Krave & Kulture- The Next Great Gay Brand for Men’s Clothing

by Ryan Shea

Krave & Kulture, Manhattan Digest

In recent years, gay men’s fashion has been primarily designated to one or two different companies who keep coming out with the same tired formats for the same tired types of guys.  Luckily, there is a new west coast brand that in a short matter of time will be making quite the buzz on both coasts and internationally as well.  This is called Krave & Kulture, which is based in San Diego, California.

Krave & Kulture was recently started by business partners David Quintanilla and Bryan Miller, who took clever print designs and is turning them into something that will become red hot in the ever popular world of T-Shirts and accessories.  The bold and unique concepts are perfect now that the weather is finally becoming warmer in the east coast, and will be a topic of conversation at many upcoming gay events such as Bear Week in Provincetown and all the circuit parties here on Fire Island.  What is even better is that Krave & Kulture doesn’t discriminate when it comes to body size, something that other brands tend to do (yet they never admit it).  Their sizes run from Small to XXL and are designed to fit each and every type of guy.  Smart advertising if I may say so myself.

I sat down with David & Bryan to discuss Krave & Kulture as a whole, the concepts behind all of it and its hopeful future in 2015 and beyond.  Take a look.

So tell me how the concept of Krave & Kulture started for both of you?

David- I’m a photographer and a graphic designer by trade.  I wanted to come up with another way to put my designs on something other than a canvas or gallery wall so I started coming up with a concept of making clothing with my images.  Bryan and I had been friends for quite a while, and when I was sitting down with him and picking his brain about the business, he had a lot of really good information to offer.  He had just left a corporate job from a major corporation and slowly we started developing a business plan which organically turned into a partnership.

When you start any type of a brand there are usually people or companies that inspire you to do this line of work.  Who were your inspirations?

David- That is something that makes us a little bit different is that the inspiration for Krave & Kulture isn’t really other designers or brands.  We get inspired by art, and being in the gay culture we are inspired by masculinity, testosterone and being around men.  Also, we started off with the idea of the west coast culture and kind of lifestyle here which is why we decided to do ready to wear as opposed to going down other avenues.

How did you guys come up with the name “Krave & Kulture”?

David- Krave & Kulture was basically was one of several names that was trying to embody what we are trying to do.  The idea of doing something fresh, bold yet casual and easy for guys.  We developed this around a subculture of men who wanted casual clothing that was really cool but easy.  Not to endlessly figure out what goes with what, but just throw on a top and go to the beach, bar, coffee shop or a nightclub with it on for instance.  So the idea of craving that kind of culture is where that came from and we decided to spell it with K to add a little flare.

Sometimes gay brands tend to skew towards a skinnier and much more lean demographic, yet I noticed that your sizes run from small to XXL.  Did you have a strategy from the get go to include all different sizes for the gay community?

Yep, absolutely.  That was the whole goal from the beginning is that if we were going to do this that we would create designs for guys who felt comfortable in it.  There is a big bear community not only in San Diego but in the entire country and we wanted to identify that.  The clothes shouldn’t be just designed for the Abercrombie & Fitch type model, there are regular guys who wanted to be seen in those cool types of shirts.

An average gay brand would carry extra smalls, smalls and mediums whereas we decided to start with small and work our way up to XXL, just because for the bigger guys it is more about comfort and is designed to fit them perfectly.  I am a bigger guy myself so I like my shirt to be tight on the arms, tight on the chest but a little bit of room in the stomach area.  I designed them selfishly I guess because I wanted to feel as comfortable in them as the rest of the guys who were trying them on.  This also carries to our accessory line as well, because there is a lot of times where guys have bigger wrists.  We have two sizes available- standard and thick, so we want to have guys who have thicker wrists feel welcomed as well to try them on.

How do you guys go into designing the shirts and accessories?

David- The designs on the shirts for this Spring and Summer collection are four collections. One of them is nautical, we wanted to design around the sea and the ocean.  If you look at some of the stuff, we reference old school tattoos such as anchors amongst others.  Another collection is Popart, so like a balloon dog with a Ken Doll on it.  Like a fun conversation piece with a bold graphic on it.  The other two collections are phrases, whether they are funny or conversation starters.  The other side of it is that we offer full print photo shirts.  So I take my photography and manipulate it and make some pretty cool graphic on the shirts.

