Kim Kardashian’s Charitable Spirit To Be Applauded

by Blair Kaplan

Don’t get me wrong, I am not Kim Kardashian’s biggest fan. I don’t agree with her over the top affairs (72-day wedding anyone?), her multitude of daily wardrobe changes, or her obsession with all things vain. So I have to say I was most surprised when I found myself coming to her defense.

Let me be the first one to say that the amount of money that the Kardashian family makes per year is staggering to say the least. While many agree that the famous clan is famous for nothing, it cannot be denied that the Kardashian family members have successfully marketed themselves all the way to the bank. And while I will never begrudge anyone of their wealth (after all we live in a country that prides itself in the American dream), it is understandable that when another has such a large amount of money we expect them to be generous. But I found it hugely shameful that many jumped on Kim for an act of charity.

This past week Kardashian announced that she would auction off some of her designer wardrobe on eBay to benefit victims of Typhoon Haiyan, a storm, which devastated the Philippines.

On her website Kardashian explained her altruistic plan:

“Hi guys, this is a very special auction because a portion of the proceeds of my eBay auction are going to International Medical Corps., a nonprofit organization that provides critical health services on remote islands where families are struggling to access medical care and basic resources like food, clean drinking water and vital medications,” she wrote. “The proceeds will go directly to the communities they’re serving in the Philippines and will help typhoon survivors get access to medical care and ultimately save lives. My prayers and thoughts are with those affected by the typhoon.”

It would seem that because Kardashian was thinking of others aside from herself, we would all applaud such a positive action from such a seemingly materialistic person. However this proved not to be the case. The masses were quick to attack Kardashian for only donating 10% of the auction’s proceeds to charity, calling her vile, and mocking her for lacking generosity.

A rep for Kardashian found the backlash to be disappointing and expressed frustration that she had become an “easy target” for criticism. What many may not realize is that this act of charity is not a first for Kardashian. Inspired by her late father, Robert Kardashian, she has consistently given away 10% of proceeds from auctions she holds on eBay throughout the year. Although the proceeds of her auctions generally benefit her church, she decided to donate the money for this particular auction to a charity benefitting a current global disaster.

That’s why as far as I’m concerned we should be ashamed of ourselves. When did we begin to judge one another for giving in the first place? Sure Kardashian could afford to donate more from a financial prospective, but how many of us have sat silently while others, less fortunate than ourselves, could have used anything that we could have afforded to give? How many of us who continually point fingers and judge have kept that 10% for ourselves? Wake up guys! Sure wealth is relative, but generosity and a giving heart is not. You either give or you don’t. And Kim Kardashian has given when she had every opportunity (and every right as far as I’m concerned) not to. As long as we continue to judge or criticize another person for their kindness, we remain the problem.

During this holiday season (and always,) I urge each and every one of you to put your proverbial money where your mouth is. Rather than pass judgment on someone for giving, get off your asses and give of yourself. You don’t need millions, or even thousands; all you need is your time. Let’s spread positivity and encouragement towards one another; anything helps. As I said, I may not be her biggest fan, but I’ll be the first to applaud Kardashian’s recent actions, and I suggest you be the second.

Kim Kardashian is Engaged to Kanye West

by Blair Kaplan

According to multiple sources, rapper Kanye West took a break from his “Yeezus” tour on Monday, to propose to his girlfriend of over a year, reality star, Kim Kardashian. The proposal took place at San Francisco’s A T & T Park, which he rented out on Kardashian’s 33rd birthday.

West and Kardashian went public with their relationship in early 2012, and are parents to 4-month old daughter, Nori.

This will be the third marriage for Kardashian, who was married to music producer, Damon Thomas, until 2004, and in 2011, infamously married basketball player, Kris Humphries, in a marriage that lasted just 72 days. Humphries failed to obtain an annulment, despite claiming that the marriage was a fraud. Their divorce was finalized earlier this year.

The news of an engagement comes just weeks after Kardashian’s mother, Kris Jenner, and step-father, Bruce Jenner, announced their separation after 22 years of marriage. It also comes after months of sister, Khloe Kardashian Odom and husband, basketball player, Lamar Odom, publicly struggling with their marriage amid Lamar’s rumored problems with drug addiction.

West, who has reportedly refused to show their daughter, Nori, on Keeping up with the Kardashians, has often made mention of his desire for privacy in his life. He recently told Jimmy Kimmel that he cares about “protecting [his] family…protecting [his] girl…protecting [his] baby…” Only time will tell if this need to maintain a private, and protective lifestyle will hold true for their nuptials, or if they will wed in true Kardashian style. Either way, the world will be watching and waiting.

Kim Kardashian & the Focus on Celebrity Post-Baby Body is Worrisome

by Blair Kaplan

Credit: US Magazine
Credit: US Weekly

The ongoing attention that the media has granted to Hollywood’s finest post-baby bodies worries me. A lot. Our society has always held harsh criticism regarding women’s bodies, but the criticism of women’s bodies amid one of the most natural acts of life, demonstrates that we have now reached an all-time low.

