Nail Polish Prevention: How Society Chooses to Address Sexual Assault

by Jessica Klein

Manhattan Digest, Sexual Assault, Nail Color

Since Undercover Colors went public earlier this summer, many have reacted to the company’s effort to aid in sexual assault prevention, which involves nail polish that changes color in the presence of “date rape drugs” slipped into someone’s drink, the idea being that a woman dips her finger into her drink to give it a stir and subtly procure information about the drink’s possibly insidious contents.

The North Carolina State University students who are developing the polish don’t actually suggest that it will solve the problem of date rape and other sexual assaults aided by drugs like Rohypnol, GHB, and benzodiazepines (those that the nail polish will detect). They plan to proffer it amongst a slew of “technologies” meant to “empower women to protect themselves from this heinous and quietly pervasive crime” known as sexual assault, according to the Undercover Colors Facebook page.

At first glance, this may seem (as it did to me, to be honest) like a cool, not to mention helpful, product. It’s empowering women by adding another tool to their self-defense kits! It’s subtle enough to prevent women from feeling burdened by it! It’s a health-positive fashion statement! Even women who are careful never to put down their drinks at bars or parties could consider this product helpful when it comes to the first or second dinner date, in which one might abandon her glass to go to the restroom without yet having gained full trust in her dinner companion.

After engaging in such reveries about the nail polish created to prevent sexual assault, it becomes easier to fasten on its many problems. First of all, it’s inherently gendered. Though I’m by no means saying that men do not and should not wear nail polish, the product is specifically aimed at women, sending the message that sexual assault happens only to women, or is only a women’s problem. It’s in part because of this attitude that sexual assault goes so frequently unreported amongst men.

Undercover Colors uses language like “empower” to suggest that it’s fighting the dynamic in which men traditionally have the upper hand over women. However, is the dynamic changing when it remains on women to have to work towards sexual assault prevention? In other words, it’s not a bad thing that, thanks to the polish, women have another tool to add to their anti-SA toolkits (sidled up to pepper spray in pink containers and purse-sized revolvers), but the product markedly keeps the responsibility of ending this kind of assault on the side of the potential victims.

As Undercover Colors puts it (again, in their Facebook mission statement), “Through this nail polish and similar technologies, we hope to make potential perpetrators afraid to spike a woman’s drink because there’s now a risk that they can get caught.” Is this really the best approach to stopping sexual violence, by scaring potentially violent aggressors into accountability (not to mention the, if small, possibility that they already can get caught—but no need to go into the legal system that’s overwhelmingly soft on these kinds of perps, police that have trouble taking these crimes seriously, and the stigma and shame associated with reporting them)?

Working on prevention that targets these possible perps would send a much stronger message than prevention tactics that tend to shift the burden onto women. For example, with the prevalence of sexual assault on college campuses, more of these institutions are implementing workshops and information sessions aimed at prevention. These hope to foster awareness and group discussion rather than encourage women to endure the possibility of sexual assault “discreetly,” in silence.

Also, by putting the responsibility on the side of the women the product aims to protect, it presents possible detrimental consequences for them. For one thing, bystanders who know that a woman is wearing her Undercover Colors may be less likely to interfere on her behalf if she’s in trouble. They might assume that this puts her in complete control of her ability to detect and avoid predators. However, alcohol alone often proves sufficient as a date rape drug, and it’s always worth looking out for your friends when out on the town. Let’s think even further forward, to the post-assault moment when ill-informed cops ask questions like, “Well, did you say no?/Is this what you were wearing?/Then what did you agree to leave the bar with him for?” Say technology like this nail polish becomes mainstream. Would police then ask survivors, “Why weren’t you wearing your nail polish?”

Of course, that’s looking at an extreme possibility, one that would come long down the line considering the Undercover Colors product is still in development. Regardless, it’s worth thinking about the implications behind any means of sexual assault prevention and asking what kind of overall dialogue it fits with, one in which sexual assault is a women’s problem, or one in which it’s a human problem. Naturally, we should aim for the latter.

Eataly- Your One Stop Shop For All Things Delicious

by Ryan Shea

Eataly, Manhattan Digest

As someone who has become an unfortunate jaded New Yorker in some aspects, I was delighted to discover for the first time the essence and variety that is Eataly.  Eataly is unlike anything I have seen before in New York, where they pair off the freshest variety in foods for you to bring home right next to mini restaurants that boasts the same type of food you are about to eat.  Sounds confusing right?  It isnt.  To me, when I went inside Eataly I felt like I was in a mixture of Fairway/Whole Foods type of a Supermarket (without the shallowness and annoying people in it) mixed with anything from great pizzeria to a delicious sweet shoppe and everything in between.  For a real foodie (hate it or love that word) it is sort of like you are walking into Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, although instead of it being just chocolate it is every type of yummy food imaginable.

