Why you should Try Chalk Point Kitchen on Broome Street

by Ryan Shea

Chalk Point Kitchen, Ryan Shea, Manhattan Digest

In the three years of running Manhattan Digest, I have had the utmost pleasure and great ability to review some of the best restaurants in and out of Manhattan.  As I am always looking to expand my repertoire when it comes to the next best thing, I stumbled upon the largest travel site in the world, TripAdvisor, to see what their users thought topped the charts of the best restaurants in New York City. Comfortably sitting in their top twenty five out of 16,000 restaurants is Chalk Point Kitchen, which is located on Broome Street right off of Canal.  After reading tons of amazing reviews such as “Fresh, innovative and delectable in every way” and “Farm to table delicious”, I knew I had to go in and see what all the fuss was about.  So Monday night I grabbed my friend Neil and we took the 1 train down to Canal to the other CPK.  We were beyond thrilled with the experience.

Chalk Point Kitchen thrives itself on healthy, farm to table (or market to table) food for you to devour in a quaint, 70 seat space.  Owned by restauranteur Matt Levine and his IndieFORK team, with Michelin-starred chef Joe Isidori in the kitchen, the name Chalk Point comes from the following, per the site–  “When the Dutch arrived in Manhattan, the island was surrounded by great oyster beds that fed the Lenape Indians and delighted the oyster-loving Dutch. The islands we know as Ellis and Liberty were Little Oyster Island and Great Oyster Island to the Dutch, who might have been sitting on half the world’s supply. For the next two centuries, the oyster and New York would be inseparable. The Collect Pond (or Fresh Water Pond) was a body of fresh water near the southern end of Manhattan Island in New York City, occupying approximately 48 acres and as deep as 60 feet. For the first two hundred years of European settlement of Manhattan, Collect Pond was the main water supply for the growing New York City. The pond, fed by an underground spring, was located in a valley, with Bayard Mount (at 110 feet, the tallest hill in lower Manhattan) to the northeast and Kalck Hoek (Dutch for Chalk Point, named for the numerous oyster shell middens left by the Native American inhabitants) to the west-located in close proximity and steps away from 527 Broome Street, our present location. Naming our restaurant after the “Chalk Point” not only pays homage to the history of our location, but also gives insight into our style of food, which couples sustainability and high-level composition with approachability.”

With that being said, these are the dishes that I highly recommend that you try when going in.  First off, their Bar Harbor Mussels with Joe’s kimchi and house smoked bacon.  The broth alone in the mussels is to die for and is even more delicious when you dip the bread they supply you with in it itself.  The mussels have a great flavor to it, which is enhanced by the kimchi and bacon.  A big part of their menu is the “Vegetables To Share” which highlights just how fresh and innovative Chalk Point Kitchen can really be.  I would recommend their Roasted Heirloom Carrots with feta, black truffle and lemon and their Butternut Squash (pictured above) are two amazing choices.  The Butternut Squash actually tastes like a unique version of a sweet potato, and the carrots have such a zing to them with the extra flavors drizzled on top that it makes for a wonderful start to a meal.

For the entree, I would recommend their Farm Raised Asian Catfish Misoyaki with Kernan Farms spicy long beans, crispy ginger & housemade citrus ponzu.  The catfish literally melts in your mouth and the long beans work as a great pair to compliment the fish itself. Finish off your meal with the Classic Butterscotch Pudding with vanilla ice cream & duck fat popcorn.  Yes, duck fat popcorn.  The blend of flavors in your mouth make a great end result to an amazing meal.

Easily a 10 out of 10 in my book, and I rarely say that for anything I review.  It really is such a unique and beautiful experience that I would recommend anyone going.  Check out their official site for more information.

Legendary Bear Event Furball Hits Up Space Ibiza Tomorrow Night

by Ryan Shea

Furball, Manhattan Digest

Summer is over, the cold weather is here and we need all that we can to stay warm and cuddly.  Why not go to one of the biggest bear events in the country where there will be enough furry cubs and bears to keep you warm throughout the night?  This event, of course, is called Furball, which will be taking place tomorrow night at Space Ibiza starting at 10PM.