Just about every other article written about pop-culture these days seems to focus not on the charitable work of celebrities, or more realistically on their careers (can you imagine focusing on those?!), but on “who wore it best”, who has the “best bikini body”, and how beautiful women like Kate Middleton, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, and Malin Akerman look mere weeks after giving birth.

As if this weren’t bad enough, celebrities are now often weight-shamed while pregnant with their offspring. Jessica Simpson and Kim Kardashian are both examples of famous mothers-to-be whose bodies were analyzed and criticized for their “with-child” figures, often called names such as “fat” and “disgusting.”

While we have almost always been a society vastly concerned with what is on the outside, often basing our values of ourselves and others on physical appearance, this unhealthy perception that flat tummies and full lips make us better people, has only grown more concerning in recent years. Open a magazine or turn on a television and you will be hard-pressed not to understand, or to even buy into these negative feelings yourself.

Some defend such critiques with the age-old notion that celebrities are “different,” that they “signed up” for such scrutiny, or that their bodies and their weight are their job; that we shouldn’t be comparing ourselves to such unrealistic standards. Yet this extreme focus on our bodies is constantly in front of our faces.

We could blame the media outlets and the magazines for reporting on such insulting topics. It’s not as if the media has never been blamed before. And maybe the media is partially at fault for their exposes on cellulite. But it is also arguable that the media is a reflection of society; that the media is simply showing us what it is that we want to see. After all, the media would lack all power if we decided not to buy into what it is that we are being sold. Though it may be easier said than done, we have to figure it out soon, because we may be doing more damage than we realize.

While the adults in our society go about their normal routines, the effects of their behavior often unknowingly trickle down to our youth. Little girls are not only listening to what the magazines and television shows are saying about their idols, they are letting it affect their self-worth.

If you, like many, feel skeptical of the media’s harm to our kids’ self-image, take a good, hard look at these scary statistics. According to an article posted on September 11, 2013 on the The Daily Athenaeum, 50-70% of healthy 6-12 year old girls think that they are overweight, and 42% of first through third grade females want to lose weight. Even more alarming is the statistic that 81% of ten-year-old girls are afraid of gaining weight.

According to a 2005 Dove Global study, 92% of girls say that they wish they could change one thing about their physical appearance, with body weight ranking the highest. Not only do girls wish to change their appearance, they are avoiding certain activities including even going to school or giving an opinion, because they feel badly about their looks.

In the past, women have used their intelligence and creativity, innovation and strength to change the world. Florence Nightingale was instrumental in changing the nursing profession; Marie Curie helped to invent the first X-ray machine and won the Nobel peace prize – twice; Helen Keller campaigned for the blind and deaf; Rosa Park’s refusal to sit at the back of the bus led to some of the most important civil rights legislation of American history. Women are capable of achieving greatness, yet with a focus on the physical, our society is silencing tomorrow’s voices.

The question remains whether or not these ideals are what we wish for our daughters. It would be naïve to believe that this is something that we can change overnight; this alarming trend wasn’t something that came about instantaneously. But we can start with ourselves, and we can lead by example.

We can refuse to buy into the idea that our bodies define us. And we can love ourselves as we are. We can focus on the notion of health and intelligence, gratitude, and selflessness; Center our attention on our bodies of work and not simply our bodies. Skinny does not equal healthy, and beauty is subjective. We are hurting the greatest tool our society has to offer: our youth. And if we are going to have any chance of fixing it, we have to start by loving ourselves. After all, little eyes are watching.

The 2013 MTV Movie Awards Red Carpet

by Ryan Shea

The 2013 MTV Movie Awards were last night at the fashion never fails to intrigue me.  The MTV Movie Awards bring out all walks of the celebrity life.  From movie stars to musicians to your favorite reality stars.  There were a few great ensembles on the red carpet last night and, true to Movie Awards tradition, there were some outlandish fashion train wrecks!

Actress Crystal Reed looked classy and trendy in her coral and nude lace overlay dress.  The bottom was pumped up with a tulle and looked like a beautiful tutu.  And the nude pumps made her legs looking miles long!

Bridesmaids’ Melissa McCarthy rocked all black with gold accessories.  I think the was a great pick for Melissa the funny girl looks slim and glowing!

Model Karlie Kloss’ all white skirt and crop top was sexy!  The shoes were by far my favorite part of the outfit!  I am obsessed with ankle straps right now!  So chic.

My best dressed male goes to my secret crush … The legendary Taylor Hanson!  He is so handsome and well dressed.  This MMMbop boy surely grew into one handsome man.

And now for the worst of the worst … drum roll please !

