Gaby Brasserie Francaise- What is French for Delicious?

by Ryan Shea

Gaby Brasserie, Manhattan Digest

When it comes to dining in New York City, you have your endless amounts of cultural food experiences that you can enjoy in any of the five boroughs.  However, for the ones who work around the midtown area, you are left with a ton of chain restaurants and your run of the mill local deli which doesn’t exactly leave you wanting more.  Gaby Brasserie in The Sofitel New York on West 45th Street has proven itself to change your mind on how you can find a unique and delicious spot right in the heart of Midtown.  This spot bodes a ton of convenience for me as I work directly across from it and walk past it on a daily basis yet never went inside to experience just how amazing this place is.  Luckily for me, I got the chance to do some tastings last week with a good friend of mine and suffice to say we were both blown away by the technique, flavor and overall presentation of each dish.

The food was prepared by Sylvain Harribey, the hotel’s award-winning executive chef and a recent winner of the Food Network’s Chopped (one of my personal favorite shows.  I gotta find the episode that he was on!)  His friendly demeanor in presenting each course definitely gave me a better sense of the restaurant as a whole, which had a warm and inviting feeling to it upon entrance.  The first course, or the “Amuse Bouche”  that was presented to us was a Butternut Squash Cappuccino.  I am normally not a fan of Butternut Squash Soup due to how sweet it is, yet this was presented in a great duality of sweet and savory for sure.  Great balance and an overall great start to the meal.  For our appetizer, I got to experience for the first time in my 27 years of existence Foie Gras, which is the liver of a duck or goose.  As odd as it sounds, I was apprehensive due to this being a new type of food that I have never experienced before, but just like the soup I was pleasantly surprised by the taste of each way the Foie Gras was presented to us.  The first one was a Foie Gras spring roll with Prosciutto, fig and mixed greens.  The second was a Sesame crusted foie gras au torchon served on Brioche.  The third option was Pan Seared Hudson Valley Foie Gras over sweet potato mash with an Asian Vinaigrette.  All were delicious but I would have to say that the latter was my favorite due to the contrast of the mash with the Vinaigrette.

For our entree and sandwich courses (Because you really can’t have one without the other, right?) we were treated to two very different delicacies that were packed with flavor and punch in its own right. For the entree, we were presented with Oven Roasted Dijon Lamb Loin on a crushed white bean puree flavored with pumpkin seed oil, vegetable tian gratine (eggplant, zucchini, yellow squash, roma tomato, Provencal herbs and Parmesan cheese).  As odd as it sounds, my favorite part of this dish happened to be the gratine due to the enormity in flavor that Chef Harribey prepared for each of the vegetables.  Don’t get me wrong, the Loin was off the chain, but sometimes the supporting roles play just as much importance as the main star.  For the Sandwich, it was what they like to call the “Franburger”– Served on a crispy baguette with melted brie cheese, lettuce, tomato and Provencale fries.  I am not one for brie really on anything with the exception of a Ritz cracker, however it tasted really well and balanced with the burger and baguette.  I am a big fan of french fries, and the sprinkling of Provencale on top of them really made it tasty and balanced with the burger.

We were then treated to an assortment of mini desserts including Caramel Cake and Creme Brulee to name a couple.  Overall this was an astonishing meal, and I can totally see how Chef Harriby not only won “Chopped” but also runs such a successful establishment with some of the most professional staff me and my friend have ever experienced.  Overall, a 4.5 out of 5 stars in my book!

What’s even better is what they have planned for Valentine’s Day on Friday.  It is a Valentine’s Day menu so studded with aphrodisiacs it warrants a tongue-in-cheek “consume at your own risk.”   The seduction begins with an amuse bouche of East Coast oyster with shallot raspberry vinegar, followed by a choice of pan-seared Hudson Valley foie gras with sweet potato purée and fig sauce or an assortment of smoked fishes served with mậche lettuce, avocado, citrus and vinaigrette. For their main dish, patrons can choose Filet de Boeuf – a pan-seared Angus beef tenderloin with almond, cauliflower and potato purée served with grilled asparagus and topped with green peppercorn sauce – or Sole Roulade with basil salmon mousse, fennel and vegetable gratin, and a sauce of saffron and fine herbs. Dessert is a delectable Saint Honoré of raspberry mousse with crème chiboust topped with Grand Marnier sauce.

