The Generation of Change

by Alex David Jimenez

Roughly six years ago, when my now fiancé and I had just moved in together, the United States Presidential election of 2008 made history. Just under a year earlier, when we began dating, I recall him saying that he didn’t believe that Barack Obama stood a chance of winning the election. He told me, though he hoped otherwise, that he didn’t believe that we would see a black U.S. president in our lifetime.

Ten months later it came to pass.

In the same respect, another remark my partner made, amid our many deep conversations during candlelight dinners and Sunday mornings-in, was that he didn’t wholly believe that we would see an America with full recognition and legal marriage equality among gay and lesbian couples. I argued otherwise. At that point of exchange, one state legally allowed and acknowledged same-sex couple’s right to marry. DOMA was however still constitutional – the federal government could legally overlook many of those rights.

Today, six years later, nineteen states legally allow and acknowledge same-sex couple’s right to marry, and DOMA has been eradicated.

Same-sex marriage is easily one of the most controversial and bare-knuckled fights any group of any respective community has ever fought. In our lifetime, and stretching back into the history of American rights, the gay marriage campaign is quickly becoming as divisive and as landmark as those of the abolition of slavery and women’s rights. While many did concur with my partner in his vision of a limited America within the span of our lives, and while many still do believe as such, it can be said that the shift in favor of a tolerant America is certainly in occurrence – right before our very eyes.

Why?

Just over ten years ago there were no U.S. states that recognized marriage as anything but between a man and a woman. In the span of only one decade, that number has gone from zero to 19. In each state where gay marriage is still illegal, there are lawsuits pending to challenge the fundamental ethics of the bans enacted. In these past ten years, something has changed. Something came about in the broad scope of politics and the voice of the people. There are certainly many factors at play, and ultimately there is an avalanche of causes leading to the change in overall American attitude. Yet what I believe is simpler: one event largely began to create transformation. Just beyond the past decade, the millennials began to vote. The millennials began to join the workforce. And the millenials were far more unafraid to come out as openly gay and lesbian than those generations before them.

The statistics are simple and speak for themselves. Since about 2004 there has been a rapid shift in the public opinion across America. The popular opinion that gay marriage should be illegal in America has sharply dropped in the last ten years from 55% down to below 36%, and falling. Contrastingly, the opinion that it should be legal has risen from 41% in 2004 to over 58% today. And climbing.

Ages

Where is this opinion coming from? Well, according to statistics, the majority of the rise is attributed to America’s youth. The millennials contribute a staggering 81% in favor of the legality of gay marriage, as opposed to the 44% of those who are in favor over the age 65.

Do politics play a part? Certainly. As does religion of course. And yet regardless of conservatism and strict dogmatic ties, the youth is still bringing forth the turn of the tide. The generations over the years have been very clearly changing in their position and stance on the idea that all couples should be granted the fundamental and constitutional right to marry in this, a free country of tolerance and diversity.

Many have no faith in the millennial generation. They believe that integrity and responsibility is veritably non-existent in the course of their futures. Yet it cannot be argued that they are certainly the generation of change, be it for the better or the worse. In the capacity of this particular argument, for those who have gay family and gay friends; for those who have been too afraid to come out of the closet in the past and have done so recently because of the upswing of acceptance nationwide; for those people, it is certainly for the better.

I for one believe that my country, the United States, will legalize and recognize gay marriages in each of its 50 states in my lifetime.

100% Sexy: When Pride Becomes a Fashion Statement

by Greg Serebuoh

Power Is Sexy Shot

Tom Middleton

What do I love so much about 100%G?

Ever since I’d first heard about it, I had been trying to find the answer to that question. I met Peruvian photographer César Mansilla Sialer on a photo shoot for a swimwear campaign I was modeling for, and he was, as I like to say, the answer to all questions, so we stayed friends. It was César who first hipped me to 100%G (or OHP), a designer from his hometown of Lima.

Its design concept was straightforward. Skillfully cut, limited edition T-shirts made from soft, Peruvian cotton with simple words printed on the front.

Its online presence [NSFW] and marketing were equally straightforward. Witty and irreverent posts about boys, sex, and fun, pics of guys around the world sporting their gear, and campaigns that had a raw, DIY quality, like stealthy captures of those genuine, private moments, of modeling a new favorite outfit or dancing with total abandon in front of the mirror before a night out on the town (you know you do it too). Still, there was something more that drew me in.

It certainly helped that the face of its campaign was my old friend Tom Middleton, one of the former stars of Fuerza Bruta and current cast member of Hombre Vertiente. Tom’s devastatingly handsome looks, radiant smile, and tangible kindness made the shots effortlessly steamy.

The fact that the shirts framed the male form perfectly didn’t hurt either. And yet, there was more.

I still hadn’t figured it out, but I knew I had to be in on it, so I reached out to 100%G and ordered a couple of shirts from its latest campaign, “Party Animals.”

