The Big Apple is a well known hub for architectural marvels from the Charging Bull on Wall Street to the skyscrapers that dot the horizon. The city will once again be holding it’s “Archtober” event the entire month of October, featuring a delightful variety of education and entertainment all focused on one of the many aspects that makes this island one of the world’s most astounding locations.
It doesn’t take a bachelor of architecture to appreciate the intricate and masterful designs featured all over the city, though it might help, making this event perfect for anyone looking to truly explore the marvels that can only be found here in NYC.
A City Wide Event

Archtober will take place throughout all five boroughs as it highlights a “building of the day” with walking tours during the entire month. The Bronx River House, Staten Island Courthouse, and Cathedral of Saint John the Divine are all on the roster for this year’s event. Plenty more are part of the lineup, spanning from Queens to Morningside Heights and beyond.
The 14th and 15th of October will also allow the public to catch an intimate glimpse of the insides of some of New York’s best known buildings, many of which are not usually open to the general public. This rare opportunity will be provided by Open House New York.
Series and Events
Part of what keeps New York in the mainstay of architectural wonder is the many firms that spawn these awe inspiring buildings. A new series titled “Workplace Wednesdays” will expose the inside of these firms’ studios with workshops and presentations. Each week will feature a different participating company.
For those more interested in the rich history behind some of the city’s more prominent buildings, Classic Harbor Line will be offering daily boat tours packed to the brim with facts about Manhattan’s skyline.
Seasonal Activities
Fall ushers in the season of pumpkin and apple treats. Archtober will offer seasonal activities including a pumpkin carving competition where anyone can show off their creativity while having a little fun at the same time.
Those who prefer the art of baking can try their hand at the Great Architectural Bake-off, while those who would like to test their knowledge can participate in a trivia night on New York’s build environment hosted by experts in the industry.
Can’t Miss Highlights
As a partner organisation of Archtober, the Guggenheim Museum will open its doors after hours for a tour like no other, detailing the features that have made and will continue to make it such a prominent part of the city’s architectural prowess.
Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum will also be holding its National Design Awards Gala, while the Modernism in America Awards can be seen via Docomomo US. If you’ve ever wanted to see some of the top renowned works up close and personal, this is a once in a lifetime (or at least once a year) chance to do so.

Architecture and Design
Archtober encompasses the diversity of institutions that create and engage in New York’s architectural community. The program is designed to energize enthusiasts and professionals as well as spur an interest in part of what makes this city such a beautiful, serene location.
With over 70 organizations and businesses partnering this year, it’s going to be the biggest Archtober yet. If you have an eye for architecture and design, or simply want to get a better appreciation for the city, don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity. If you can’t make it out this year, subscribe to the event’s blog over at archtober.org and get daily updates.