You are based in San Diego, do you have a storefront there or are you based remotely?

David- Our business plan is to sell wholesale to retailers.  As of right now, we don’t have any plans to become a storefront, however we just want to make this available for the general population of the United States and internationally, so we started with the online store.

Krave & Kulture, Manhattan Digest
Credit to: Krave & Kulture

What are your hopeful goals for Krave & Kulture going into the rest of 2015 and beyond?

Bryan- We’ve got a plan in place that is going to help us not only create a presence on the west coast but hopefully everywhere.  We started speaking out to different retailers, some that have picked us up, and our goal really is to expand it as far as we humanly can.  When that business picks up we want to expand our line and do more than T-shirts and accessories.  We don’t just want to be known for just those things, we want to be known as a lifestyle store and work with those guys in the demographics that we discussed to be able to have some really  cool and edgy items to wear in their everyday lives.

If you happen to be in the San Diego area today, Krave & Kulture are having their first launch party at Urban Mo’s located at 308 University Avenue.

The Best New Barber Shop has Arrived in Hell’s Kitchen

by Ryan Leeds

Some people take the Myers- Briggs test and read What Color Is Your Parachute to determine their life’s occupation. Others seek the advice of a guidance counselor or spend hundreds of dollars on career counseling in search of the perfect job. For an unfortunate few, they toil unhappily in a mundane desk job for years on end, until their dream diminishes like Jon Secada from the Top 40 list.

Boswell Scot took an easier and much more practical approach. At the age of 23, after being laid off from his office job, he sat down with a piece of paper and made a list of all the people he knew and their vocation. “I decided that my barber had the most fun job,” he said. “Think about it. You get to stand around, talking to people all day, and get paid for it!” Shortly thereafter, he enrolled in barber school in his home state of Florida.

In 2007, with 5 years of hair-cutting under his belt, the savvy St. Petersburg native packed his shears and barbicide and moved to New York City, where he worked at upscale salons downtown. “It was always a dream to open my own shop,” the ebullient thirty-something remarked. Eight years later, his dream is fully realized. At the beginning of February 2015, Scot opened Best Barber, an upscale, yet approachable and unpretentious full service grooming shop in Manhattan’s trendy Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood. The space, located between 48th and 49th street on 10th avenue, offers a clean straightforward approach and look. Beautiful wood floors and bare white walls envelop the space with a simple neon light near the front announcing its’ name.

While the neighborhood’s demographic is predominantly gay, Scott eschews the title of  “gay barber shop” and instead promotes himself as the “every-man” of barbering. “My clientele ranges. I have both gay and straight men who stop by. My female clients also make appointments. Basically, anyone who wants to be treated well and receive a great cut is welcome here.” His hospitable  attitude speaks for itself. Nearly all of his former downtown clients have followed Scot to the new midtown spot . The difference is in the customer service. “Most shops in this area aren’t as personable,” he observed. “They just point to a waiting chair when you go in, and have very little interaction once you’re seated in the barber chair. You’re really more like a number than a person.” At Best Barber, his welcoming staff offers you coffee or water while you wait, and make an effort to get to know you. Plus, they use square software to create appointments, which is seamless for both his staff and his clients.

In his thirteen years of hair trimming, Scot has become a default therapist. “I’ve heard an earful from some clients,” he smiles. “People tend to reveal very personal information with me. I once had a lady, on her first visit, admit to having an affair.” Clearly, Scot’s natural charisma and cheery charm lend themselves to confessionals.

In preparing for his own business-and even now, the entrepreneur  actually visits other shops to get his own haircut and encourages his staff to do the same. “I think it’s important to gain an understanding of how it feels to be a client.” Since opening his doors in February, Scot’s staff continues to grow and he has recently added a fourth barber to his roster.

The Williamsburg resident travels each day to his midtown shop, where, in addition to barber services, he carries a complete line of Malin and Goetz products. “I have always been a huge fan of their line,” he said. “Not only do they make fine quality products, but the look of their packaging fits in nicely with the aesthetic of my shop.”

