Fans of Italian actor Monica Bellucci had the chance to see her live this past Friday night at Manhattan’s Beacon Theater. Sitting center stage on a mustard yellow couch with a gramophone beside it, Bellucci performed Maria Callas: Letters & Memoirs, a solo play in which Bellucci read actual letters and notes written by the world renowned opera star. The Wordless Symphony Orchestra provided musical interludes between the letters.
Bellucci is best known to American audiences for her roles in the films Passion of the Christ, the Matrix Reloaded, Bram Stoker’s Dracula. and the recent James Bond franchise starring Daniel Craig. In Italy and throughout Europe, she shot to stardom, first as an model and later as an actor.
Since 2019, she has been performing the homage (written and directed by Tom Volf) to Callas throughout the world. Her performance in New York was a one night only event, but it was nearly sold out.
