Charity, Music, and Prom; My interview with Brittany Smooch

by Ryan Shea

Brittany Smooch
Brittany Smooch

Brittany Smooch is a young, up and coming teen pop star and Hip Hop artist.  Brittany’s music is fun and catchy and her personality is similar.  I had the pleasure of speaking to Brittany yesterday about her music and charity work she has participated in.  On the phone, Brittany seems sweet and determined.  She knows what her goals are and she is pursuing them with great success.  Brittany recently did work with the WGirls for their charity Project G.L.A.M, which gives prom dresses and accessories to girls who can not afford them. You can check it out at http://www.wgirls.org/get-involved/project-glam/

As soon as Brittany answered I knew she was going to be fun to interview.

When did you get into hip-hop?

I have always been into hip-hop music.  But when I started writing my own songs it just came out that way.  It just sounded like a rap.

When did you know you wanted to pursue a career in music?

I have been involved in music my whole life!  At 5 years old I was taking singing lessons and by 7 I was writing my own music.  I have always known that this is what I wanted to do.

Who is your favorite rapper?

Oh my God!  I have so many favorites.  But I guess if I had to pick it would be T.I.  He is amazing!

You have a unique Urban style, where do you love to shop?

I love Patricia Field.  They have a store in the City and the clothes are so crazy and cool.  I really like anything that has a unique feel.  I also really like Betsey Johnson.

Brittany Smooch

How did you become involved with the WGirls and Project G.L.A.M?

I have always been involved with charity work.  I really enjoy it.  I was working with the NY city charity NY Cares and when the chance to do Project G.L.A.M came along I took it.  Its really an awesome charity and I love being able to help young girls.

This charity is so amazing, and it must have been cool to see the girls faces as they got their dresses, how was that?

Seeing their faces was priceless.  Watching the girls try on dresses and find ones they loved was really exciting.

What did you wear to your prom?

Well, I’ve actually been to a few proms.  But my favorite dress was one I wore to a Long Island prom.  It was really girly and looked like a Princess dress.  It was pink and lacey.  Usually I don’t like really girly clothes but this dress was beautiful and really made me feel like a princess.

Do you have any advice for prom goers this year?

“Don’t fall into peer pressure.”  Have fun and enjoy this time in your life but don’t think you have to do something you don’t want to.  That is really important to me.

What do you have coming up?

Well, I just released my EP and now I am working on my new album.  I just finished up my High School concert tour and am getting ready for my next performance.  I am performing at Six Flags Boston on June 29th.

Who would you love to collaborate with?

Well of course, T.I. since he’s my favorite rapper, but I also think it would be really cool to work with powerful women in music.  I’d love to do something with Nicki Minaj, Fergie, or Britney Spears.

What is one lyric to describe your life right now?

It would definitely have to be the chorus of my song, “Super Turned Up.”  Because that’s how everything in my life is right now, “Super Turned Up.”

“Making Bacon”, by Big Ronnie

by Ryan Shea

As you saw in my last post, I’ve had a great time lately with my new smoker.  This past weekend was the best however, as I’ve upped my manliness by learning how to cure and smoke Bacon.

For the prep, I ordered a simple curing kit complete with everything you need from BaconKit.com.  I cured the pork belly in my refrigerator for one week using the included plastic bag and curing mixture (salt and sugar).

From www.baconkit.com – “baconkit + pork = homemade bacon! It’s that easy. The kit contains everything you need to make 5 lbs of delicious homemade bacon. The only fresh ingredient you need to purchase is pork belly which can be obtained easily at most supermarkets and butchers. If you need help finding it please check here or email us and we’ll be happy to help.  The kit was in fact as easy to use as advertised.  I was away in Phoenix, AZ last week for a trade show and was curing the bacon while I was away.

As you can see from the photos below, cured bacon is darker than fresh pork belly.  The last thing to do was get it in the smoker and cook it at 200 degrees to an internal temperature of 140 degrees.

After smoking, I rested the bacon in the refrigerator as instructed.  After 30m, I sliced some, cut off the skin and fried it up.  The result was fantastic.

Fresh 5.2lb Pork Belly
After 1w of curing
Pork Belly hitting the grill with a 6lb Rib Roast
After 2h of smoke
Smoked and rested
Sliced & Ready to Fry
Fry it up
Yum!

Chatty Talk with Elise – Boston & Texas Edition

Boston Logo

Heyyy ya’ll!

I know you usually come to me for the who’s dating who in the celebrity world but today I want to take some time & just express my love for Boston!  I know that it may be difficult for so many of  you to believe in humanity after all that has been happening recently but please try to remember that good always wins, always.  They will find those responsible, you have to believe & trust that.  Just keep everyone in your hearts & send kind thought their way in this time of need.  Keep your head held high & know… This won’t stop that city, nothing can stop that city.