On a personal note, this journalist was treated to the full “Best Barber” experience. My hair is thinning and there seems to be little hope. Scot  put my fears at rest, assuring me that it is “confidence that makes the man and not a receding hairline.” Consequently, I have rarely received so many compliments on a haircut in the days following. In bold, white letters on the shop’s front window is a quote (printed in all capital letters): “HANDSOME MADE SIMPLE.” With a master like Boswell Scot at the helm, who am I to argue?

Best Barber is located at 694 Tenth Avenue between 48th and 49th streets.

Galli Livens Up The Lower East Side With Its Scrumptious Brunch

by Ryan Shea

Galli, Manhattan Digest

The Lower East Side continues to be a thriving part of New York City when it comes to trends like food, fashion and architecture.  Something that goes beyond the trend that Manhattanites have enjoyed for years upon years is the weekend brunch that we all love for mutliple reasons (alcohol in the morning, eggs in the afternoon, both if ya nasty).  Luckily a great new spot has opened that combines everyone’s love for Brunch and then some.  I am talking about Galli, located on 98 Rivington Street between Orchard & Ludlow.

Manhattan Digest, Galli
Credit to: Brandsway Creative

Easily accessible on multiple subways (I prefer the F to Essex/Delancey), Galli is a great new addition to the LES with its basic black structure and homey type environment.  I also love the window aspect as it gives a great view of outside world of the Lower East Side.  Now let’s discuss the food as that is what made the overall experience fantastic when me and my friend visited.

Gaii, Manhattan Digest
Credit to: Brandsway Creative

Two starters that work for both brunch and lunch are their delicious rice balls in a savory marinara sauce and their Carciofi which is pan fried artichoke, parmigiano with a side of chipotle mayo.  I have never had artichokes pan fried before and it was absolutely delicious.  For your main course, I would highly recommend what is pictured above- The Breakfast Bucatini.  This consists of Bucatini pasta, bacon, romano infused cream cheese and a fried egg.  A classic spin on both pasta and eggs with a great twist that is absolutely delicious.  For a more classic approach with no spin, the steak and quail eggs with asparagus on top is great example of keeping it simple yet tasty.  For dessert, try the Tiramisu.  Great way to end the meal.

Check out the official site and if you are ever in the LES check them out!  Such a great Italian spot!

Not traveling or able to make the fabulous Warren Tricomi location at LGA?  There are plenty more in the Manhattan area for you to divulge and try.  I highly recommend experiencing the Flatiron district one, as myself and a friend were treated to a fantastic wash and trim there recently.  The space itself was spacious, beautiful and clean throughout.  The staff also was incredibly helpful in our time there and both me and my friend had individual stylists who understood our needs and finished with a great result nonetheless.

Road To The Oscars- GQ’s “Style Guy” Glenn O’Brien

by Ryan Shea

GQ, Glenn O'Brien, Manhattan Digest

Oscar Season is in full swing!  The nominees have been announced, the fashions are being critiqued and gagged over on a weekly basis now (SAG’s, Golden Globes, Critics Choice) all leading up to the big night in February when The 2015 Oscars are held live.

When it comes to mens styling in all forms of the word, trust no other than the GQ “Style Guy” himself- Glenn O’Brien.  A writer of not only fashion but art and culture, he even wrote a book about style with the name nickname, “Style Guy”.  Glenn was nice enough to sit down with Manhattan Digest to discuss all the hooplah around award season, who his best dressed has been so far, and why Dove Men + Care is a great solution for the everyday man to feel like a star.  Take a look.

Hey Glenn, thanks for stopping by! So with award season in full effect, have you noticed a trend with the male stars on the carpet?

So far into this season the men seem to be going for a more traditional tux look and less of the lone wolf experimental fashion trend.  We’ve seen mostly black and midnight blue traditional tuxes, and the bow tie seems to have taken some ground back from the long tie—and it really does look a lot better.  We
also see that beards have gone mainstream, but men on the whole seem better groomed—even allowing for the fact that these are actors who may be in the middle of playing a mountain man or
medieval king.

You are known as the “Style Guy” at GQ. What 4 keywords would you use to describe a guy having really great style and why?

