Now, more than ever, Manhattanites are looking to get out of the city and travel with friends and family across the nation and beyond for a great getaway. As someone who has written in depth before about how great California is to spend some time in, particularly San Francisco, another great area not too far away to enjoy is Viansa Sonoma, a mere 35 minutes away from SF. If you don’t want to go the distance and see Italia, then Viansa Sonoma is a another great choice for vineyards, wetlands, and so much more that to see in the heart of one of the most stunning places our country has to offer. Here is what makes them so amazing.

From the beginning Viansa stood as a beacon to the Wine Country. They were among the first of the wineries along the Sonoma Pass and since their first vine planting have been about the gathering of family and friends to eat, drink, and stay throughout the day. They are all about what makes Sonoma shine — the miraculous views, the luscious vines, and the beautiful wines.
From their hilltop, they invite you to take in 270˚ views of Sonoma Valley. Gaze down upon the “King’s Highway” leading the way to the northernmost California mission of the El Camino Real, approximately 113 acres of their own wetlands, which are home to a variety of indigenous water fowl and plants; and our estate vines planted along the rolling hills and neighboring vineyards of Sonoma Valley.

In 2015, they replanted their estate vineyards with 10 acres of Pinot Noir and 15 acres of Chardonnay. The varietals, clones and their root stock were specifically selected to complement our soils of Goulding clay loam and Reyes silty clay. The replanting project not only allowed them to select varietals known to thrive in the Carneros region, but also improve their vineyard practices and process. Through the use of recycled compost they added natural nutrients to the soil, they built in a 6 mile drainage system that allows them to better manage, direct and ultimately limit their water usage and waste. A special fence was installed to help protect our fruit from deer and the deer from accessing the highway. A state-of-the-art trellis system along with their drip irrigation system helps further reduce their water usage while allowing us to focus on the quality of our fruit. Lastly, 2, 550 pounds of soil builder cover crops were planted to further improve the nutrient structure of the soil and help minimize wind erosion and soil erosion on their hillside vineyards.
