Flex Mussels, located in the West Village on West 13th street between 6th and 7th Avenue, has a variety of delicious mussels of course, but wait… there’s so much more!
Flex Mussels actually has two locations spread across Manhattan: one in the West Village and one in the Upper East Side on East 82nd Street. The focus is on the former this go around, as I took myself there on a warm spring evening this past Saturday and flexed my culinary muscles to see just how delicious and tasty their mussels were.
This concept, which originated far from New York City in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island was brought to our not so humble abode many years ago so that Manhattanites and its millions of tourists could experience the vast array of mussels and seafood options as much as their heart desired.
Here’s what’s amazing, though. Flex Mussels doesn’t just come steeped in 4 or 5 different sauces to choose from. Oh no. There are 23 freaking different ones to dive into! That is mussel heaven, and that’s not even the entire menu!
The look of Flex Mussels rings true to several other restaurants that inhabit the West Village: intimate, relaxed and moderately sized. It was perfect after the busy day that I had as I was able to truly enjoy the atmosphere that was provided as each dish came out.
Let’s get down to brass tax. The mussels at Flex Mussels are arranged in four different categories: Flexy, Tomato, Creamy and White Wine. So for instance, you can try a dijon flavor, a Thai one with a coconut curry broth or even a Mexican with chorizo and calamari. Yum!
There are other options worth noting that will get your taste buds going prior to you diving into all things mussels. Their Little Gem Salad, which comes with lobster, red onion, pecorino romano cheese and a lemon champagne vinaigrette is light and fresh and perfect for the season we are in right now. Also, if you are not in the mood for something fishy, their Farmer’s Chicken with sauteed kale, mashed potatoes and herbed jus is finger licking good. Some of the best chicken skin I have had in a while.
There is dessert, and that dessert is in the form of… DONUTS! Your best bet would be to try the Peanut Butter & Jelly and Fluffernutter kinds, as they are stuffed with all things that are right in the world. Flex Mussels is definitely a spot you are going to want to go to for all the reasons listed above and more.