Ryan Shea, Manhattan Digest

With so much going on this weekend, from Comic Con to Columbus Day parties ahoy, there is no better time then to settle into the spacious Space Ibiza with your fellow furry friends for some great music, sexy gogo boys (I’m one hehe) and debauchery all under one roof.  The party is broken down into two levels.  On the rooftop, you can unwind with some drinks while dancing to the beats of DJ’s Dave Hughes & Ryan Sky.  On the main level, come chill and tip the gogo boys while jamming to DJ’s W. Jeremy & Kenneth Rivera.  There will be amazing drink specials all night including Buckets of Beer, $6 domestic beer / $7 imported and $7 Boo Boo shots + special Furry Cocktail for $10.

Besides me, the three other hot gogo bears to keep your blood going are Zakh, Hamilton and Stephen.  21 and up to enter.  $15 advanced tickets still available, check out the main site for more information. If you can’t do in advance it is $20 at the door.  After spins in Chicago, Provincetown, Fire Island and New Orleans all summer – Furball finally returns home to NYC.  So 500 plus hot bears, music, dancing and so much more.  What more can you ask for?  Stop by Space Ibiza tomorrow night and come see what all the fuss is about.  Also come say hey to me!

Check out the brand new Haymaker Bar & Kitchen

by Ryan Shea

Manhattan Digest, Haymaker Bar & Kitchen

It’s always nice when there is something new in the neighborhood to spruce up the environment, especially when craft beer is involved.  Enter Haymaker Bar & Kitchen, which just opened its doors to the public two weeks ago on 29th Street between 7th and 8th.  The surrounding area can be a little seedy as a lot of the bars have the word “dive” in front of them with the “Post Sports Game MSG” people coming to them, however Haymaker is the exact opposite.

Manhattan Digest, Ryan Shea, Haymaker Bar & Kitchen
Credit to: Haymaker Bar & Kitchen

Haymaker Bar & Kitchen, which used to be a barbershop, has been renovated to be very spacious, roomy and chic all under one roof.  The dimmed lighting at night adds to a great atmosphere where you can have an intimate dinner for two or hang by the bar and have a nice get together with a bunch of friends.

Manhattan Digest, Ryan Shea, Haymaker Bar & Kitchen
Credit to: Haymaker Bar & Kitchen

Seeing as they are a craft bar they have an amazing line of drafts available at your disposal, as well as unique drink concoctions that are tasty and delicious.  In rotation in their draft line are items such as the Gigantic Saboteur, which is Roasted malt and slight bitterness with chocolate and coffee notes.  Chocolate and coffee not really what suits your needs?  Maybe the Grimm Super Symmetry would work for you.  What is in that? Coming from Brooklyn, is it Dry Hopped Gose with lemon zest, tart with hints of lemon, salt, grapefruit, and hoppy floral notes.  Refreshing with a great zing to it. My favorite on this list is the Prairie Bomb, coming from Tulsa, Oklahoma.  It is (13%) Imperial Stout, brewed with espresso beans, vanilla beans, chocolate, and Ancho Chile peppers.  A bomb of flavors in your mouth indeed.

Manhattan Digest, Ryan Shea, Haymaker Bar & Kitchen

Haymaker goes beyond what you would typically get for your standard bar food and elevates it to another level in terms of taste and value.  An amazing starter is the Baked Dry Chicken Rub Wings, with Haymaker Spice Blend, Lime, Sweet Chili and Crispy Garlic.  Doesn’t need to be smothered in sauce to be a good wing, and this is a prime example of that.  Cheese is always my good friend, so I would recommend going with the Pimento Cheese Spread, which comes with Cheddar, Pepper Jack, Cream Cheese Blend, and Crudité.  The variety of cheeses mixed with the crudite really go well together.  For their entrees, go with the Haymaker Burger (7 oz. Pat LaFrieda Beef, Caramelized Onion Jam, Vermont Farmhouse Cheddar on a Sesame Seed Bun) or the Braised Short Rib Sloppy Joe (Slow Braised Short Ribs on a Sesame Bun Made in the Classic Fashion).  With a side of fries, both options will fill you up and leave you satisfied.

