Futbol will see PRFC face off against the Puerto Rican National Team at Belson Stadium on the campus of St. Johns University, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30pm. The match is in preparation for the club’s inaugural season in the North American Soccer League (NASL). Brooklyn born Carmelo Anthony, the New York Knicks NBA All-Star and PRFC’s owner, will host the players in NYC over the National Puerto Rican Day Parade weekend.
Anthony became owner of PRFC in June 2015 and has been working closely with the NASL to introduce the team and bring energy to the growing league and global market. With New York’s strong ties to Puerto Rico and the immense popularity of the National Puerto Rican Day Parade, where Anthony has been crowned this year’s Parade King, he felt this was the perfect opportunity to introduce the island’s newest sports franchise.
“Puerto Rico is part of my heritage and in dedication of my father’s birthplace, it’s an honor to restore professional soccer with PRFC and support youth soccer projects with the Puerto Rico Football Federation,” states Carmelo Anthony. “With the Puerto Rican Day Parade being an iconic institution and America’s largest cultural celebration, we are excited for the team to participate and show our community appreciation.”