Before me and my friend roamed around the location, we sat down to eat dinner at one of their seven restaurants called “La Pizza & La Pasta”.  We were excited to see what they were going to present us, as they were located right next to all the delicious take home pastas, sauces, and anything else Italian related out there.  Suggestions that I would make to my readers if they choose this restaurant upon entrance at Eataly are the Caprese as theirs is done with a bit of a twist, using heirloom tomatoes and a zesty and delicious champagne vinaigrette to go along with.  For “The Pizza” section, all of them look absolutely splendid however I would recommend trying the Salsiccciotta.  This is made with Tomato Sauce, Mozzarella, Eataly Housemade Sweet Italian Sausage, Mushrooms and Basil.  What is fantastic about this pizza is that each ingredient really shines when you take a bite, which can be unlikely with some pizzas because there can be one that outshadows the other.  For the Pasta section, you can’t get any better or more traditional than their Ravioli.  It is their housemade one that comes with Spring Pea, Ricotta, Pecorino, and mint with butter and peas.  For something that doesn’t have a meat option, the Eataly ravioli was far and by superb in taste and contrast in flavors.  Overall a 9/10 in my book.

Something me and my friend also discovered while we were there was the Nutella bar, nudged in a corner of Eataly.  As someone who is a bit of a Nutella “nut” per se I was completely excited to see what they had to offer.  You literally walk in to a room full of jars of Nutella (heavy breathing) and a simple yet cute bar with 8 different ways you can experience Nutella via Eataly.  You can have it in Brioche form (Croissant filled with Nutella), or you can try it in Tortina Margherita form (muffin spread with Nutella) if that spikes your fancy.  For me and my friend we simply beelined for the Crepe option, where I had mine filled with warm Nutella and Banana slices.  Unreal taste- warm, hazelnutty, just crazy good.  A perfect way to finish off a great meal at both of these locations.

Eataly boasts a ton of fresh food on top of the great restaurants they provide as well.  While you are there you can shop for anything from top of the line fish and meat items, fresh pasta, coffees, sweets, decor and even take a cooking class or two.  They are pretty much your one stop shop for all things delicious.  I would definitely recommend anyone going, bringing a big group of friends and seeing what all the great hype is about.  Worth the visit for sure.

Big Smoke Burger Review: Big Flavor, Big Taste

by Ryan Shea

Big Smoke Burger, Manhattan Digest

Seeing as I am a huge fan of a multitude of burgers I actually had no idea that there was a day devoted to them!  Yesterday was National Cheeseburger Day, and new hotspot Big Smoke Burger celebrated it big time yesterday by giving out 50 free cheeseburgers to the first 50 customers who stopped by their Chelsea location.  Sadly for me I was at work while the chow down session was going on, however I was lucky enough to stop by last night with two fellow hungry compadres to try out what makes this place so great! Big Smoke Burger in Chelsea has only been open for a mere two months, but seems to be doing pretty well based off of how busy the location actually was.  They have a great variety of options when it comes to their burgers as well as the pairing of of said burgers with fries, onion rings and their delicious Poutine.  What is Poutine you ask?  See below to get a better understanding of it.  The three burgers that we tried and would highly recommend is their Crazy Burger (Jalapeno Havarti, Coleslaw, Chipotle Mayo, BBQ sauce, Hot peppers & Lettuce), Lamb Burger (Fresh Ontario Lamb, Cilantro-Feta Spread, Lettuce & Tomato) and finally The Craft Burger (Sautéed Mushrooms, Rosemary Garlic Mayo, Lettuce & Tomato).  Sounds yummy right?  We definitely thought so for all.  Same goes with their delicious milkshakes and Boylan’s classic sodas that has pure cane sugar.  Super yummy.  While I was there I got to speak to manager John Flynn about the history behind Big Smoke Burger, what he thinks is the best burger there, what Poutine is and what he is hopeful for Big Smoke Burger’s future.  Take a look.