Manhattan Digest, Ryan Shea, Haymaker Bar & Kitchen

Haymaker’s is a simple concept upon arrival with a slam dunk exit when you leave.  I highly recommend trying this place out next time you are headed to or leaving Penn Station and just want to relax with some good brews, food and friends.  Check out their official site for more information.

Manhattan Digest’s 2nd Fundraiser Another Big Success!

by Ryan Shea

Manhattan Digest

Manhattan Digest held its 2nd fundraiser this past Friday night at Gym Sportsbar down in Chelsea.  With the fear of Hurricane Joaquin (Phoenix) settling into New York that night, I was worried that a lot of people wouldn’t show up due to how bad the weather was going to be.  Regardless, a ton of friends, family and friendly customers stopped by to donate, have some delicious cupcakes and submit their tickets in hopes to win some fantastic prizes.

Manhattan Digest
Credit to: Ryan Shea

Overall we raised hundreds of dollars for cancer research with even more donations coming in over the next day or so.  That makes me extremely happy to know that doing something as simply as a fundraiser can hopefully save at least one life with the money that we raised.

I would love to thank everyone that showed up, as well as Serge Sterbois, Jerry Reilly and the Gym Sportsbar staff for their amazing job before, during and after the fundraiser.  I would also love to give a shoutout to Tim de Iturriaga at Adonis Lounge for finding a host for the event (the handsome and wonderful Jason) who went out of his way to talk to every person who came down into the basement area about the charity.  Finally, thank you to Huascar Aquino from H Bake Shop who generously donated a ton of cupcakes for everyone to devour and enjoy.  Got so many amazing reviews from the cupcakes so let’s hope it drives in some new customers for him!

Finally, a big thanks to all the companies that donated generously for this event.  This includes Krave & Kulture, Crunch Gym, Haru Sushi, Jacob’s Pickles, Best Barber in Hell’s Kitchen, The New York Beer Company, The Jolly Monk, Hotel Belleclaire, Otto’s Tacos, H Bake Shop, BKB Restaurant, Cantina Rooftop, Morton’s Grille and Bear Skn.  My gratitude is endless and I really appreciate what each of you did, so thank you again!

Will hopefully have another one in early 2016.  In the meantime, thanks to everyone again who participated and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Big Brother Winners- From Worst To Best

by Ryan Shea

Season 17 of Big Brother concluded last week with uber fan Steve Moses winning by a vote of 6-3 over Liz Nolan.  It is hard to believe that this show has been around for 15 years now since it premiered in the summer of 2000, and what’s even harder to believe is that it was widely considered to not be renewed after an insanely lackluster first season.  However, the show found a format that worked for its audience, and it has done a good job somewhat at maintaining that strategy since 2001 and keeping a loyal fan base throughout.

The show has had seventeen seasons, so of course it has had seventeen winners.  Many of the winners have played a “snake in the grass” strategy where other ones have been brazen and bold since walking into the house on day one.  Some have even done a good mixture of both.  Question is, who did the best, and who did the worst?  I am ranking the winners from worst to best, and you may be surprised to know who I think is the best in the end.  Keep in mind that I am taking what happened outside of the game (Adam Jasinski, ahem) and just focusing on the game itself.  Sound off on what you think fellow BB historians!

17. Lisa Donahue- Big Brother 3

Lisa was the antithesis to Will Kirby the summer before, and is part of the reason why she won the game overall as it was proven a nice person could win this thing.  Problem is that Lisa didn’t deserve a goddamn vote from anyone on that jury.  Yes she played a good game in terms of alignment and all of that, but when you are sitting next to arguably the best person to never win BB (Danielle Reyes) it is hard as a fan to understand what made Lisa’s game even a fraction better than Danielle’s.  It was a hella bitter jury that was angry at Danielle due to her playing each and every one of them and that is why Lisa won.  So in my eyes, Lisa didn’t win anything because of what she did, she won because of what Danielle did.

