Celebrate National Tequila Day at Fusion Fun Spot Mexicue

by Ryan Shea

So many things to celebrate in July.  National Ice Cream Month, my birthday (big 30!), the fact that I’m still single and sexy, and one more thing… National Tequila Day!  Yes the day to celebrate many people’s liquor of choice is coming up on July 24th, and one of our favorite fusion hot spots in Manhattan is doing something big to celebrate the big day.  This would be Mexicue, which has plenty of locations sprawled across Manhattan for you to enjoy the Mexican-Barbeque amazement that is who they are!

Not familiar with Mexicue?  Let’s get the introductions out of the way.  Thomas Kelly, owner of Mexicue, is the brainchild behind this great concept.  Something that started only a couple of years ago as a food truck, Mexicue started gaining a ton of praise and feedback throughout the New York City area that allowed them to open up brick and mortars throughout the city, one in particular being their located on 26th and 5th Avenue.  With the expansion to the restaurant side, it has given them the opportunity to have a liquor program, which leads them to the wonderful world of National Tequila Day.

I stopped by with a friend yesterday to get a sampling of what they will be offering on National Tequila Day and beyond, and was quite impressed by the high level and taste of the dishes presented that anyone who loves Mexican, Barbeque or both, can appreciate.  Let’s start with the less obvious here- the food!

Some of the dishes that they presented that i really love include their Tuna Ceviche Nachos, Jambalaya Enchilada and Burnt Ends Chili Bowl.  The Tuna Ceviche Nachos really had quite a lot of flavor and depth to them, not to mention the amount of food you can pile into one bite with the tuna, chipotle sauce and watermelon radish chips that really makes it an exceptional starter.  The Burnt Ends Chili Bowl was amazing as well, as it is packed with so much yumminess including lime crema, manchengo, house pickled peppers, and more. Deelish.  The standout was their Jambalaya Enchilada, which is packed with smoked chicken, chorizo, manchengo & jack, and Mexican jambalaya.  So much heat from all the flavors yet it doesn’t burn your palate.  Super important for anyone who fears that kind of heat- DON’T.

On the tequila side, they have so many amazing options to try that even the pickiest of people will not be let down.  Their  Smoky Margarita, Spicy Margarita, Grapefruit Paloma, and Mezcal Manhattan are all great options, as well as their killer Jungle Juice.   Sweet with a zing of tequila in each, you will really enjoy what all of these dishes and drinks have to offer with your friends and family!  Definitely a place I recommend checking out that day, and all others days as well.