You guys have Poutine, something that isn’t that popular in the States. Can you explain to my readers what that is and why its so yummy? Get To Know The Sexy & Fascinating Seth Fornea

by Ryan Shea

Seth Fornea, Manhattan Digest

When your Twitter handle posts the following as a description of who you are- “Dancer, Chemist, Gardener, Gym Bunny”, you gotta think that this is someone who isn’t exactly a wallflower.  The person who fits this description is the one and only Seth Fornea.  Seth has become quite the popular guy in the gay community with his large followings on his social networking sites as well as becoming a big name in gay nightlife here in New York City.   I ran into him last weekend at Gay Days Six Flags when it was downpouring for the fifth time that day (not cute) and wanted to sit down with him and get to know him better.  Seth openly discusses with Manhattan Digest his big move from Louisiana, his take on why gingers are “fetishized”, his brief moment in the adult world and what his next steps are in the brand that he is building for himself.  Take a look.

Hey Seth!  Thanks for sitting down with us.  So first question is how did you get yourself into this crazy world you are in currently?

I was about 27 years old and decided to attend Southern Decadence in New Orleans.  It was my first big gay party/festival/circuit event.  I LOVED it!  The people were so much fun…it was so different to the stuffy bar scene I was accustomed to.   I wanted more.   So I started traveling to events, then decided to try my hand at Gogo dancing.  It was adventurous, it was a big contrast to my day job as a chemist.  I really like it as an outlet for my personality.  So I kept pursuing it.

You are originally from Louisiana but now live in NYC.  Being an out and proud gay man is there a large contrast with the gay community here compared to there?

Hmmmm….well the state of Louisiana is very different than NYC.  But if I were to compare NYC to say a city in Louisiana-New Orleans I could more easily compare and contrast.  Both NYC and Nola have a fun, vibrant gay scene.  NYC is definitely more trendy and fresh while Nola is more carnival and decadent.  NYC feels fast, competitive and edgy…while Nola seems a little more boy next door, relaxed, or as they say laissez les bons temps rouler (let the good times roll).  I like aspects of both cities but definitely see myself more in NYC.

What prompted the move to NYC?

My partner and I had been coming to NYC almost monthly before we decided to move here.  We really like the energy of the city, the subway/walking, the friends we have here, and most of all the opportunities that would present themselves by being NYC locals.

I always like to ask the people I’m interviewing what their favorite places to go in NYC are.  Any restaurant, club or hotspots you really enjoy going to?

I really like people watching at Washington Square Park.  I think the proximity to NYU and the village makes that a really cute place to have a picnic and enjoy the sites.  My favorite restaurant is Empanada Mama….so YUMMY!  As far as clubs….I honestly prefer the big mega parties that happen ever so often.  I don’t do the weekly clubs that much.  However I am working Spunk at the Manhattan Monster Thursday September 25th….so come out and see me!

There are a ton of men who do “gogo” dancing yet you seemed to have a made a huge name for yourself on social media whereas others just go with the flow and stay low key for the most part.  How have you been able to brand yourself so well?

A lot of fellas do gogo dancing for fun, or because they planned on being at the party anyway and wanted free tickets.  Those are valid reasons.  In those examples most of the guys have day jobs and are gogo dancing occasionally on the side for the fun and popularity.  So that’s one example of a dancer may you encounter.  Another is more of what I am.  I do Gogo dancing for the bulk of my income.  I don’t have a day job, most of my day is spent negotiating and planning future gigs.  So in my case, it’s very necessary to build up a name for oneself on all social media platforms possible.  Building that fan base was a slow organic process, from photo shoot to photo shoot, dancing gig to dancing gig, one party to another it built to what it is now. Honestly I have my fan and friends to thank for the success of it. Without their love and sharing my material I would not have the brand I do.

Is there a particular favorite or memorable moment you have had in your time as gogo dancing?  Maybe something with a fan or a particular event?

It would probably have to be the first time I worked at OZ New Orleans.  I had admired the dancers at OZ for much of my youth/college years (being from Louisiana).  So when I finally got to dance on that bar it was quite special for me.

You obviously are a ginger, or a redhead in other terms.  Gingers tend to be fetishized quite a bit in the gay community, especially as of late.  Do you take that as a pro or a con not only for you personally but for gingers everywhere?

It’s definitely a pro for marketing and negotiating-anytime there is something trending it’s a great business plan to ride the wave as long as possible.    However I would say its a con to be fetishized in ones personal life outside of work.  A lot of people meet me and the first thing they say is something overtly sexual about ginger pubic hair or how they like how I smell (apparently red heads have a very alluring sexual smell).   In most cases I haven’t even gotten their name yet, however their fetish is out in live and living color lol.  And if to be honest that does get a little awkward after a while.  Simply because what do you say back to that…..”ah I like your shirt?!”