16. Hayden Moss- Big Brother 12

Hayden, just like Lisa, was a very likable player (even more so when he played Survivor).  I just find that his win to be somewhat of a foregone conclusion as he really didn’t have a strategy at all besides aligning with three other dudes that dominated.  I like my winners to have individual strategy, which neither him or runner up Lane seemed to possess.  That is why he ranks low on my list.

15. Adam Jasinski- Big Brother 9

I hated this season for so many reasons (read here), but Adam just kept finding himself in the right place at the right time and really didn’t have any clout as to why he won in the end.  Now he’s not winning in life at all.

14. Jordan Lloyd- Big Brother 11

YJordan’s strategy was to be nice and sweet.  That’s it.  It was hilarious watching her answer the jury questions which really was just talking in circles to where i couldn’t even figure out what she was saying.  I hated Natalie but at least she had a cohesive strategy to get to the end.  It was a bit Lisa/Danielle again with these two and that’s why Jordan won.

13. Steve Moses- Big Brother 17

I gotta give credit to Steve as making it past 16 other players is incredible in the first place.  He just made so many bad moves to get to the end that it’s hard to figure out how he really made it there.  During the live double eviction, he put up Meg and Jackie, which made virtually no sense.  Him and Johnny had ample opportunities to get rid of Austwins and Austin, and they just kept them in the game.  I just feel if you are a BB historian and things are that blatantly obvious, you should go after a visible alliance and get rid of them.  That simple.  Kudos however for getting rid of Vanessa in the end.

12. Eddie McGee- Big Brother 1

Yes this season was forgettable and was such a different format compared to what it is now.  Eddie did a great job though of getting the American public to like him and that is why he won in the end.  Also, with a group of people in the end who were just nice and plain people, Eddie had a fire and bold personality that at least made it semi interesting to watch.

Andy Herren - Big Brother 15

11. Andy Herren- Big Brother 15

This season was filled with scummy people.  Andy wasn’t one of them, thank god.  Andy’s likability helped him win in the end, like Lisa and Jordan, and he won due to his great ability of floating.  His best move in the game was creating The Exterminators and convincing McCrae that Elissa voted out Amanda during the double eviction when it was really him.  He ranks low on my list though as I for one have never been the biggest fan of blatant floaters winning this game.

Drew Daniel, one of the houseguests on BIG BROTHER 5. Photo: Tony Esparza/CBS ©2004 CBS BROADCASTING INC. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

10. Drew Daniel- Big Brother 5

Drew did a great job at winning competitions and screwing over his girlfriend in the end.  He barely beat Michael though, something that he would’ve had the same problem doing with Diane.  Had it been him and Nakomis in the end, he wouldn’t have had a snowflakes chance in hell of winning.  That is why he ranks low on this list as he didn’t really have that much of a cohesive strategy to win this thing with a majority.

Rachel Reilly, Manhattan Digest, Big Brother

9. Rachel Reilly- Big Brother 13

I will say that I loved Rachel in her original season, and had her and Brendan not made themselves such outsiders and tried to form an alliance with the rest of the house to take The Brigade out, she would’ve had a very good shot at winning BB12.  However I really think Rachel won BB13 because she proved that she could be a great gamer without her boyfriend there, and was a much better strategist than Porsche to win in the end.

Credit to: Wikia
Credit to: Wikia

8. Mike “Boogie” Malin- Big Brother 7 All Stars

Mike was the second to last choice to be in the BB7 house and I think he was planted there to resurrect the Chilltown alliance which he did a very good job in doing so.  Many people see Will as doing the majority of the work however Mike did an amazing job at playing literally everyone in that jury (more than anyone Erika) and won the game in doing so.

