Those that got a chance to attend the J. Hernandez and Sons (named for the brand’s father-son distiller duo of Jesus Hernandez and Jesus Hernandez Jr.) Pop-Up Bodega in Brooklyn this week were gifted with a great night of food, drink, and music. Part of a continued series that started in April, the pop-up bodega series has been going to several major cities across the country, providing people with the irresistible taste of Altos Tequila, one of Mexico’s premiere liquors. Opening for two nights in six different cities, the brand has appeared in Los Angeles, Denver, Austin, and Nashville before coming to New York, right before making its final stop in Chicago. With these events, Altos Tequila is ardently trying to communicate a strong honor for community. [Read more…] about J. Hernandez and Sons’ Pop-Up Brings Community and Spice To Brooklyn
Inspiration is Key for The Tyler Robinson Foundation
The latest project to be headlined by the Tyler Robinson Foundation, an organization that’s sole mission is to help families suffering from pediatric cancer, is a highly ambitious cross-country tour. Simply titled Operation: Road Trip, the project will see members of the foundation driving along the east coast to a variety of hospitals where they will award hefty grants and share stories to affected families. While similar to a bike campaign that the foundation sponsored in 2015 (referred to as CanCo), this year’s road trip plans on taking it to a much higher level. Bowl & Blade: Park Slope’s New Stop for a Healthy Multi-Cultural Bowl
Hosting an eclectic range of fruits, vegetables and meats, and pulling ideas from cuisines that range from Korea to Hawaii, Bowl & Blade might make for the most ambitious concept for a quick service outlet to come down the pipe in a while. “After working in fine dining world for the last 10 years, I wanted to take what I learned and bring it to a quick service,” explains founder-and-chef Adin Langille. “I wanted to make profit with great product.” [Read more…] about Bowl & Blade: Park Slope’s New Stop for a Healthy Multi-Cultural Bowl
Annual Point Honors Gala Celebrates LGBTQ Culture in Uncertain Times
This year’s annual Point Honors Gala – sponsored by Point Foundation, the nation’s largest scholarship-granting organazation for LGBTQ students – was certainly a joyous celebration, despite the heavy air of paranoia that has been gripping the community. Speaker Jorge Valencia even started his presentation by saying, “We are living in a country where we’re told that facts are fake. And if you don’t like the reality you’re living in, all you have to do is choose an alternate one.” Still, the performers all presented confidently, and stressed the accomplishments of people under the Point Foundation banner. Mama Juke: Debuting With a Live Record
This Friday will see both the official release of Mama Juke’s album Live from Unit-J, as well as an album release show at Rockwood Music Hall. When asked as to why the band had chosen to make their debut album a live-in-concert LP, founding member Amos Rose explained it as such: “We wanted to broadcast this album into outer space to let life on other planets know that there’s life on Earth, and it’s at Unit-J.” [Read more…] about Mama Juke: Debuting With a Live Record
John Dewar and Sons Whiskey Emporium – Spicing Up Greenpoint
Those that attended this past Sunday’s Taste Williamsburg Greenpoint were certain to have had a satisfying experience. The warm weather, eclectic group of vendors, and generally welcoming atmosphere made for an enjoyable afternoon in the last throes of summer. In fact, one of the day’s most alluring stands came from John Dewar and Sons Traveling Whisky Emporium, which was conveniently placed right in the middle of the festival grounds. Those that went to this particular attraction were likely to leave with a spring in their step, and a little inkling of history in their thoughts. Sweet Megg & The Wayfarers: Why This Jazz Band Finds Brooklyn Home
On first sight, Megg Farrell (frontwoman of the aptly titled Sweet Megg & The Wayfarers) may not appear to be a jazz singer. With her nose ring, considerable height, and youthful demeanor, she looks like she could just as easily be a member of a Bikini Kill cover band, rather than a purveyor of a more “old-timey” sound. Upon hearing Megg sing, however, one becomes easily swept into her aesthetics of banjos and rag-time, as frankly she has pipes like Billie Holiday. Nuyorican Poets Cafe & SummerStage: An Evening of Fury and Joy
On Wednesday August 9th, the Nuyorican Cafe and SummerStage teamed up to give the East River Amphitheater a free night of poetry readings from a trio of reputable New York-based artists. It was an evening of soul, politicized anger, and raw emotion, and shined a tiny beacon of hope for our world in this most uncertain time. Panorama Festival 2017: A Joyous Overview
For the second annual Panorama Festival, the Randalls Island-based three-day musical festival brought to us by the Coachella promoters Goldenvoice, the results were remarkably positive and propulsive all weekend. Sticking with the areas that made last year’s Panorama such a success for concert goers (excellent space management, minimal set over-lap, wide-spread appeal with artist selection), this sophomore year was just as enjoyable and well thought-out as last year’s, and may have even presented some wiser decisions regarding scheduling.