Something that you got quite a bit of coverage on was a softcore video that you did for well known adult company Colt.  The video was actually so softcore it didn’t include quote unquote “the money shot”.  What made you do this type of video and why did you keep it at the length that you did?

The video was part of COLT’s Legendary Bodies series.  It was always meant to be soft core with no money shot.   The offer to do the video came with the same offer to have my own 12 month calendar.  I really wanted to do the calendar.  I enjoy photography and I knew COLT would hire talented people to make the calendar beautiful and something to be proud of.  In short I did the video because it was part of the calendar package.

You do post quite naughty photos on your social networking on top of the Colt movie that you did.  Thousands of fans are asking the question- are you going to do more in the adult world?

Honestly I am trying to get into acting and commercials     I would absolutely do a nude scene in a TV series, movie, or play.  I like nudity and think it can be a very important aspect of a story.  However I doubt very much I want to have sex on camera for the sake of sex.

What are your plans for 2014 and beyond?

I just finished a commercial acting class.  I am going on auditions as they come up.  I shot a few campaigns for some apparel lines.  I am dabbling in lots of things at the moment.   I will be still be dancing…fall is here and a lot of Key West trips are in the plans!

Ultimately for you personally and professionally what are you most hopeful for?

I am most hopeful for continued health and inspiration.  I like what I do, I like having my good health.  I am hopeful both of those continue!

Keep up to date with Seth on his social networking sites!

Theater Review: My Manana Comes

by Ryan Leeds

My_Manana_PosterFew of us, including those who have worked in service industries, seldom pause to reflect on the labor that has been put forth when we sit down to dine at our favorite restaurant. As My Manana Comes delicately points out, there are heartaches, back breaks, hopes and ambitions behind every entrée.

The setting for Elizabeth Irwin’s play is the kitchen area of a posh Upper East Side restaurant. Here, four bus boys discuss their every day lives, all of which differ significantly from the privileged lives of their patrons. Peter (Jason Bowen), is the alpha male who is satisfied with his daily routine. Meanwhile Whalid (Brian Quiijada) keeps an eye towards EMT certification and a plan to forsake the mundane existence which is his current reality. Pepe (Reza Salazar) and Jorge (Jose Joaquin Perez) join them as two illegal citizens desperate to fulfill promises and craft better lives for themselves.

Irwin’s dialogue is snappy and accurate and reveals truths that are simply ignored or disregarded by the well to do. Irwin also subtly weaves those truths into exchanges with the illegal immigrants, leaving the audience with a hearty meal of cultural philosophy. There is a moderate amount of dramatic climax, but this is undeniably a character piece.  Under Chay Yew’s swift direction, his well tuned cast turns the back room of this  dining establishment into a colorful yet pensive serving of theater that is both thoughtful and entertaining.  You’d better hurry though. They clear the tables and close the shop this coming Sunday, September 20th. My manana Comes

My Manana Comes plays now through Sept. 20th. at the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre at Playwrights Horizons.  416 W. 42nd St (between 9th and 10th)  For tickets, visit the box office, call  TicketCentral: 212-279-4200, or visit  http://www.ticketcentral.com .

Frites, Waffles & Beer- Why You Should Visit The Jolly Monk

by Ryan Shea

New York City has always been known for its trendy everything.  Trendy fashion, trendy clubs, trendy outfits for your pets (eww), but something you never really put together is trendy Belgian cuisine.  I discovered that is actually factual when me and a friend visited a brand new restaurant located in the heart of Hell’s Kitchen called The Jolly Monk.  Only being open for a month or so, The Jolly Monk is nestled right on 9th Avenue and 48th Street, an area that is growing in its popularity for its food selection, gay and straight bars, and overall town appeal.  So naturally I was excited to check out the new digs and see what this place had to offer.

When you walk into The Jolly Monk it feels like your atypical bar, but the brand new sense of it really kicks in with how spacious the actual location is set up matched with how beautiful the wood furnishings are throughout the place.  I will preface this with saying that I am not much of a drinker myself, which begs the question why did I review a place that is becoming known for its choice of Belgian beers?  Its simple- they had a yummy menu.  Duh.  As much as I am not a drinker, I do have to say that the selection that was presented to us was tasty in their own ways.  Some of the beers were easier to go down, especially paired with the food that we had (more of that to come later), and some had an actual sweet texture to them that really was enjoyable.  The Jolly Monk actually boasts quite a beer list that you can order from, including imported, American Brewed, Craft Bottles & Cans and other staples such as wine by the glass and cocktails to strike whatever your fancy is.