Sounds insanely yummy!  For more information on The Gaby Brasserie, be sure to visit their website!  Definitely a place to check out for Valentine’s Day and beyond!

Talde in Park Slope Brings the Flavor and More

by Ryan Shea

Manhattan, Manhattan Digest, Talde, Talde Brooklyn

I have been a big fan of Dale Talde for quite some time now. As someone who is an avid “Top Chef” fan, I saw his ferocious personality and cooking ability shine through in not only “Top Chef: Chicago” but also in “Top Chef: All Stars”, where he should’ve made it quite further in both seasons (IMO).  Now, with the help of the show and his own drive and determination, he has successfully launched his restaurant simply called “Talde” in the heart of Park Slope, Brooklyn.  “Talde” just celebrated its second anniversary of being open, and consistently has a packed house on a nightly basis, and is helping the thriving area of Park Slope become known for a foodie destination for all New Yorkers to experience.  I got to sit down with the Culinary Institute of America grad a couple of days ago to find out more about him and this fantastic eatery. Besito In Huntington Village in Long Island | Restaurant Reviews

by Ryan Shea

Manhattan, Manhattan Digest, Besito

Sure this website is meant for all things Manhattan but we can’t forget one of the greatest (and not so greatest) part of New York- Long Island!  As someone who grew up on the island of long I have faced my fare share of stereotypes that we Long Islanders face on a daily basis.  A consistent one seems to be that all we are is delis and chain restaurants.  Whereas I believe we have some of the best freaking delis in the world, we also have really good and authentic food that doesn’t come from your run of the mill chain establishment.  If you are looking for some damn good Mexican cuisine mixed with a downtown, NYC type vibe, Besito in Huntington Village is the place to go.

Restaurant Reviews

“Long Island’s Premier Mexican Restaurant,” Besito, “leaves the competition in the dust” says Joanne Starkey  of The New York Times. The authentic Mexican restaurant, translated little kiss in Spanish, is owned by veteran restaurateur John Tunney III, David Tunney & John Rieger. Besito Mexican Kitchen and Agave Lounge opened its first location in 2006 in Huntington, followed by the second location in 2007 in Roslyn, followed by the third location in 2009 in West Hartford, CT.  Both Long Island locations garnered “excellent” ratings from The New York Times, while the West Hartford location was named Best Mexican Restaurant by Hartford Magazine and Open Table’s #1 Mexican Restaurant in the New York/Tri-State Area.

I grew up right around Huntington Village and it always reminded me of the actual village area in New York, minus the annoying tourists and hipsters.  Although the restaurant scene and businesses in Huntington Village seem to change on a yearly if not monthly basis, Besito has managed to keep itself there for years running.  Not having been there in a couple of years, I was delighted recently to go with a good girlfriend of mine and see what all the fuss was about since I have been there.  Boy oh boy did they not disappoint.

Anytime you hear the worlds “Table Side Guacamole” you instantly get a happy face, I don’t care who you are.  Guac is life my friends, and their guacamole is truthfully delicious and packed with a ton of flavor.  Definitely a good starter in my book.  Another good appetizer for you and your team to much on is the Flautas De Pollo and the Empanadas de Hongos to name a few.  The Empanadas are quite fresh tasting and beat your everyday frozen type you can get at the supermarket by a long shot.  Same go with the Flautas, which is also known as a crispy type of chicken taco.  Both were quite delicious.

I think every meal on the entree menu deserves some type of Academy Award for how awesome it would taste in my mouth, however me and my friend chose two that suited that bill and beyond.  I’m a stickler for steak being cooked correctly and having a good amount of flavor and taste to it as if it is left alone can taste quite bland.  The Alambre de Res, or Strip Steak with Salsa Verde, Chorizo and rice, fit the spot completely.  But the standout dish for me and my friend was hands down was the Camarones Ajillo, which were jumbo shrimp cooked in a garlic chile salsa with a side of mashed boniato, their version of a mashed potatoes.  It was such a great mixture of savory, sweet and salty that blended really well together.  The beans and rice on the side are always a good addition to any meal, but what side really tasted incredible was the Elotes de la Calle, or roasted corn with Roasted Local Corn, Chile Molido and Queso Fresco.  Incredible.  Overall, this meal was quite phenomenal.