As I pulled my new shirts out of their packaging, reveling in the feel of the soft, smooth fabric against my fingers, my eye caught the writing on the inner printed tag: “One Hundred Percent Gay. One Hundred Percent Love.” G is for Gay? Apparently I had missed something key.

Pool Shot

I took a look at its website: “Made 100% for the gay community. In Lima, we noticed an absence of trendy, fun, cool clothes made with the gay person in mind. That’s when the idea for 100%G began. We make our shirts using 100% Peruvian gay cotton, some of the best fabric in the world.”

First of all, clap clap clap and snap snap snap for the use of the term “gay cotton.”

But seriously, as I got a glimpse into the thinking behind the brand, everything began to come together for me, and I found my answer.

I love 100%G because it is deliciously sexy. If you know me well, you know that I love sex, not only as a physical act in which to partake (often…very often) but also as an idea. Sex or sexiness for me has to do with a lot more than just naked bodies and dim lighting or indeed marriage and heavy promises. It is a basic energy that courses through all of life, and 100%G taps into that fundamental energy in order to encourage a different kind of (gay) pride, more human, more inclusive, more complex, less complicated.

Party Animals Campaign

The irreverence. The unabashed, playful sensuality. The unapologetic attitude, free of rigid definitions and precarious binaries. And the beauty. Real beauty. The kind that comes not just from a pretty face and a hot body, but from an easy smile, a mischievous nature, a relaxed poise. Beauty that isn’t afraid to get messy, silly, or frisky. Beauty that doesn’t take itself too seriously because it knows that it’s here to stay.

100%G says that it is “STRAIGHT FRIENDLY.” Of course it is. Because the sexiness that it ascribes to is the kind that Idris Elba can wear just as easily. Or James Franco. Or Legolas Greenleaf (proud geek here). Or Lupita Nyong’o. Or you. It’s the guys and girls that turn you on, not just with their looks or what they say, but with the titillating ease with which they live in their own space. An uncomplicated confidence that is flexible, free, and universal.

At the base of the blog entries, the campaigns, the aesthetic, and the fashion design is this basic principle. I interviewed 100%G to get a bit more insight into their vision.

Tell me how 100%G began.

OHP was born out of a design project created by El Cartel Design Ghetto, out of a need not only to create a product that was commercially viable but also to communicate an idea. We strive to use skillful design to represent a lifestyle. We want to represent the gay lifestyle in a fun and light way.

Your campaigns and your branding seem to have a very specific intention. What inspires your choices in that regard?

We openly celebrate gay lifestyles and the idea of facing everything with a positive attitude. It has been an interesting task since we are based in Peru, which is a really conservative country. Even so, we’ve been noticing an incredible trend in the country, thousands of guys are coming out of the closet, and we obviously wanted to do what we could to make sure they were well represented.

What does it mean to be sexy?

Sexy is being exactly who you are. It’s being true to yourself in words and actions. It’s being part of a multifaceted, global community. Sexy is being proud of who you are.

Tell me about your current campaign.

Our current campaign is in dialogue with the issues that face our community today. We’re using it to support 100% Equality.

HIV Equal- Amazing Cause & Event in Norwalk

by Ryan Shea

I had the pleasure of running into a personal hero of mine, former Project Runway and Volttage co-founder Jack Mackenroth, at the gym we both go to.  We got to talking and above being an amazing guy and inspiration he further introduced me to the work that he was doing in HIV awareness both locally and nationally.  I was delighted when he invited me to his event called “HIV Equal”. This was part of the LGBT Health and Wellness event that took place specifically at the World Health Clinicians headquarters in Norwalk, Connecticut.  This event was designed to bring awareness to HIV and HIV testing, specifically in younger generations.  During this event, we saw the “HIV Equal” photo campaign be launched, where several celebrities and gay icons had their photos on display in support of this amazing cause.  Some of the celebrities in the photos included AIDS activist Peter Staley, legendary drag queen Bianca Del Rio and Tony Award winner Billy Porter from “Kinky Boots”.

You couldn’t have asked for a nicer day to have an event like this.  I was fortunate enough to meet a ton of men and women from all sorts of backgrounds be it gay, bisexual, straight, transgender and so on and so forth who came together to help this fantastic cause.  We were all photographed by legendary photographer Thomas Evans, holding up signs that give us a unique spin on what our status is.  My status. Writer.  You can be anything you want in this situation, but as long as it is something that describes your support for this cause, it makes it a great thing.

“Our goal is to photograph people from all walks of life who support ending HIV stigma, regardless of their personal HIV status. We launched the campaign with celebrities, politicians, artists and many recognizable faces in order to draw attention to our mission, but we plan to include everyone since HIV affects us all,” Mackenroth explains. “HIV Equal goes a step further to include testing so that everyone photographed knows their status. We need to take care of ourselves and each other, as well as to reignite the global conversation about HIV to stop the spread of misinformation, fear and judgment.”