Great style is about individuality, a personal taste (not a hired stylist’s taste,) a relaxed attitude and attention to detail (in dressing and grooming.)

In terms of styling who has gotten it right so far this year and who do you think needs some improvement?

I would give the men from whole awards season so far a B plus for looking formal and proper, for dressing for the occasion and not maximum media exposure.  For some reason some of the older guys really get it right—Michael Keaton looks incredible fit, wears his clothes perfectly and his grooming minimizes his age and his, well, dearth of hair.  Jeff Goldblum looked better than anyone—elegant and fit with old Hollywood level elegance.  I think the super-skinny suit and thin tie sometimes backfires.  It made Justin Theroux look a bit Pee Wee Herman.  Ty Burrell wore a vest with his tux, avoiding the white shirt showing under the jacket button like Jim Parsons and so many others.  Look at Zach
Galifianakis—he looked so good he could turn into a romantic leading man.

Do you think men should go outside the grain and try some pops of color on the red carpet, like Jared Leto just did at the Critics Choice Awards a little while back?

It’s risky.  Adrian Brody in all that silver and black looked like he was at a Long Island wedding.  Matthew McConaughey was handsome and well groomed, but his medium blue jacket had a pattern that strobed, and if you’re going to wear a vest which is fine, I prefer a jacket that’s buttoned.

Glenn O'Brien, Manhattan Digest, GQ
Credit to: Glenn O’Brien

What advice do you give to men who aspire to look like their favorite male celebrity?

The man walking these red carpets range from teenagers to real veterans like Robert Duvall, but they all owe a lot of their success to the ability to look good at all times.  If you’re not acting, you’re up for casting.  You have to always be on, always be ready.  That means cleansing your face properly. Dove Men+Care Clean + Face Scrub cleans deep, it exfoliates with pumice, and it moisturizes—leaving the skin not only clean and lively but natural looking.

Any products you recommend them trying?

I would recommend Dove Men+Care Fortifying Styling Gel—which helps achieve a defined, strong hold—for quite a few of these guys. James Righton’s hair shot straight up in the air. He definitely looked taller than Keira Knightly, his gal, but I would have liked to see a more polished style.  Ed Norton could have used a bit more hair control. Eddie Redmayne also has a slightly complex hairstyle, but his looked right because it was artfully tousled and stayed in place, which is why men use a good styling product. For texture and volume I like the Dove Men+Care Fortifying Styling Paste.  It gives structure without being shiny.  And the Dove Thickening Spray Gel gives you shape without stiffness or stickiness.

For Dove Men + Care are there products you recommend men trying during the harsh winter season?

Winter is all about moisturizing, so I like a rich cream. Dove Men+Care has a new Ultra-Hydrating Cream, which keeps skin moisturized for 24 hours.

Anything else to add?

The men are lucky they don’t get asked to go on the “shoe cam” or the “mani-cam.”

Eataly- Your One Stop Shop For All Things Delicious

by Ryan Shea

Eataly, Manhattan Digest

As someone who has become an unfortunate jaded New Yorker in some aspects, I was delighted to discover for the first time the essence and variety that is Eataly.  Eataly is unlike anything I have seen before in New York, where they pair off the freshest variety in foods for you to bring home right next to mini restaurants that boasts the same type of food you are about to eat.  Sounds confusing right?  It isnt.  To me, when I went inside Eataly I felt like I was in a mixture of Fairway/Whole Foods type of a Supermarket (without the shallowness and annoying people in it) mixed with anything from great pizzeria to a delicious sweet shoppe and everything in between.  For a real foodie (hate it or love that word) it is sort of like you are walking into Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, although instead of it being just chocolate it is every type of yummy food imaginable.