You also get a couple of churros on the way out which is the satisfying end to a great meal.   If you are ever in the Huntington Village area of Long Island, Besito is definitely something I would recommend going to.  A bit pricey for my demographics standards, but if you can afford it it is worth the dime.  Trust me.  Besito’s menu varies from lunch to dinner so check out the official website so more information.

Jacob’s Pickles is The Best Thing in the UWS. Period.

by Ryan Shea

Manhattan, Manhattan Digest, Jacob's Pickles

Over the past couple of months, I have tried to diversify myself in my writing by going outside the grain and start in the world of food reviews.  Many to all of the reviews I have done have been met with positive vibes but with a dash of constructive criticism to go along with it.  This is the only review I have done in 2013 where I can honestly say it was a perfect meal.  The place in question is Jacob’s Pickles, which is located in the heart of the Upper West Side.  Mixing comfort food with a relaxing environment, Jacob’s Pickles is the go-to spot for good food with a friendly demeanor and above all a damn good time.  Here is why.

Nick & Toni’s Cafe Brings Warmth & Taste to the UES

Nick & Toni’s Take Local & Fresh To A Whole Other Level

Ain’t nothing like taking an original and doing a spin off on it.  Nick & Toni’s is a prime example of that.  Already a success with their original location out in East Hampton in my hood of Long Island, they are talking the Upper East Side by storm with their warm and beautiful location on West 67th between Columbus and Broadway.  Nick & Toni’s is traditionally Italian meets Mediterranean flavor wise, with a menu that is consistently changing with the times.  My friend and I got to experience this location first hand a week or two ago, and we were pleasantly surprised to know a bit more about why this place is unique unlike most.

First and foremost, I am a huge believer in that you eat with your eyes first.  This includes ambiance and location of a restaurant.  The location is great, but the ambiance makes it that much nicer.  On a cold Friday night, the atmosphere was met with a warm, dimly lit surrounding with beautiful candles.  Marcy, who is one of the manager’s there, couldn’t have been nicer and more welcoming to me and my friend and went into great detail to explain each dish but most importantly why the use of local products was of the utmost importance to them.  She had mentioned that for a good portion of the food that we ate was from the “Greenmarkets” local to New York City.  What is a Greenmarket you ask?  Otherwise known as Farmer’s Markets, their goals are to promote regional agriculture by providing small family farms the opportunity to sell their locally grown products directly to consumers, and to ensure that all New Yorkers have access to the freshest, most nutritious locally grown food the region has to offer.  This is something that Nick & Toni’s seems to take pride in, and it showed in the food- especially the taste.

With my food reviews, I usually nit pick at each item and say what is good and what is bad with them.  This is the first review that I have done that i can truthfully say was flawless for the most part.  My favorite dish that Nick & Toni’s served me and my friend was their “Dock to Dish” special which was the Monkfish served with delicious brussel sprout leaves.  Keep in mind that i am a newbie when it comes to trying both, and they were both delicious.  Other stand outs on what we tried were the Bresaola: salumeria biellese with nugget potatoes from berried treasure farms and the cavalo crudo: pancetta made in house, tuscan kale from stoke’s farm, squash from the Greenmarket as available.  My favorite dessert they provided was the Fiori Di Latte Panna Cotta which had Grapefruit and Pomegranate intertwined in it.  Those were created in house by pastry Chef Jessica Craig.

Overall, the experience was great and I would definitely recommend going back for second’s.  Check out their official website for more, and be sure to stop by if you are ever in the neighborhood.

Whitman’s NYC Brings it With Burgers… and More

by Ryan Shea

Peanut Butter & Bacon on a Burger?  Say What?

As someone who considers themselves a pretty serious foodie, I am always on the lookout for what is next and big in the heart of New York City.  A couple of weeks ago, I stumbled upon this article on the website Thrillist which had a link devoted to what they thought are the five best burgers in NYC.  After quickly perusing the list, the one that really caught my eye was Whitman’s “Juicy Lucy” (See above photo).  It might have been my insane hunger urges, but I quickly made reservations to go to this lovely and quaint joint nestled in the East Village to test drive Ms. Lucy and see what else they had in store for my and my friend.

