Broadway Superstars Andy Karl & Orfeh on Being “Legally Bound”

by Ryan Shea

If there was a superlative for “Broadway’s Cutest Couple” it would easily be Orfeh and Andy Karl!  Both are Tony Award nominees, both are superbly, talented, and both are incredibly good looking!  What could get any better than that?  I’ll tell you what:  them doing an album together!  Yes, this lovely couple has released their first album together called Orfeh & Andy Karl: Legally Bound – Live at Feinstein’s/54 Below, which shows the couple taking on some of the biggest standards from all types of music in an absolutely incredible way.

I recently sat down with this incredible duo about the album itself as well as how they met, favorite things about each other, and so much more.  Take a look!

Is this your first collaboration with just the two of you on one record?

Orfeh: This is our first collaboration for a full-length CD that’s just ours …. obviously we’ve been on other CDs together in the past and Andy has sang on some of my recordings …but this is definitely our first Full length collaboration.

I get the whole “Legally Bound” thing as the two of you are married.  How did you guys meet and was it love at first sight?

Orfeh: We met during the run of Saturday Night Fever when Andy came in to replace one of the original cast members that was playing “Joey.” And I had heard so much great buzz about Andy, he had a fantastic reputation, but once I actually met him, as crazy as this sounds, it was indeed love at first sight.  Given the way things turned out, I’m going to have to guess the feeling was mutual 😉

What’s the best thing about each other, both professionally and personally?

Orfeh: Andy is as funny offstage (if not more so) than he is on stage and kind and smart.

Andy: Orfeh (besides having the greatest voice I’ve ever heard), is probably the coolest person on this or any other planet and she smells really good all the time. She’s also generous to a flaw.

Regarding “Legally Bound”, what was the process in determining the tracks for the album?

Andy: Well, in the beginning, we didn’t set out to make this into a CD, that organically happened along the way.  After the second show, we realized this might make a really great CD for at home enjoyment but we did painstakingly pick the songs for the concert itself and we picked songs/a set list filled with songs we loved to hear, songs we loved to sing and songs we thought the audience would really enjoy and thankfully it worked out for the best.

Do each of you have a favorite track from the album, and why?

Orfeh: It changes for both of us all the time but I think my favorite to sing was “I’m Your Baby Tonight”.

Andy: “Seeing You” will always hold a special place in my heart for many, many reasons and I think we both enjoyed singing the One Direction song “History“, it was definitely our favorite duet and I think the most surprising for the crowd.

Both of you have had major success in the theatre world, any chance you want to make that hop and skip elsewhere?

Orfeh: I think we’d both like to do a lot more film and television and Andy’s amazing experience playing Sergeant Mike Dodds on season 17 of Law & Order: SVU only adds fuel to that desire.

What do each of you have coming up in 2017 and beyond?

Andy: There will definitely be more concerts, somethings in the works for me I can’t talk about yet that I’ve been working on for a while and again fingers crossed more film and television in both of our futures.

Final question, and this is important: what’s your favorite restaurant in Manhattan to chow down at?

Orfeh: That’s a long list but if we had to pick the ODEON downtown and Tony’s Di Napoli Midtown! Augustine (new) has THE best brunch we’ve had in a long time.