While touching on recent events, it’s only appropriate to also mention the devastating explosion that took place in the early hours of today, in West, Texas. A fertilizer plant exploded, killing as many as 15 people & injuring more than 160 others plus destroying at least 75 houses & multiple businesses.  In such a small town, this will certainly hit most, if not all the people of West in some shape or form.  Coming from a small town myself, I also know that the community will pull together & have each others backs & they will be better & stronger because that’s what communities do, they pull together.

Album Review: Blake Shelton’s “Based On A True Story”

by Pamela Gordon

Courtesy of tasteofcountry.com
Courtesy of tasteofcountry.com

Blake Shelton’s new album “Based on a True Story,” is a bit like a roller coaster.  You go up, up, up but occasionally you go down a bit too much.   Don’t get me wrong, it still has great moments, but on some of the tracks I want to shake him around and ask him “WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!?!”

Opening up with “Boys ‘Round Here” rubbed me the wrong way.  It seems to be crawling next to the category of country/pop.  Not that there is anything wrong with a little pop, but I expected a little more from Shelton, especially on an opening track.  What he follows up shortly with thereafter is like a car crash that I can’t stop looking at, whilst shaking my head in disgust.

I understand why he decided to record “Small Town Big Time”, he missed home while taping “The Voice” in Hollywood and how importance is on materialistic items and not life. But the auto-tune was unnecessary.  I could go on for days on how much I loathe auto-tune, but I will spare you all.  To have an artist like Blake Shelton use auto-tune strictly for proving a point and not having to cover up a voice, because he does have a great voice, is not acceptable by me.  It brings down not only the song, but Shelton himself.  The point was taken through the lyrics of the song,

With them red Maserati’s and them tuned up bodies
And everybody gonna be the next somebody
Yea, this place is a trip
Hey but meanwhile back in the stick

Somebody’s having a small town big time night
Somebody’s rocking the main street with red tail lights
Somebody’s cranking it up or falling in love
Or keeping the buzz sipping on a little moonlight.

Other than these down points, there are some great tracks on the album.  “Frame of Mine” emulates the old country western sound, showing off Shelton’s vocal capability.  Or during the ballad of “Do You Remember,”  I can feel his strong sense of love and devotion being eluded to, that he once had.  During “My Eyes,” Shelton shares the microphone with Gwen Sebastian and harmonies about taking everything except for his eyes off that one special lady.  Probably my favorite is “Lay Low”, while Shelton swoons from note to note, with the same sounds of one of my favorite tracks by Josh Turner “Your Man”.  Although having its own entity, it shares something which brings that classic ballad to my heart.

I may have sounded a bit condescending starting this review off, and I have to somewhat revise my tone.  I really do enjoy listening to the album, but those two tracks stick out so much it left me with a bad taste on my tongue.  But looking at the album as a whole, it does show the ability of Shelton’s talent and devotion for love and country music.

Margaret Thatcher

Hello & welcome back!! Let’s begin with the week(or weeks!) in review, shall we? !

Margaret Thatcher just recently passed away, at the age of 87.  For those of you living under a rock, she was a British politician who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990 and the Leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990.  She was a magnificent human being & may she rest in peace.

The 2013 MTV Movie Awards Red Carpet

by Ryan Shea

The 2013 MTV Movie Awards were last night at the fashion never fails to intrigue me.  The MTV Movie Awards bring out all walks of the celebrity life.  From movie stars to musicians to your favorite reality stars.  There were a few great ensembles on the red carpet last night and, true to Movie Awards tradition, there were some outlandish fashion train wrecks!

Actress Crystal Reed looked classy and trendy in her coral and nude lace overlay dress.  The bottom was pumped up with a tulle and looked like a beautiful tutu.  And the nude pumps made her legs looking miles long!

Bridesmaids’ Melissa McCarthy rocked all black with gold accessories.  I think the was a great pick for Melissa the funny girl looks slim and glowing!

Model Karlie Kloss’ all white skirt and crop top was sexy!  The shoes were by far my favorite part of the outfit!  I am obsessed with ankle straps right now!  So chic.

My best dressed male goes to my secret crush … The legendary Taylor Hanson!  He is so handsome and well dressed.  This MMMbop boy surely grew into one handsome man.

And now for the worst of the worst … drum roll please !

Ke$ha…

What is this chick thinking?  I think she is so talented and beautiful and yet she insists on looking like a hobo.