The place itself has an upstairs and downstairs seating.  The upstairs part looks pretty similar to a ton of other burger joints out there, but I loved the downstairs part as it reminded me oddly enough of being on a ship of sorts.  We were first treated to a bowl of their local pickles, to which I love as I happen to be a big pickle lover (Go ahead, “That’s What She Said”.)  Each of them had a distinct taste that was tart and sour and I happened to like each one.  We also split their wedge salad which tasted really fresh and had the most important topping of all toppings on it- Bacon.  Anytime you infuse bacon into something it is generally a very good thing, and this wasn’t a disappointment whatsoever.  So far, so good.

Then came the entrees.  I of course opted to try what Thrillist described so brilliantly about their “Juicy Lucy”.  This burger consisted of beef short rib, pimento cheese, caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato, spicy pickles and special sauce.  Overall I thought the burger was quite tasty and the special sauce definitely added a nice zing to it.  My friend tried something on a much different course, their PB&B burgers, consisted of two things you would never think would go together- peanut butter and bacon.  You got that right folks- Peanut Butter on a burger.  He told me that it tasted really well as he was just as shocked as I was about the flavor combination.  To compliment the burgers, they served us some really great fried Kale and homemade fries, which really worked well with the meal.  No complaints at this point as well.

To finish it off, they made us a ice cream cookie sandwich, and the cookies themselves were made fresh on the spot for us.  As odd as this sounds, that was my favorite meal out of all of them.  I love when you can taste the freshness in ingredients, especially sweets, and their cookie sandwich did not let either of us down.  Overall, a 9 out of 10 in my books, adding in that the service was phenomenal to boot.

If you are ever in the east village, go ahead and try Whitman’s out.  From this foodie’s perspective, as well as Thrillist’s, they are definitely one to watch out for when it comes to being one of the best burgers in Manhattan on top of so many other things.  Take a look at their website for further information.

The Nugget Spot- All Nuggets. All Day Long.

by Ryan Shea

Anybody who doesn’t love the taste of Chicken Nuggets I would deem to be truthfully insane.  They will always be yummy and delicious no matter what way you cook them in.  So when a fellow coworker of mine discovered there was a place that devotes it’s restaurant to all things nuggets, I had to go myself to see what all the fuss was about (not to mention my gleeful excitement over an all nugget shop.)  This place of course is called “The Nugget Spot” which is located in the heart of Union Square.  Here is a little background information on this amazingly unique place. Late Night Food & Fun at Pounds & Ounces

by Ryan Shea

We all have those late nights.  Whether it is hanging out with your friends at a great party until the end of the evening, or cramming for that upcoming final that we have, us Manhattanites know what it feels like to pull an all nighter in so many kinds of ways.  Luckily, there is a great restaurant you can go to that will ease your hangover or that last minute cram session with tasty treats and yummy drinks.  This of course, is Pounds and Ounces, located in the heart of Chelsea in New York City.  Since opening two years ago, P&O has earned the coveted title of neighborhood favorite thanks to its innovative cuisine, captivating cocktails, hip music and one of the liveliest ambiances in all of Chelsea.

For the first time, the P&O Chelsea kitchen will be open daily until 3 AM and offer a night owl menu starting at 11 PM. Hard-core party people know that keeping the festivities going requires serious sustenance and P&O’s new late night menu delivers. In addition to signature items from their regular menu, they have added Disco Fries featuring melted cheeses and homemade chicken gravy; spicy Jalapeno Poppers with Buttermilk Ranch dipping sauce; Angus Beef Sliders served on a pretzel bun with chipotle ketchup all for $7 or the Corned Beef Reuben starring the house-cured corn beef, braised Napa cabbage, Swiss cheese and thousand island dressing for $9.

The bar also rocks the night away with a special cocktail menu of boozy, adults only ice cream shakes like the No.1 with chocolate ice cream, bourbon, whipped cream and chocolate sauce; the No. 2 with vanilla ice cream blended with Baileys, Frangelico and butterscotch sauce and the No. 4 with vanilla ice cream, Pinnacle Strawberry Shortcake vodka and whipped cream.  And for those with fortitude and a sweet tooth, the house signature “Jacked” Banana Split featuring banana bread, your choice of ice cream, candy crusted and chocolate-dipped banana lollipops and a ton of whip cream is a gut-busting must!