The food itself was quite delectable.  This is like an elevated bar experience in terms of you get a lot of quality out of the food that is presented to you and not just something that was hastefully put together.  Two appetizers that I would recommend getting are the mussels served in a delicious and warm sauce that really pair well together (see photo above) and their delicious frites which come with not one, not two, not three but 6 DIFFERENT SAUCES!  From Garlic Mayo to Sriracha Ketchup, each of them have a very unique flavor that compliments the frites very well.

When one thinks dessert and waffles, the other word that needs to be wedged in their is Belgian.  So naturally after having some delicious starters we were happy to make a beeline all the way to their dessert and try the epic deliciousness that is their waffle.  You can choose it in either classic Belgian style or Sweet Liege style.  As they said in one of my favorite 90’s shows, “Legends Of The Hidden Temple”- “The Choice Is Yours and Yours Alone”.  Corny but whatever.  The waffles come with the following, do your best to not salivate as you read- Belgian Chocolate Sauce, Vanilla Honey, Scoop of Gelato, Whipped Cream, Fresh Berries, and COOKIE BUTTER.  You heard that right folks, COOKIE FREAKING BUTTER.  I was enamored at the richness of the waffle paired with so many different toppings that it really was a great way to end the meal.

Bottom line, this is a good place to go to and hang with friends in a casual setting.  Right now The Jolly Monk is offering some great Happy Hour specials as well as their own Brunch menu should you choose to go at an earlier hour.  I would definitely recommend stopping by The Jolly Monk as it is a guaranteed good time to have with you and your friends.  Check out the official website for more info.

Theater Review: MIGHTY REAL: A FABULOUS SYLVESTER MUSICAL

by Ryan Leeds

Mighty Real: A Fabulous Sylvester Musical Theatre at St. ClementÕs Photo courtesy of Joan Marcus.
Mighty Real: A Fabulous Sylvester Musical
Theatre at St. ClementÕs

Unlike the rigid rules you’ll encounter at an amusement park, you won’t have to wait until the ride comes to a complete stop to spring from your seats at the Theatre at St. Clements. In fact, you may get a reprimand from a fabulous disco queen if you DON’T get up and shake your moneymakers. After all, a song called “Dance” isn’t meant to be enjoyed sitting down. Honeys, Sylvester just won’t have it!

Mighty Real: A Fabulous Sylvester Musical is the latest biographical jukebox show from a phenomenally talented Anthony Wayne . It spins the tale of a young, black, pentecostal gospel singer turned flamboyant, charismatic and unapologetic diva who found his treasure under the gleam of a disco ball. In addition to portraying Sylvester, Wayne penned the book and directed the show along with his real life partner and co-director Kendrell Bowman.

Wayne’s performance is appropriately caffeinated and exceedingly astonishing. His 90 minute embodiment is tireless and heartfelt. Adding to this musical can of red bull are his fellow singers, Anastacia McLeskey and Jacqueline B. Arnold, who play The Weather Girls. True fans may recall their 1982 smash hit, “It’s Raining Men” (which is included among the musical numbers), but prior to that hit, they toured with him as back-up singers.

Sylvester was deeply troubled and admitted to feelings of ongoing loneliness. Beneath the outlandish costumes, expensive jewels, and chauffeured limousines dwelled a troubled soul who yearned for greater substance. Ultimately, the nightlife of the disco decade lost a bedazzled jewel when this consumate performer lost his battle to AIDS in 1988. Wayne’s book doesn’t shy away from this darker side. The problem is that the narrative is too abrubt. He works so hard to raise the temperature of the night and the audience, only to quickly shift gears into a tale of woe, leaving the show’s pacing awkward and flat. We’re forced to trudge through a somber diatribe of loss and regret  before these talented performers once again manufacture enough energy  to knock the disco ball out of the decade with a rousing upbeat number. While there are valuable lessons to be learned from this incredible star, the true point of attending should be to seek unadulterated fun. And you will find it.Stay seated at your own peril.

MIGHTY REAL: A FABULOUS SYLVESTER MUSICAL now playing  at Theatre at St. Clement’s (423 W. 46th Street between 9th and 10th)  through Sunday, October 5th. Tickets are available at  (866) 811-4111 or by visiting www.FabulousSylvester.com

Brazilia Cafe- Coffee, Dinner, Dessert and More!

by Ryan Shea

Brazilia Cafe, Manhattan Digest

Fresh, clean, delicious and innovative are just four words to describe the exciting new eatery Brazilia Cafe, located in the heart of Noho at 684 Broadway.  Only being opened for less than two months, this cafe boasts more than your usual Starbucksy types and goes well and beyond the typical Tall/Grande Frappacino that you can get at any type of conglomerate locations that seem to be overpopulating a city known for its unique locations and mom and pop stores.