Credit to: Wikia
Credit to: Wikia

7. Maggie Ausburn- Big Brother 6

Everyone hated Maggie and her alliance.  I personally couldn’t stand the 4 others in that alliance but the one person I thought was playing a great game was Maggie.  Maggie simply won because it took her 15 minutes to convince Howie to nominate James and Sarah which for the most part kept The Friendship alliance having power until the end of the game.  She easily manipulated April and Ivette in the end to have them fight with each other and she just sat back and watch it implode.  And she developed great bonds with people like Ivette so when it came time to decide who to take to the end, Ivette chose her over Janelle (which was an insanely stupid decision).  That is why Maggie ranks so high on my list as she really was an insanely smart strategist.

6. Dick Donato- Big Brother 8

Big Brother 8 was hard to watch sometime due to the antics of Dick, however I watched that season over recently and kind of understand what he was trying to do.  You are literally in a hamster wheel for three months and he was doing whatever it took to get into the minds of these people and mess with them to where their insecurities was ever present and thus so became weaker and weaker in the game.  He also did great in competitions and aligned with his daughter the whole game to get himself to the end and win.

Jun Song, Big Brother, Manhattan Digest
Credit to: Gold Derby

5. Jun Song- Big Brother 4

Jun played an absolutely outstanding game in Big Brother 4. She masterfully manipulated her ex Je and then when the time came she got rid of him as he was a huge threat to win this game in the end.  Knowing this to be true, she aligned with the most hated person in the house (Alison) and watch Allie take person after person out including Robert in the end.  Alison had so much blood on her hands, that Jun was clearly viewed as the lesser of two evils and won the game (rightfully so).  Using something as simple as cooking is incredible and played a big part of her winning as well.  I think Jun’s win is very underestimated and she played a much better game than anyone else in that house.

Ian Terry, Manhattan Digest, Big Brother
Credit to: Wikia

4. Ian Terry- Big Brother 14

I had a hunch that Ian had this game on lock from a very early stage.  He was really the only person to see how Dan was operating in the game, which is why he focused on aligning with him to the end where several jury members were bitter and angry towards the BB10 winner.  Now usually I can’t stand when the jury angrily votes for the lesser of two people to win a game (See: Lisa), however Ian really did play such an amazing strategic, mental and physical game that it made sense for him to win in the end.  He went from student to master in a matter of two months. That my friends, is amazing.

Derrick Levasseur, Manhattan Digest, Big Brother
Credit to: fansofrealitytv.com

3. Derrick LeVasseur- Big Brother 16

I wasn’t really a fan of BB16 as it was full of a bunch of people who really didn’t understand how to play the game.  Derrick however, was not one of those people.  Derrick brilliantly made it through to the end of the game by forming The Hitmen alliance that brutally took each and every person out of the game, and just like Maggie did to Ivette, he had Cody take out the last remaining player in Victoria which rode him to victory.  The fact that he made it that far in the game to final three and was never on the nomination block is a testament to how amazing he played the game.

Dan Gheesling, Manhattan Digest, Big Brother
Credit to: Wikia

2. Dan Gheesling- Big Brother 10

I find that every generation of Big Brother has its legendary winners.  The first was someone who I will be writing about shortly, the latter is Derrick and in the middle we have Dan Gheesling.  Dan could’ve easily been second out in BB10 after his alliance member Brian got the boot in week one.  However Dan took that downfall and completely reversed it for himself by allowing the rest of the houseguests to implode on each other and take each other out each week.  He aligned with Memphis all the way to the end where he won the game easily as people saw Dan’s game as superior over Memphis.  Job well done.

Manhattan Digest, Will Kirby, Big Brother
Credit to: Wikia

1. Will Kirby- Big Brother 2

The Michael Jordan of Big Brother.  Don’t need to write much here.  If you have watched since the beginning, you know why Will is viewed as the best player to ever play this game, and how he should be the only two time winner besides Dan for his amazing effort in BB All Stars.  Legend.