Ke$ha…

What is this chick thinking?  I think she is so talented and beautiful and yet she insists on looking like a hobo.

You would never believe this girl had hit songs almost every other month.  Apparently hippies have gone goth, which is not a good look!  I don’t know what the worst part of this look is … the hat … no the fringe vest … nope definitely the pants … This outfit is just all wrong!

Ke$ha

This next one is really hard for me to do … I am absolutely head over heels with musician Macklemore.  I think his style and look are perfection, most of the time.  I love his swag and his ginger features!  But his outfit last night was really disappointing.  The royal blue did look cool but the cape was such a let down.  I would have rathered a big fur jacket and a onesie.

Don’t worry though I still love you!

There’s always one who has to be a statement maker, and expecting it to be Lady Gaga again, I was surprised to see a burnt cigarette butt hat on Pitch Perfect’s Hana Mae Lee.  Lee was one of my favorite characters in Pitch Perfect and her one liners were the most laughable moments in the movie.  My favorite line “I ate my twin in the womb.”  Befitting to her character’s, shall we say, uniqueness, Mae Lee rocks a interesting hat at the Movie Awards.

Hana Mae Lee

Last night’s MTV Movie Award fashion definitely had some note worthy looks.  But the overall trend for the awards had to be the pointy toe pump.  I have to say I was a little worried about this trend coming back but the new style of pointed toe pumps has a shorter point and is something I am actually excited to try out.

Kim Kardashian really was the first celebrity to rock this look when she stepped out in her neon green Loubitan’s.  Last night she showed off her baby bump in a sleek black dress and black satin pointed toe stiletto’s.

Kim Kardasian

Carrie actress Chloe Moretz kept it casual in a denim romper by Louis Vuitton and stunning t-strap pointed toe pumps.  The shoes were the focal point in this outfit, beautiful!

Kim K in training younger sister Kylie Jenner looked fabulous in her nude pencil skirt and white crop top.  The nude pointed toe heels were to die for!  I am absolutely passionate about these pumps.  I must go buy a pair now!!

Kylie Jenner

I have to say, I am totally into trying out this re imagined trend.  The only issue I have is after I take my shoes off at the end of the night they usually get thrown in a pile of my collection of shoes and then they get all smushed.  After they are flattened enough you can never get your toe in right and if someone steps on it, forget it, a little heel dent can ruin a pair of pointed toe heels.  Luckily in my never ending online shopping habit, I found the answer!  http://www.tiptopshoesaver.com/ sells all different tools to keep your hoes in new condition.  Their product, conveniently titled, The Tip Toe Shoe Saver, is a triangular piece that you insert into the toe area of a pointed toe shoe to keep the shape.  I ordered a pair and can’t wait to use them in my new heels.

So all in all, I think the fashion at the MTV Movie Awards last night was interesting, but slightly disappointing.  The one’s that got it right last night definitely brought in the Spring 2013 trends.  White was big and nudes, as well.  For accessories, I was happy to see the ankle stap and pointed toe heels were back and modern.

*Just on a side-note, I’d like to send my prayers out to the families involved in the tragic terrorist bombing at the 2013 Boston Marathon today.  This is a sad and frightening event and if there is anyway I can help I will and hope my fellow Americans will do the same.

Chatty Talk with Elise

by Elise Pentz

Kim K and Khloe K

Well, well, well …Drake is no longer wiping his tears from his poor attempt to win over Rihanna … because he has a new lady love. None other than the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’s Tatyana Ali! They were just spotted getting cozy at the Supperclub, in LA a few short days ago! The only reason you should take this somewhat serious is because it was Drake’s birthday celebration… Could Tatyana be the new birthday cake?Additional Pic
Chris Culliver may be heading to the Super Bowl but he’s not winning any points for his homophobic remarks! So he apologized, SO WHAT! Actions speak louder than words buddy, stop with the hate & try some love. Kids look up to you, clown!Additional Pic

Brandi Glanville is at it again! When will this girl realize, nobodyyyy cares about her or her sad excuse for a life.  Well, I guess we are talking about it so we just like talking smack on her. To get back at her sexxxy (ex) hubby Eddie Cibrian,  she had a $12,000 vajayjay rejuvenation & charged it to his card!  Surprise! Well, well, well.. Looks like someone is looking to get skanky, I mean sexy, with some guys soon.

Kim K. We get it. You are pregnant. To Kanye. We don’t care anymore. Congratulations.  Go away.Additional Pic
Lindsay Lohan – So, we all know she’s in court for killing someone, or something… with a car.. while drinking. But what some don’t realize is that she’s become so trashy apparently hotels won’t even allow her to stay there. She was refused from Santa Monica’s Shutters AND the Loews Hotel but can you blame them? Would you want that sleeping in your hotel & giving you a bad name? I think NOT! Especially when your party animal troll of a mom is always around. Baggage City!Album Cover