Brazilia Cafe, Manhattan Digest
Credit to: Brazilia Cafe

On the website itself, Brazilia Cafe describes itself as the following-  the culmination of a handcrafted experience from multi-facets of coffee, juice, foods and desserts.   The multi facets that myself and my friends noticed when we visited last week was that it can be used for many different options.  Just finished your workout and need to refuel with their delicious smoothies, freshly squeezed juices or heart healthy acai bowls?  They got you covered.  On your way to work and need a caffeine pickup from the brazilian coffee beans that Brazilia Cafe actually imports from their own Brazilian plantation?  Sure thing.  Want to bring you and your friends in for a delicious dinner full of yummy sandwiches, tapas, salads and more?  Go for it.  Brazilia Cafe boosts all of that and so much more, with a beautiful and spacious ambiance to go along with it.

Whereas I am not much of a coffee drinker myself, I did notice how popular the coffee bar was there and the fuming smell of the variety of coffee blends that they make at Brazilia Cafe.  Just take a look at their main page for inspiration.  If you are a decaf house drip or even want to warm up with their spice chai or hot chocolate I would recommend going here for all of that.  As for the food, I would recommend the following off of their inspirational and different menu.  For the Acai bowls I would recommend the Peanut Butter Bowl- açai, strawberry, banana, apple cider, top with peanut butter, banana, & homemade granola.  Something that is amazing in these bowls is that there is no dairy in any of them, and is healthier than the usual yogurt and granola options you can find out there.  This one I liked the most as it blended some of my favorite flavors such as strawberry, cider and peanut butter all into one delicious bowl.  If you want something that will wake you up and keep you focused, I would recommend this bowl highly.

As for the sandwiches, ones that me and my friends liked the most was the Grilled Jamon Y Queso- ham, gruyere cheese, pineapple, mustard relish hot-pressed on country white bread. Not overpowering in terms of size but hit the spot in terms of taste and flavor, especially the pineapple.  I would also recommend in the tapas section the Guava Braised Pulled Pork that comes with mango salsa and corn bread.  A great combo in my opinion.  Also their variety of flatbreads such as Margherita (vine-ripe tomato, fresh basil, mozzarella, roasted garlic, pesto) and Iberian (chorizo, shrimp, hummus) as they each have great taste and are not too filling upon completion.

So why not stop by this amazing place and see what it is all about?  Check out the main site for more information and if you are ever in the NOHO area stop by The Brazilia Cafe.  You won’t be disappointed.

Get To Know Sexy Comedy Duo Dick & Duane

by Ryan Shea

dick & duane, manhattan digest

In today’s entertainment world where so many things are being poorly recreated and legends that could never be replaced (Joan Rivers, Robin Williams) have left us, it is hard to find anything humor wise that is original and done in a way that really makes you think beyond giggle a few.  That is where Dick & Duane come in.  A couple of years ago I was on my Twitter account (@musicblogger61.  Follow or you are dead to me) and someone I followed retweeted something from Dick & Duane.  I checked out their account and found a lot of what they said to be incredibly funny, unique and witty all at the same time.   I then discovered their Facebook page and the hilarity continued to ensue, as well as the 8 inches in my pants from the photos they posted (That’s right folks! 8 inches.  Leave me your phone numbers).  The way they blended so many different forms of comedy really was quite fascinating and I knew I had to learn more about them.

A couple of days ago I sat down with Dick & Duane, who’s real names are Richie Cohen and Duane Tragis, to discuss so many facets of their lives from their 30 plus year relationship, who inspired them, their take on the top gay comics in the world right now and what they think about the very NSFW videos that they make, tee hee.  Take a look!

Hey Dick & Duane!  Thanks for taking time to sit with me!  So this first question is super important- when it comes to Mexican Cuisine, are you more Chipotle or Moe’s?

Richie: Hmm, you assume we like Mexican food! We do, but I actually think I prefer Mexican dick even more. However, you hit upon a topic that is important to us: the newfound prevalence of national mall chains in a city that had, until the Bloomberg years, managed to keep them out. NYC was always known for having some of the greatest food at mom and pop restaurants that had uniqueness and charm as some of their main ingredients. But due to hyper-gentrification and greedy landlords, many, if not most, of our beloved mom and pops have been forced out. The only businesses who can afford these insane new rents are corporate franchises. And we really hate them. So, our answer is: neither! But Duane, what are some of our favorite Mexican places that are still here?

