My Favorite New York City Photos: A Retrospective Part 1

by Mark Giarrusso

To NY, Love Mallory

Being asked to choose your favorite photos is not hard, it’s impossible. I have never published a photo either in this space or on my Instagram account that I don’t love. If I didn’t love it, I wouldn’t post it. Simple. However, I can choose pieces that effect me for one reason or the other and while I very rarely have spoken publicly on what those emotions are, it might be worth examining some of these pieces now. From My Archives- A Beatiful, Snowy Photoshoot

by Mark Giarrusso

Midtown Crossing

On occasion, I will go through some of my catalog of work and look back on certain periods of my work. Since we are in the last depressing months of this New York City winter I decide to pull out some photos I took a few years ago during a frigid, snowy photo walk. I remember this walk well since about half way through the telescopic focus on my lens broke.

I was trying to capture how New York life still goes on despite a horrible storm. Until my lens broke… I still was able to capture some photos but all in all, you might consider this an outtake collection.

Nostalgia in Brooklyn- DUMBO Photography

by Mark Giarrusso

Under the Manhattan Bridge

Any native New Yorker will tell you that there is a certain nostalgia that permeates through Brooklyn. Yes, we may reluctantly admit that hipsters have brought a certain “cool” back to BK however, for a lot of us that were raised in NY the essence of Brooklyn goes beyond a bad mustache, know it all attitude and skinny jeans. It’s where out fathers and grandmothers grew up and where our great-grandparents settled after coming through Ellis Island. Next time you take a walk through an area like DUMBO try to imagine it through the hardworking New Yorkers from all over the world that came to Brooklyn and are the original producers of BK slickness.

New York City Photography: Pershing Square

by Mark Giarrusso

In the heart of New York City, there is a tiny section named Pershing Square. However, in all of Manhattan, there is more asked of this little square than of any other neighborhood. Located directly outside Grand Central Station it serves as a gateway to all who exit the old, Art Deco designed train station. Emerging from it’s doors is like a trip back in time and a welcome to the modernity of the city all in a first glance.

New York Photography- Rockefeller Center

by Mark Giarrusso

Rockefeller Plaza Noir

In the heart of New York City lies Rockefeller Center. The architecture is second to none. The art deco designs are perfect and when photographed in black and white they give off a perfect noir feel. The beauty of the gardens in the plaza and the views from the top of 30 Rockefeller Center are incomparable. When built in 1930, the 22 acres it covers were dedicated to beautiful murals, sculptures, and architecture from the most (and infamous) artists and artisans of the day. Today it stands as one of the most visited places in the world.