Before me and my friend roamed around the location, we sat down to eat dinner at one of their seven restaurants called “La Pizza & La Pasta”.  We were excited to see what they were going to present us, as they were located right next to all the delicious take home pastas, sauces, and anything else Italian related out there.  Suggestions that I would make to my readers if they choose this restaurant upon entrance at Eataly are the Caprese as theirs is done with a bit of a twist, using heirloom tomatoes and a zesty and delicious champagne vinaigrette to go along with.  For “The Pizza” section, all of them look absolutely splendid however I would recommend trying the Salsiccciotta.  This is made with Tomato Sauce, Mozzarella, Eataly Housemade Sweet Italian Sausage, Mushrooms and Basil.  What is fantastic about this pizza is that each ingredient really shines when you take a bite, which can be unlikely with some pizzas because there can be one that outshadows the other.  For the Pasta section, you can’t get any better or more traditional than their Ravioli.  It is their housemade one that comes with Spring Pea, Ricotta, Pecorino, and mint with butter and peas.  For something that doesn’t have a meat option, the Eataly ravioli was far and by superb in taste and contrast in flavors.  Overall a 9/10 in my book.

Something me and my friend also discovered while we were there was the Nutella bar, nudged in a corner of Eataly.  As someone who is a bit of a Nutella “nut” per se I was completely excited to see what they had to offer.  You literally walk in to a room full of jars of Nutella (heavy breathing) and a simple yet cute bar with 8 different ways you can experience Nutella via Eataly.  You can have it in Brioche form (Croissant filled with Nutella), or you can try it in Tortina Margherita form (muffin spread with Nutella) if that spikes your fancy.  For me and my friend we simply beelined for the Crepe option, where I had mine filled with warm Nutella and Banana slices.  Unreal taste- warm, hazelnutty, just crazy good.  A perfect way to finish off a great meal at both of these locations.

Eataly boasts a ton of fresh food on top of the great restaurants they provide as well.  While you are there you can shop for anything from top of the line fish and meat items, fresh pasta, coffees, sweets, decor and even take a cooking class or two.  They are pretty much your one stop shop for all things delicious.  I would definitely recommend anyone going, bringing a big group of friends and seeing what all the great hype is about.  Worth the visit for sure.

New York Fashion Week: Todd Snyder Review

by Ryan Shea

Todd Snyder, Manhattan Digest

Fashion week is in full swing here in New York City!  Some of the biggest names in the industry to the green and up and coming designers have brought out their best of the best for what is to come for Spring 2015.  My good friend and top of the line photographer Jason Jaskot was able to cover some of the best and the brightest shows, one in particular being menswear designer Todd Snyder.

Here is a little more of a background about Todd Snyder via his website–

Iowa native Todd Snyder launched his eponymous menswear collection exclusively at Bergdorf Goodman, Ron Herman, and Neiman Marcus for Fall 2011. Inspired by Savile Row craftsmanship, military tailoring, and a distinct New York sensibility, the line has garnered wide critical and commercial praise in the US. In 2012, the line was picked up by Barneys New York and select Nordstrom stores; simultaneously, Snyder was nominated for the CFDA Swarovski Award for Menswear and named one of GQ’s Best New Menswear Designers. More recently, Snyder was selected as one of the 2013 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalists. During that time he launched his Todd Snyder + Champion collaboration with the iconic Rochester, NY-based sportswear brand, and opened his first New York boutique, called City Gym, at 242 Elizabeth Street in NoLiTa.

This success is a humbling reaffirmation of Snyder’s roots. In Dutch, his surname means “one who makes outer garments” and while studying textile and clothing design at Iowa State University, Snyder learned the art of cutting and sewing at the Des Moines haberdashery Badowers. He spent the following two decades honing his skills in New York, designing outerwear for Polo Ralph Lauren, working as Director of Menswear for the Gap, and SVP of menswear at J. Crew, where he revamped men’s styling, introduced formalwear, and launched a series of collaborations with heritage brands like Timex, Red Wing, Thomas Mason, and Alden that culminated in the popular Liquor Store boutique, opened in 2008. At the helm of his own brand, Snyder still strives to deliver on the rubric set forth by his Badowers mentor: “A perfectly fitted suit makes the man.”

Todd’s collection looked phenomenal, totally modern and tailored for the everyday man.  His use of the standard colors were elevated to another level and overall from the looks of the photos this seems like this will be a big hit with consumers worldwide.

Todd has recently collaborated with notable sportswear company Champion.  As stated on the website, “Inspired by Champion’s Glory Days, each piece is a collectible part of sartorial history and has been made for the maximum amount of versatility and utility.”