Duane: There are some good taquerias left, like El Rancho Burrito on 45th St. It looks like a dump but the food is really good and fresh and cheap. We also like Taqueria Diana on 2nd Ave and Tres Carnes on 6th Ave. The staff are always so friendly and know our orders without us having to say a word.

Both of you have been together for quite some time!  Tell me how both of you met.

Richie: We were 18 and 19-year-old virgins when we met at Rutgers. We were each other’s first boyfriend. It was love at first sight for me, but Duane took a little convincing. We moved in together, exchanged rings from a gum ball machine a few months later and declared ourselves married.

Duane: But I think we’re tired of telling that sappy story. Can’t we change it to something juicier? Say that we met at Paddles (S&M sex club) a few months ago when I was fucking him in a sling.

Richie: Oh, I like that better. And when you shot your load, that’s when we declared ourselves joined as one. It’s still kind of sweet and sentimental.

In a world where gay relationships last shorter than my orgasm at the Eagle on Saturday nights, can you tell me what the secret is for your longevity?

Richie: I think it’s a combination of silly humor, deep friendship, trust, brutal honesty, biting sarcasm, true love, and hate of little things that annoy us. I always give Duane a DZS, which stands for Dorothy Zbornak Stare, a phrase I coined, which made it into urban dictionary (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=DZS). It’s really a look of love. Plus, we’re still very much attracted to each other, even after 33 years. The sex is still good. Especially when we get a hung Latino or black top to join in.

Duane: I have to disagree with you on gay relationships, Ryan. I think relationships are lasting longer these days and more men are coupled and tripled. But I’ll take that back if you’re one of those guys whose orgasm just keeps coming and coming and, well…that I’ve got to see.

You call yourselves the “Porn Comedy Duo”. Explain the meaning behind that.

Richie: We actually call ourselves a husband & husband comedy team, but some of the videos we’ve made, which have found a home on Vimeo (http://www.vimeo.com/funwithdickandduane), are what we call porn comedy or comedy porn. They’re funny, but sexy. You know, we’ve gotten great feedback from guys who said that they’d never actually seen hot porn that was genuinely, intentionally funny, or comedy that they could jerk off to. We really love hearing that. It’s exactly what we were going for.

Duane: As far as why we make videos like that, well, it’s as simple as this: we find sex funny.

Is your comedy very character based, visually driven, or something else?  What really drives the humor that has attracted thousands of gay and straight people to your act?

Duane: Yeah, definitely character based. But I think we also have 33 years of developing good comedic timing on our side. Take a good classic sitcom like I Love Lucy in its final seasons where the actors know each other so well that the timing of everything they do is organically natural and perfect. I feel like we have that kind of chemistry and timing. How’s that for a comparison?

You have many salacious videos that you guys post on your page that get very tongue in cheek (legit sometimes).  They are so crafty and innovative, how do you come up with the ideas for each?

Richie: Thank you, Ryan. Well, we get ideas, whether it’s for live standup comedy routines or for videos, sort of spontaneously. It’s been that way from the start. Except for when we’re arguing, or maybe even then, most of what we say to each other throughout the day is funny. I wouldn’t say that we’re always “on,” because that can be obnoxious, but we do see humor in everything and we do imitations or characters or funny dialogue all the time. From that, we will pull something to expand and share with the public. For example, our signature skit, which we’ve since retired, is acting out the lyrics to Laura Branigan’s songs “Gloria.” (http://youtu.be/sUj7Nfy_ZRA) That sketch was the result of us spontaneously acting out those lyrics while making out in Duane’s car in the summer of 1982, when that song was constantly on the radio. Years later, we expanded it by adding other 80s song references and another campy Branigan song, “Self Control.”