I was lucky enough to try out the new menu with a friend of mine the other night, and needless to say- they do not disappoint.  We opted for two tasty appetizers on the late night menu- the mac and cheese with bacon on top (Bacon is life people) and the super delicious Tuna Tartare.  Both of them had sharp contrasts in tastes and textures, one of course being hot and the other one on the cold side, but both had an insane amount of flavor and kept our stomachs satisfied until the next course.

Moving onto the entree portion of the meal, my friend and I kept within the same speed of going after different types of foods that are designed for this kind of menu.  He went more on a brunch side with their Steak and Eggs, and I chose one of my favorite sandwiches in the world, the Reuben.  The steak was cooked perfectly and blended really well with the scrambled eggs that they provided.  The Reuben was chock full of yumminess, packed with a ton of corned beef and thousand island dressing which were just delicious.  The fries that came with both meals were tasty and salted to perfection.  We each finished off with two of their boozy ice cream shakes, I took the number two (not literally people), and he took the number four as listed above.  Both were creamy and great, but could’ve been a little more on the thicker side in my honest opinion.  Overall I would give this menu a 9 out of 10 for taste, 8 out of 10 for creativity, and 10 out of 10 for customer service and ambiance.

Definitely stop by Pounds and Ounces no matter what time of day it is.  You surely won’t be disappointed while you are there.  Check out the website for more information.  Happy Eating!

Sweet Spot at Philip Marie

by Jaime Kohl

You know you are home when you taste the love on the plate. When you walk into John Philip Greco’s second home, Philip Marie, you can feel that homey draw. You can taste the passion of the chef in each perfectly cooked muscle and shrimp that he will present to you. And if you have a palate that leans towards the sweeter side; you will find yourself a new regular spot.

Restaurant Quote

From the opening bite you can taste the sweet tilt of the meal. There was a cornbread that seemed like a cross between a bread and dessert piece. The warm, crumbling cornbread was sweet and grilled with a sweet butter sauce, but the crispy rosemary I truly enjoyed. I just needed more balance, maybe just some white pepper; and maybe something else. But none the less I did not want that level of sweetness to start out a long meal. But the crust on this bread and crisp rosemary was delicious….the rest just not as much.

Chef Grecoo officially opened up the meal with a perfectly balanced salad. Bitter arugula with sweet raisins, cranberries and currents in a warm Israeli couscous and beet salad; all dressed with bright lemon vinaigrette.  This was one of the highlights of the meal. Although there was sweetness in the dish everything was brought into balance. The bitter and sour notes sang just as loud as the sweet ones.

Salad

Next off was butternut squash soup with breadcrumbs. This bright orange soup was one noted and really in need of some additional flavors. Butternut squash is delicious and naturally very sweet and often needs acid and or bitterness or just something else to bring it together. The breadcrumbs did offer some salt and slight contrast in texture in the first moments that followed the food being presented; but quickly became soggy and quickly got lost.

Soup

Now these are a few of my favorite things; bacon, oysters, spinach and goat cheese. The Five Eastern Roasted Oysters with crispy bacon, creamed spinach and goat cheese presented on a bead of pink Himalayan rock salts provided some of the most deliciously flavorful bites. But, if I didn’t see the oysters with my own eyes I would not have known they were there. Now this is a delicious and savory dish; but the main ingredient was hiding at the school dance like a wall flower. I would order this again, but I wouldn’t need the oysters to be there.

Oysters

I couldn’t resist questioning the Captain Crunch crusted Mediterranean Sea Bass. I was wondering how anyone could keep this dish from turning into an odd dessert, but Chef Greco knew just how to do so. He crusted the branzino fillet with a mixture of captain crunch and panko breadcrumbs. It was served over some fresh tagliatelle with a tahini sauce and grilled fennel. The fennel and tagliatelle are delicious. I happen to love the way that fennel can transform with different heat applications. The grilling left a great char and caramelized some of the sugars in the fennel its self leaving and interesting and beautiful contrast to the sweet and tender fish. Although the tagliatelle and tahini were delicious they did not obtain the same marriage of flavor that some of the other pieces on the dish had. There was just something about the tahini that was not in line with the rest of the plate.

