The Saybrook Point Inn & Spa Boasts History, Luxury & More

by Ryan Shea

Although the winter time this year seems more like an Indian Summer with the weather we have been having lately, it is still good for us to get out of New York City and vacation elsewhere to get yourself out of the concrete jungle and somewhere that is much more relaxing regardless of the temperature.  Luckily enough, there is a great location right outside New York City that takes roughly 90 minutes to get to via Amtrak and has so many amenities and bonuses to it that you will leave feeling invigorated, satisfied and above all… happy.  This is The Saybrook Point Inn & Spa, located in the heart of Old Saybrook, Connecticut.

Old Saybrook, which is famous for being the birthplace to legendary actress Katherine Hepburn, is in itself a great place to visit even if you aren’t staying at the Inn & Spa.  Not that I would recommend that of course, as it is simply divine staying at the location, but the town is petite in size yet has an amazing small town feel to it that evokes similar towns that I grew up around on Long Island.  Just this past weekend they had a Torchlight Parade, smack dab in the middle of town on Main Street, a holiday tradition in their town, which included holiday floats, bagpipes and more as several locals celebrated the season.  We also dined at a local favorite called Penny Lane Pub, which boasted some pretty great quality pub fare that we enjoyed heavily.

But, enough about the town- let’s chat about The Saybrook Point Inn & Spa!  For me, the experience was summed up like this- “A beautiful atmosphere surrounded by water”, which is exactly what you get upon check in.  Right in the heart of the Connecticut River and The Long Island Sound, The Saybrook Point Inn & Spa lets you escape your troubles and brings you into its warm elements from the rooms, food & drink, spas, fire pits and more.

The variety of rooms that you can stay in are quite immaculate, and unique if I must say so myself.  One that is completely out of the ordinary that I found absolutely fascinating was there Lighthouse Suite which literally situates you in a beautiful suite on their main dock!  Per their website– Located outside of the main building, the Lighthouse Suite is the most intimate and unique of all our accommodations on property. Situated on the main dock, this suite boasts unobstructed views of the Long Island Sound and Connecticut River wherever you look. With a living room, dining area, and kitchenette available, you have 900 square feet of space to call your own. Although this suite is currently closed until the Spring, it was something that I was truly taken by as i have never seen a suite done like this before.  And to wake up to being surrounded by the beautiful water isn’t such a bad thing either.

Located inside the Main Inn you have your bevy of rooms to choose from, including everything from their standard rooms to their Full One Bedroom suites.  If it is within your price range, I would go with their Junior Luxury Suite as its selling point is the views of the waterway below.  Check out the shot that I took as a great example.  Is there anything better to wake up to?  I don’t think so.  On top of their fantastic suites and rooms, they have also developed a phenomenal concept situated right next to the main inn called Tall Tales and Three Stories.  Per the site,  Tall Tales, which is set to open up in Spring 2016,  will feature six rooms including a beautiful one bedroom suite on the third floor, as well as several common areas, including a game room. It also offers spectacular water views of Saybrook Point Marina and South Cove.  Definitely be on the lookout for that.

Three Stories is a sight to see just based on views alone. Something that makes this entire location, including the inn, just so darn inviting is the bright colors that they use on each building.  When it comes to Three Stories, consider it your home away from home.  Stacked on three different floors (hence stories), Three Stories reads itself as an innovative B&B per se, with their rooms beautifully adorned to fit the Old Saybrook way of living.  Fully furnished fireplaces, heated floors and full body spray showers are just some of the amenities you will be provided with when you stay at one Three Stories locations.  Whether it is their Deluxe, Luxury or Elegant accommodations, you will sure be taken care of wonderfully.  Be sure to say hi to Mrs. Pratt, who operates the facilities, and is someone I am auditioning to be my next Grandma as she is simply one of the nicest and kindest people I have ever met and someone who is very passionate about Three Stories as well.

Regarding food, you have to try out their restaurant located inside the main inn called Fresh Salt.  Check out my yummy review that I did here for more information on the best dishes to eat there.  Something that really stood out for me at Saybrook Point is their Spa, also located right inside the main building called SANNO.  What i have gotten from Saybrook Point Inn & Spa is that they want you to have the best of many worlds, all within a 50-100 foot walk.  Sanno is a beautiful spa, with several different packages available at your disposal.  If you want something simple like a mani or pedi, go for it.  The specialists are beyond friendly and do a fine job if I may say so myself.  If you are yearning for something more, treat yourself to a massage.  If you are there with your boyfriend or girlfriend, The SANNO Couple’s massage is the best way to go as you get 50 minutes of pure relaxation as their experts navigate your problem areas and make them feel so much better in under an hour.  After you are done, I recommend getting a nice drink and hanging by the Fire Bar, which is located on the terrace of the Saybrook Point Inn & Spa.  Relax and enjoy the sunset of the Long Island Sound with your friends and family.  It is really amazing.

The location itself also hosts a heated indoor and outdoor pool, hot tubs, and a fully furnished gym to work those delicious calories off.  It is a great place to have a meetings, events and weddings at, as their banquet hall is spacious in size and provides a great place for your friends and family to enjoy your special day.  Just this past Saturday there were two weddings held in the afternoon and it couldn’t have been more perfect with how great the location was paired with the weather outside.  Overall, you have to try Saybrook Point Inn & Spa out, you won’t be disappointed.