We have a new character, Little Blond Fag, which we do on Vine (https://vine.co/apemonkey). That one resulted from my saying, “I love getting blown by a little blond fag” after Duane had just done that to me. We thought it was funny, so we’ve done a series of 6-second Vines where Duane makes me call him “Little Blond Fag” over and over while he plays with himself. For our two short films where we satirize the Old Reliable gay porn from the 70s (http://vimeo.com/77398314 andhttp://vimeo.com/83544053) — and we have a new one in the works to complete the trilogy — it was completely spontaneous and improvised, including my trademark giggle at the end when I realize it’s obvious that Duane is faking his orgasm. The video which has resulted in Duane’s catchphrase “Knowledge and Smarts” (http://vimeo.com/76327901) was completely improvised by Duane. I had no idea where he was going with it but I grabbed the phone and started filming because I knew it was good. Our popular live sketch where I teach Duane how to do standup comedy (http://youtu.be/p6Q-SUx1cOQ) came about because we got fed up with having to share the stage with bad standup comics who all seemed to have taken the same class. And our comedy porn short film The Low Hole (http://vimeo.com/84632411) came about because no top can ever find my…low hole. When I’m bottoming, I spend most of the time saying, “Lower! Lower! LOWER!” so we decided it would make a funny video.

What story going on in the media right now is an easy target for Dick & Duane to make fun of?

Richie: We don’t usually target current media stories for our comedy. Our stuff is more timeless, or does that sound pretentious? Or does that mean our material is dated? Uh oh.

Duane: But, you know, we recently appeared on Comedy Nation with John Fugelsang, which is a political show, and the topic was Obama: The Good, the Bad and the Funny. We did the “Bad” and criticized his performance in his first 6 years, everything from attacks on press freedom and whistleblowers to targeted drone strikes and kill lists.

In today’s culture a lot of gay comedians feel like they need to go to extremes in order to get mainstream audiences to like them (See: Ross Matthews).  Or we rely on females to do all the gay jokes for us (See: Kathy Griffin).  What is your take on that, and has your approach been the same for years when it comes to your type of humor?

Richie: We’re not familiar with Matthews because we don’t watch current TV, and we think Griffin is a hack who exploits “her gays.” As far as Dick and Duane, we have always done what we think is funny, and a lot of it just happens to be gay because that’s who we are. But we don’t do anything stereotypical or homophobic, which many gay comics tend to do, whether it’s intentional or not.

Duane: I’m not sure what you mean by gay comedians going to extremes, but I think quite a few gay comedians will rely on played-out stereotypes, like the effeminate male, for the laugh.

Richie: When we were doing the TV show Up All Night in the 90s, we were once asked to play a couple of effeminate gay guys who want to get makeovers. The “punchline” was the fact that we were gay. We insisted on rewriting it as two masculine gay soldiers who are forced to get makeovers when they lose at arm wrestling with Rhonda Shear (http://youtu.be/8SHsXMmUPDU). We were just starting out, but it was very important that we stick to our principles and never sell out.

Growing up for both of you who inspired you in the comedy circuit?

Richie: Growing up, for both of us, it was classic sitcoms. And it still is, because every day, we watch our favorite episodes over and over, and never get tired of it. It’s like taking a master class in comedy, and they’ve been a huge influence on our writing and timing. The ones we watch most often and quote from are I Love Lucy, Mary Tyler Moore, and Mary Hartman. Oh, and The Comeback.

Duane: Carol Burnett, Phyllis Diller, Abbott and Costello, Smothers Brothers, Lucille Ball, Marx Brothers, Jack Benny, Sonny and Cher, Andy Kaufman. I could go on and on. Some of these comedians were before our time but we had the advantage of quality reruns on television when we were growing up so we got exposed to a lot of good entertainment. In the 80’s, standup comedy was all over cable TV and there were lots of smart comedians with great acts.  In my opinion, much better than what we see now.

What advice can you give to up and coming comedians on how to develop yourself socially and in the real world as well?

Richie: Be yourself. Don’t bullshit. Don’t try to be funny. Don’t steal from other comics. Get your face out of your smartphone and interact with people.

Duane: My advice would be to do your own thing. But those coming up were raised with social media technology, which is all about shared experiences. That, in turn, makes people want to do the same thing that everyone else is doing to feel like they fit in. If you look at, say, Vine comedy, everyone is doing the same “comedy thing” over and over again. Someone had to think of it first, though, so in that case, my advice is to be the creator, not the follower.

What is next for the D&D brand?

Richie: Our web series, which is tentatively titled I Love the Ape. Watch our Facebook page for updates…

Duane: We’re also debuting our first fragrance, which will smell like a combination of our post-gym armpits, post-fuck holes and dicks, and cheeseburgers.

Anything else you want to add to this interview?

Richie: People often ask us why we call each other Ape and Monkey. My father nicknamed me “Monkey” when I was 2 years old because he said I looked like one. I gave Duane the name “Ape” about ten years ago, when he started to become very hairy all over. Plus, his arms are long like an ape, and he kind of thinks like an ape, too. Yeah, he’s definitely a simian.