Manhattan Digest Fundraiser October 2nd at Gym Sportsbar

by Ryan Shea

After having an absolutely amazing first fundraiser back in March, we at Manhattan Digest have decided to do a second one in hopes that this will be even more successful than the first.  Manhattan Digest is throwing its 2nd annual fundraiser this coming Friday on October 2nd, taking place at my favorite gay bar in the world Gym Sportsbar from 7-9 PM.  Similar to last time, it will be held in the basement area of the bar, where you can come and donate money to support breast cancer research in my late mother Lisa’s memory and bid on some incredible prizes that you yourself can actually win!

We are echoing the same format we did back in March, in the form of a silent auction (raffle style) where you can take your raffle tickets and put them in the containers of the prizes that you want to win.  $5 gets you 2 tickets, $10 gets you 5 tickets and $20 gets you 10 tickets.  You are more than willing to donate more if you would like.  A very handsome gentleman from The Adonis Lounge will be at the door to give you your tickets so there is a bonus incentive there as well!

So what are the fabulous and amazing prizes that you are able to potentially win?  Take a look at what we have in store!

Head to Greenpoint and discover Toro Ironworks Kitchen & Bar

by Ryan Shea

Ryan Shea, Manhattan Digest, Toro Ironworks Kitchen & Bar

Sometimes its good to go outside your normal viewing point and see what else is out there for you to enjoy.  Whereas most of our foodie reviews happen to take place right in Manhattan, there are times where something looks very tempting and delicious outside of the main borough to shift our gears and see what they are all about.  In this situation, it is a new Mexican eatery called Toro Ironworks Kitchen & Bar, located right off the G train in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

Toro Ironworks has been open for less than a year now yet seems to has solidified itself as a culinary staple in Greenpoint.  Owned by former music executive Sebouh Yegparian, who has been a resident of the Greenpoint area for twenty years, his goal is to bring fresh ideas and unique spins on the traditional Mexican cuisine in both the food and drink areas.  He curated a craft beer selection highlighting brews from Mexico including labels like cult-favorite Day of the Dead and the Baja-brewed Ensenada.

Some popular appetizers that are good to start out with is their Elote (corn on the cob) with a really incredible spicy sauce smothered on top and their queso cheese dip with a side of nachos.  Traditional in a sense but if prepared correctly can really start your meal off well.  Something really unique that Toro Ironworks prepares is their “hummus a la Mexicano” combining a Mexican classic, salsa with an Israeli staple, hummus.

Toro Ironworks of course has an incredible line of burritos, tacos, enchiladas and quesadillas all based on what your taste buds want.  Something that really caught me eye with this location is that they go beyond the normal chicken, steak, and carnitas option and bring very unique takes on all three and more to your plate.  Some great options include Koreano Steak (Steak marinated with Korean BBQ sauce), Camaron (Grilled & Chilled Shrimp), and Al Pastor (Braised Beef) just to name a few.  I tried the Koreano Steak Burrito and was amazing with the flavor texture inside, especially with the Korean BBQ sauce and delicious picked onions wedged inside that added a great crunch to the burrito itself.  My friend opted for the Al Pastor Burrito with citrus and pineapple and had a similar reaction while noticing how fresh the burrito really was.  As someone who doesn’t drink alcohol too much, I really enjoyed that they had authentic Mexican soda there with real sugar cane as it blends really well with all the food that we ate.  Overall, this place is fantastic and worth the trip to see what all the fuss is about.

For more information you can logon to their website. Toro Ironworks Kitchen & Bar is located at 254 Griggs Street and their hours of operation are Monday – Thursday: 12pm – 10pm, Friday: 12pm – 11pm and Sunday: 12pm – 10pm.

Happy eating everyone!

Discover The Best Of Italy at Olio e Piu in the West Village

by Ryan Shea

Olio e Piu, Manhattan Digest, Ryan Shea

With the warm weather making its exit and the cold, brisk weather of the fall making its way in, Manhattanites are in search for some warm and hearty meals to keep themselves toasty and satisfied throughout the next couple of months.  Manhattan has its bevy of places to choose from when it comes to the best of the best in Italian food, however there is one place in the West Village worth stopping by if you are ever in the Christopher Street area- Olio e Piu, located at 3 Greenwich Avenue.

