Can’t get to the Caribbean anytime soon, Manhattanites? Fear not, because there is one spot located right here in New York City that can smooth those island troubles away. This place is called Angel of Harlem, which is located on the corner of 122nd Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard. I am officially naming this one of Manhattan Digest’s “Spots for the Summer” as it encompasses so much life inside of it in terms of color, mood and cuisine, that it is bound to be one the places you make a reservation for over the next couple of months.
There is so much that I like about this spot that go beyond the regular food and beverage aspect which primarily is the reason we go to restaurants in the first place. The colors that is used throughout this corner location is quite beautiful, with soft blues and yellows adorning the chairs and walls. Smack dab in the middle is their gorgeous bar, which is perfect for the after hours crowd not to mention the amazing DJ that they have which spins some of my favorite R&B and hip-hop music from the 80’s and 90’s.

Angel of Harlem has been open for a couple of years now, and doesn’t show any signs of stopping. One other reason for this is the bevy of fabulous food they provided us with during our dinner there the other night. As with so many other restaurants here in New York City, Angel of Harlem prides itself on sourcing local ingredients for their modern American cuisine with touches of Caribbean & Latin influences inside each dish they provide. The “think local, shop local” concept continues to thrive in Manhattan, and I’m glad its made its way to Harlem.

Here is the breakdown of what we think you should get. Their assortment of Flatbreads can either be a perfect starter meal or even one that you have as a meal itself, as it can be just that good. Look at the photo above for further references. They also have two different types of wings available at your disposal- one that is guava and the other is buffalo sauce. If you are more of a mild wing type person, then guava is the name of the game here. The buffalo one is spicy for sure, but not too overpowering. I prefer the former, but whatever floats your boat!

For their entrees, they have a scrumptious Lemon Butter Chicken with a side of mashed potatoes that is cooked to absolute perfection with both items marrying each other extremely well. If you are more of a salad kind of person for your entree, then I recommend you trying their Angel Salad that comes with Roasted Pear, Green Olives, Diced Tomatoes, Feta Cheese and Lemon Balsamic Dressing. Add some Shrimp to this to give it an extra kick, and you will find yourself with a healthy salad that has the benefits of tasting great.