You would never believe this girl had hit songs almost every other month.  Apparently hippies have gone goth, which is not a good look!  I don’t know what the worst part of this look is … the hat … no the fringe vest … nope definitely the pants … This outfit is just all wrong!

Ke$ha

This next one is really hard for me to do … I am absolutely head over heels with musician Macklemore.  I think his style and look are perfection, most of the time.  I love his swag and his ginger features!  But his outfit last night was really disappointing.  The royal blue did look cool but the cape was such a let down.  I would have rathered a big fur jacket and a onesie.

Don’t worry though I still love you!

Thrift Shop rapper Macklemore

There’s always one who has to be a statement maker, and expecting it to be Lady Gaga again, I was surprised to see a burnt cigarette butt hat on Pitch Perfect’s Hana Mae Lee.  Lee was one of my favorite characters in Pitch Perfect and her one liners were the most laughable moments in the movie.  My favorite line “I ate my twin in the womb.”  Befitting to her character’s, shall we say, uniqueness, Mae Lee rocks a interesting hat at the Movie Awards.

Hana Mae Lee

Last night’s MTV Movie Award fashion definitely had some note worthy looks.  But the overall trend for the awards had to be the pointy toe pump.  I have to say I was a little worried about this trend coming back but the new style of pointed toe pumps has a shorter point and is something I am actually excited to try out.

Kim Kardashian really was the first celebrity to rock this look when she stepped out in her neon green Loubitan’s.  Last night she showed off her baby bump in a sleek black dress and black satin pointed toe stiletto’s.

Kim Kardasian
Kim Kardasian

Carrie actress Chloe Moretz kept it casual in a denim romper by Louis Vuitton and stunning t-strap pointed toe pumps.  The shoes were the focal point in this outfit, beautiful!

Chloe Moretz

Kim K in training younger sister Kylie Jenner looked fabulous in her nude pencil skirt and white crop top.  The nude pointed toe heels were to die for!  I am absolutely passionate about these pumps.  I must go buy a pair now!!

Kylie Jenner
Kylie Jenner

I have to say, I am totally into trying out this re imagined trend.  The only issue I have is after I take my shoes off at the end of the night they usually get thrown in a pile of my collection of shoes and then they get all smushed.  After they are flattened enough you can never get your toe in right and if someone steps on it, forget it, a little heel dent can ruin a pair of pointed toe heels.  Luckily in my never ending online shopping habit, I found the answer!  http://www.tiptopshoesaver.com/ sells all different tools to keep your hoes in new condition.  Their product, conveniently titled, The Tip Toe Shoe Saver, is a triangular piece that you insert into the toe area of a pointed toe shoe to keep the shape.  I ordered a pair and can’t wait to use them in my new heels.

So all in all, I think the fashion at the MTV Movie Awards last night was interesting, but slightly disappointing.  The one’s that got it right last night definitely brought in the Spring 2013 trends.  White was big and nudes, as well.  For accessories, I was happy to see the ankle stap and pointed toe heels were back and modern.

*Just on a side-note, I’d like to send my prayers out to the families involved in the tragic terrorist bombing at the 2013 Boston Marathon today.  This is a sad and frightening event and if there is anyway I can help I will and hope my fellow Americans will do the same.

Coachella 2013; What to Wear

by Ryan Shea

It’s almost time for Coachella!  A three day music festival whose line up consists of hip-hop acts like 2 Chainz to House DJ’s like Benny Benassi.  The festival made papers last year when a Tupac hologram took center stage.

Fashion also ranges at this music festival because of the diverse music fans who attend.  The crowd includes Urban fans, preppy fans, hippies, and celebrities.  If you are planning on attending this grand music festival then I suggest you read on to find out what you should be wearing!

For the girls;

Sundresses are always a go to option for Coachella, mini or maxi.  I would accessorize with denim and boots (combat or cowboy).

Crocheted dresses are airy and easy to dance around in!

The Hippie look is huge at these festivals so feel free to throw some flowers in your hair and pack a pair of hemp sandals.

Another staple item for Coachella 2013 is my favorite… The high waisted denim short!  Pair with a crocheted halter, vintage band tee, or even just a bikini top and you can’t go wrong.

The rocker look is another fashion option at Coachella.

I suggest leather shorts and anything with studs paired with combat boots.

Bright colors and tutus are big for the rave lovers.  Most importantly for the ravers is arm candy!  Lots and lots of bright bracelets.

For the boys…

Denim jeans and a sleeveless graphic top work best.  Not only does it look hot but with the heat sleeveless helps with the sweating.

Hats and backpacks are the perfect male accessory for Coachella, as well as a cool belt.

And most important for boys and girls …

A KILLER PAIR OF SHADES!!

Check out some of the looks I put together and enjoy the show!