Credit to: Olio e Piu
Credit to: Olio e Piu

Olio e Piu is visually very appealing, with the color green being its true standout right on the outside of the restaurant, yet when you walk inside you feel like you are brushed off to Italy with the way how the establishment is actually setup.  Its warm and dark colors encompass the setting completely and it becomes even more beautiful if not romantic during the dinner hours when the lights are dimmed and the candles are lit.  It also happens to be very spacious which works for large groups of people or just a simple dinner for two.

The menu speaks for itself as it stands true with how delicious authentic Italian food can actually be.  The menu is multi-dimensional in terms of what you can order and is plentiful in each category.  You can start traditionally with their Antipasti and fresh Bruschette.  A dish that I definitely recommend starting with is the Polpette di Vitello Ripiene, otherwise known as Veal Meatballs.  The Meatballs are served with a delicious tomato sauce and are cooked to perfection.  Meatballs and sauce go together like Peanut Butter & Jelly, and this is a great example of a starter dish.  If you want to go with a classic I would recommend trying the Insalata Caprese, comprised of fresh tomatoes, burrata, basil oil and a balsamic glaze.  Something I really loved about this dish is that it is simple in its approach yet has such an incredible flavor texture.  I love the use of the different color of tomatoes (classic red and vibrant orange) that pair really well with the creaminess of the burrata.  Mix that with the oil and glaze and it is a tasty dish to start out your night.

For me and my friend, we had one thing on our mind- Polenta.  And Polenta is exactly what we got in two very different preparations in terms of what they were paired with.  First is the Maiale alla Diavola, which is Polenta resting under a perfectly cooked pork chop.  The other option would be Polenta alla Bolognese, which is exactly what it sounds like.  A Bolognese consisting of beef, veal and pork on top of their delicious Polenta.  Both had incredible taste textures and really brought it home when it came to authentic Italian cooking.

They also have an amazing assortments of fresh pizza and pasta dishes for you to devour.  After a hearty meal if you are still lingering for something sweet, your best bet would be to try the Lemon Ricotta Pana Cotta, with fresh Raspberry compote and chocolate shavings cannoli crumbs.  A delicious and satisfying way to end your meal.  This was a 9 out of 10 in my book, and is something definitely worth trying out next time you hop on the 1 towards Christopher Street.

Redman, Manhattan Digest, Ryan Shea

You really can’t get any bigger when it comes to legends in the came then you can with the one and only Redman.  Redman, who has been active in the hip-hop industry for 25 years now, is still going strong as ever and staying as relevant as ever.  Born right outside NYC in Newark, New Jersey, Redman has had his hands successfully in multiple different business ventures outside of his illustrious career in the hip-hop game. From television, movies, video games and more, Redman’s unique personality and consistent drive in doing what he loves show in everything he does.  He is a personal favorite of mine since I was a kid in the 90’s and continues to be many years later.

Now Redman has a brand new single he just released called “Dope Man” from his newest album called “Mudface”, due in stores on October 30th.  We at Manhattan Digest were blessed to interview Redman about his single and album, his longevity in the industry, current favorites, and why women’s feet are part of his upcoming plans.  For real.  Check it out.

The song “Dope Man’s” chorus goes- “Hey Mr. Dope Man you’re a star, I love your gold chains and your fancy car”.  Is Dope Man really you?  What drove the inspiration for this song?

Yes I’m referring DOPEMAN as me!  Meaning my lyrics and music is the DOPE people are fiending for… People are complaining about the same sounding music on the radio!! So it’s up to the DOPEMAN to supply the hood with the Goodness !!

You also have a new album coming out in October called “Mud Face”.  What can your fans expect from that album?

MudFace album is an album I put together for my fans and to keep relevancy, till MUDDY WATERS 2 album come out..!! I’m independent now, so I have to keep music out there to create other revenues of business !!