Sea Bass

The Tuesday night clam bake. Well this is just dam good. The broth that Chef Greco creates with the chardonnay base is the perfect base to permeate the delicious and fresh seafood.  Despite the perfect cook on the shrimp and muscles, the delicious half lobster (with all the major cracking of the shell taken care of) and clams, the broth stole the show.  The dish is the Tuesday special costing $18.95, and is served with a baked potato and corn on the cob; it’s a steal. There are nightly specials served and I look forward to trying the rest of them.  Be sure to check out the other nightly specials. And this winter there will be a great deal of game meats served as the winter menu arrives.

Clam Bake

Dessert was a vanilla pound cake with spiced poached pear, grand marine sauce and fresh dense whipped cream. The pears were delicious as was the sauce but the pound cake was just there as a contrast in texture; which was nice, but honestly not needed. I would have just loved a bowl of those pears and sauce.

Dessert

Chef Greco sat down with me for a little and shared with me some of his story. Philip Marie is the first restaurant Chef Greco opened, he also is the proud owner of 123 Burger Shot Beer, Bamboo52 Sushi Bar and Lounge and Posh Bar and Lounge. But Philip Marie is he’s first and your first always will have a special piece of your heart; and he proudly wears that piece of his heart on his sleeve as he cooks here.  He has a sweet tooth; if you do too, this is where you need to eat. The restaurant opened when John Philip and his wife Suzanne Marie Greco returned from their honeymoon and decided to go all in and sell everything they owned to opened up 16 years ago here in Manhattan; the restaurant turn over capital of the world. But with great effort the husband/wife team opened up their New American restaurant and they have been in the same place (where every other restaurant but one has come and gone) since 1998. This is a quality place that you can feel the warmth from the leadership to the table staff. It was a pleasure dining under Chef Greco’s guidance.

Pescatore- Traditional meets Delicious meets Happiness

by Ryan Shea

Pescatore and great food go together like Peanut Butter & Jelly.

I am the first person to admit that fish to me is never the first thing I am looking to order when I go to a restaurant that has a meat or pasta option on the menu.  So when I first heard of a place called “Pescatore” I had to mentally change my game palate up due to thinking that everything on the menu was fish related.  I was wrong, yet at the same time pleasantly surprised with the entire meal (which included some of the best fish I have ever had, more to come later).  My friend and I went there a week ago and were treated like kings in so many different ways.  Here is more about our great experience.

Pescatore itself has such a warm and friendly vibe to it that is nestled in the heart of Midtown East.  The service was spectacular throughout the meal, and I got a chance to talk a little more with the owner Charles Devigne, who is celebrating the restaurant’s 20th Anniversary this year (Congrats!).  He started us off with a bevy of appetizers, all of which were unique in their own right but had great depth of flavors to them.  My personal favorite was the risotto balls with the truffle aioli sauce, something that we got a sneak peek of because they aren’t currently on the menu! Hooray for behind the scenes access!  We were told this was something that was being placed back on the menu eventually, to which I agree with that decision.  Better yet, do it sooner because my mouth is watering thinking about how damn good they were.  One thing that my friend was a big fan of that didn’t really work for me was the ricotta cheese with chives, pease, hazelnuts, honey, and mint.  It might have been a bit much for my palate but it was still tasty to say the least.

We also were treated to two different types of pasta dishes. One was Linguine alla Vongole which included steamed little neck clams with Chorizo, green onions, toasted garlic and fresh parsley.  The other was Spaghetti Carbonara with pancetta, caramelized onions, pecorino and egg.  Once again, my friend and I had a difference in opinion as I thought the latter was better than the former, yet both were equally delicious.  It was just a matter of our taste buds.  Out of all the dishes that we had, hands freaking down the best thing from the entire night was the Chilean Sea Bass.  Chilean Sea Bass is one of the few seafood that I really enjoy personally, as it is foodporn to the umpteenth level.  I can say this was the best Sea Bass I have ever sank my lips into, and that is because the supporting cast really made the star shine.  The bass was surrounded by peas, porcini farro and brown butter vinaigrette with a cauliflower, currant and almond condiment.  So amazingly yummy.

Credit to: Charles Devigne

After all of that, the last dish that we had of course was dessert, which was a homemade cheesecake.  Delicious and then some.  Overall, an 8.5 out of 10 in my book.  Great place to go to if you want some hearty Italian cooking with an edge and an overall great environment.  Check out Pescatore’s official website for more information on menus and location.  Definitely worth the visit!
