Theater Review: “That Golden Girls Show! A Puppet Parody”

by Ryan Leeds

Golden Girls

Discussing eighties television without mentioning the ground-breaking series The Golden Girls is akin to learning electrical history without Edison.  Based in Miami, the show followed the daily occurrences of four distinctly different, tight knit senior citizen personalities who had about 21 minutes to solve a problem in every episode. The show lasted for 7 years and won numerous Emmy and Golden Globe Awards throughout its run.  Fans continue to revisit Blanche (Rue McClanahan), Rose (Betty White), Dorothy (Bea Arthur), and Sophia (Estelle Getty), and younger audiences find new friends in what is arguably one of the smartest sitcoms in television history. Hector Frank’s Portraits: Celebrating Cuba, Celebrating People

by Jessica Klein

Hector, Hector Frank

Hector Frank’s portraits are as colorful as the Havana you can see when searching Google images. by Ryan Leeds

Chita Rivera

Show queens and theater nerds were obviously in their element this past Monday evening, November 7th, when Broadway diva Chita Rivera headlined Carnegie Hall. The stage legend practically taught a master class on the way things should be done in show business. At 83, she ought to know. In a evening entitled “Nowadays”, Rivera took a thrilling and reflective walk down memory lane, recalling her leading roles in West Side Story, Sweet Charity, Chicago, The Visit, Kiss of the Spider Woman, The Rink, and Bye, Bye Birdie. Theater Review: Pulitzer Prize Winner Lynn Nottage Breaks a “Sweat”

by Ryan Leeds

Sweat

As cosmopolitan theater-goers, we have the luxury and all too often, the unfortunate oblivion when it comes to feeling the pulse of America’s heartland.  Even if, as transplants, we return to our native hometowns, our conscience is somehow anesthetized to the daily harsh realities that far too many in middle America contend with on a daily basis.