For new artists to create longevity path as I did… to be able to still drop music 23 years later and still be Hot???  Here are some steps.

  6. Have a good team that will keep you Brand Name Monumental..
  7. GO OVERSEAS AND PUT ON GREAT PERFORMANCES as WELL AS YOUR OWN COUNTRY !!
  8. Know your History on this Rap shit !!..It is a business !!
  9. MAKE good connections and know the right PEOPLE !!
  10. Make sure your Hood and City respects you for you and the work you doing and did to Rep your state !!

Do you have a favorite moment of your career that sticks out for you?

Why You Should Try Maple: The Latest In NYC Food Delivery

by Ryan Shea

Manhattan Digest, Maple, Ryan Shea

As Manhattanites, we all know how busy our schedules can be and we always seem to resort to the same food over and over again when it comes to online delivery services.  As great as these websites can be, it can get a bit overwhelming when it comes to navigating down to what you really want at a good price point.  Well I believe I have found the next best thing in NYC food delivery, and it is as simple as one word: Maple.  Maple, which was just launched in April of 2015, is the brainchild of founders Caleb Merkl, Akshay Navle and Will Gaybrick, who all have extensive and incredible backgrounds at companies from Quidsi, High Peak Venture Partners and Thrive Capital. You combine their development and financial skills and pair them with world renowned chefs Soa Davies (executive chef) and David Chang (Chief Culinary Officer) and you no doubt have a recipe for banging success in the near future.

Soa Davies, who comes from the worlds of working with Eric Ripert at the three Michelin starred Le Bernardin, as well as the author of two cookbooks, is the one who is leading the menu development and drives culinary vision for Maple.  David Chang on the other hand, who many people know as the visionary behind one of my favorite restaurants in NYC Momofuku, has also won five James Beard Foundation Awards and two Michelin stars.  He is heading the culinary board and is working very closely with Soa   And these two are bringing you top of the line ingredients, menu options and so much more each day for a price that is simply between $12-15.  Kind of hard to believe right?  Well believe it.  It exists, and its freaking fantastic.

I myself got to try Maple for the first time the other day for lunch and was beyond pleasantly surprised by the entire experience.  The online ordering process is quick and painless- you go to their main screen where they provide you with the multiple fresh and delicious items they have prepared for you that day.  It can be something on the greenery side like Roasted Beet & Avocado Salad or something a little heartier like their Vadouvan Curried Pork (pictured above).  I had their Roast Pork and Fig Sandwich with a green bean salad and it was simply divine.  I have never had figs on a sandwich before, but the combination of both with the aged Manchego on a Balthazar Onion roll really came together.  Its as if Thanksgiving had a super deluxe remix song and this was it and it was a hit.  A big hit.  If this is their simple concept of fresh ingredients prepared daily differently each day, then so far they are winning my vote and hopefully thousands other.

I sat down with the team at Maple to get to know more about the company and why ultimately you should choose them for your next meal in.

Give me a brief description of Maple’s concept and launch.

Maple is a food delivery concept being built from the ground up. We’re combining some of the country’s top culinary talent with some of the brightest minds in technology and logistics to make food delivery exceptional at every touch point. We launched in April 2015 and are working to provide balanced meals made with the highest quality ingredients, curated by the city’s best chefs, all at an accessible price and wrapped up in a consistent and reliable experience.

What inspired your unique concept?

Maple was born out of frustration over the problems that plague food delivery and out of the idea that a better solution exists.  We think that thoughtfulness around delivery – owning every step of the process and building a company with the singular focus of making the food delivery experience an exceptional one – can yield a service that is truly delightful instead of just tolerable.

Why is the time right for Maple?

The food industry is a big space with a diverse set of problems and customers. We’ve worked really hard to create a new answer to simple and consistent food delivery.  We feel strongly that it shouldn’t be hard to get a well-balanced meal made from high quality ingredients at an accessible price. People are cooking less, but expectations around quality and experience are only pushing higher. It’s the perfect time for Maple.