I can’t forget about the amazing host for the day, drag superstar Titania and DJ T-Boy who kept playing some of my personal favorites on top of the great food that was provided.  The whole mission of the day wasn’t about campy fun, food and drink and dancing though, it was about a cause for a disease that more people need to educate themselves about.  We are living in a world today where this disease is treatable, and I hope that at the young age of 27 that we are able to conquer this disease and find a cure for this in my lifetime.  For more information on this cause, hit up HIV Equal.

Brad & Dylan’s “Cutest Couple” moment- historic.

by Ryan Shea

original
Credit to: Tumblr

A picture can literally mean a thousand words, and in this case can be shared over 100,000 times.  A simple posting by a girl named Chelsea on her Tumblr page had that amount of shares in less than 24 hours.  You heard right, 24 hours.  The photo itself had a simple caption that read this-

“Two of my best friends won Cutest Couple of our senior class. First time in my school history a same sex couple has even been able to run for this category, not to mention winning it. So proud of them, and my school.”

Who was the most surprised out of all of this? Brad and Dylan themselves.  In a email written to The Huffington Post, they had this to say regarding the issue-

This whole thing has been a bit surreal for us because we have been raised to believe that love is love. We never realized that our happiness and openness would inspire so many individuals. The support we have received from our family, friends, and even strangers has led us to believe that our affection for each other is normal … When we started dating a year [ago], the thought of a photo of us traveling throughout the world would be a bit frightening, but now we are proud to be part of the LGBT community.

I wrote in the title of this article that it is historic for many different reasons.  One- regardless of what kind of high school and environment you have come from this is a huge shocker that they were even nominated for it, and two that they won.  What makes it amazing is how mature that particular high school was in choosing two people who just from the photo alone seem very in love yet their classmates viewed as just that and didn’t delve into homophobia or this being some gross prank that the senior guys pull for their own pathetic humor.

This may be a bit different but it has the same context.  When we did Homecoming King and Queen, the girl that won was usually the one that everyone expected to win and the guy that one was the “joke vote”.  I saw it happen pretty much every year and it made me disgusted that this form of bullying happened to something that was supposed to be nice and good for the man and woman that won it.  When I was a junior, there was an openly gay senior that was up for King and to many people’s surprise he won.  The football team looked devastated as the one they picked out to be thrown into the masses lost and for the first time in our school’s history a gay man actually won.  I made sure I screamed loud and proud to silence the haters and what made it even better was that he won authentically and didn’t stuff the ballot box like the others did in years past.

This rings true for Dylan and Brad.  I wish them nothing but happiness with each other and their own personal success.  If this is how the youth of this country are seeing people past all the homophobia that is out, then we have a good shot that this generation will be a great one.  Keep hope alive.

Diana Medley is a hypocritcal, homophobic moron.

by Ryan Shea

Here we go hypocrites, here we go.

Credit to: Rawstory.com
Credit to: Rawstory.com

An Indiana-based high school called Sullivan High has a group of people, including a special needs teacher, banding together to create a “straight-only” prom, which would prohibit anyone from the GLBT community from attending. The following is according to Time

as if I write it it would be filled with a lot of nasty comments (those to come later)-

The group met on Sunday at the town’s First Christian Church to discuss the possibility of holding a separate, segregated dance after the principal of Sullivan High, David Springer, told a local NBC affiliate that “Anybody can go to the prom” when asked to clarify whether same-sex couples would be allowed to walk in the event’s grand march, set to be held April 27.

“We believe what the Bible says, that it says it’s wrong,” Sullivan High School student Bonnie McCammon said to WTWO-TV. ”We love the homosexuals, but we do not condone what they’re doing.”

According to WTWO, one member of the group is a local special-education teacher, Diana Medley, who told the NBC affiliate, “I believe [homosexuality] is a choice. I don’t believe they were born that way. I think that life circumstances made them that way.” She says she works with students who come out to her and cares about them, even though she doesn’t “agree with them.”

I can’t even begin to figure out how much hypocrisy is really in this as it is truly mind-blowing.  So what happens if a gay person shows up? Are the police going to come outside and hose them down like what happened in the civil rights movements back in the 50’s and 60’s? Will dogs viciously attack them and will people chant “HOMO” and “FAG” if they try to go inside? Isn’t this 20 fucking 13 and this shit shouldn’t be happening anymore?

As far as Diana Medley is concerned, her last name suits her very well.  She is a medley of idiocy.  Her continued talks of how gays aren’t born this way and that it’s a choice is beyond disgusting yet hilarious at the same time.  Ma’am (i use that loosely), how would you feel about a prom that would bar special-needs students from showing up? What if one of your students is gay? How would that make you feel you fucking moron? I don’t get how people like this exist.  These are also the people that think gay marriage should be illegal as it goes against the sanctity of marriage.  Divorce rate is at 50 percent y’all.  Thanks straights.

There is a great petition you can find online that is calling for Diana’s termination.  Only 4,700 was needed but they already have 10,000.  Yay! Keep it going and watch this vile human being sit in her room stewing with her cats and wondering what her life will be like now that she’s figured out what an awful human being she is.  No remorse here for her or these students.  Grow up, open your eyes and get a grip.
