Gay men make girls look like Mother Theresa. Yup.

I feel we owe it to ourselves to all fess up and say- Yup, I’ve been a bitch to that guy or groups of guys. We all have been. Now more than ever there is a strong vibe in our community that gay men start out like the nice Cady Heron in “Mean Girls” but end up being the vicious, backstabbing bitch that she becomes in the movie (sort of like Lindsay Lohan in real life. Ahhh, how art imitates). Yet, a lot of men tend to stay in the second zone without ever learning the life lessons which ultimately makes Cady likable in the end, especially breaking her plastic crown and sharing it with the rest of the crowd. When it did become so socially acceptable for gay men to treat each other with such disdain and rudeness yet millions of us are screaming to the straight world that we want to be accepted? We can’t accept each other. It’s beyond ridiculous. Here are some reasons behind this philosophy.

One- I was bullied growing up, so now it’s time to take revenge. I consider myself a fortunate gay man in the sense that growing up I was never bullied, called names like “fag” and “homo” in a serious matter and physically and/or emotionally abused like many other gay men and women were growing up. This could’ve been in and outside of the school, but this is something that they take with them the rest of their lives. This can incorporate itself in the gay community completely when you reach a certain age, find a group of guys to hang with, and become that group of mean girls we all hated back when we were growing up. In essence, you were becoming that guy or girl that bullied you and exacting it upon other people. Sure, it can make sense to you and some other people but really what are you getting out of it? In the grown world, these people never went after you, the ones that did it growing up did it for their own insecure reasons. Don’t turn that around and think that two wrongs make a right, cuz really they never do.

Jealousy. Bitterness. Resentment. Oh, he cheated on me. We had bad sex. I woofed at him on Scruff and he didn’t say thanks. I took him out to dinner once and he never got back ton me. Four of zillion reasons why we talk shit behind others backs. The best ones to me are when men talk about other men they have NEVER freaking met and act like they know them as well as their own family or best friends do. It’s human nature, I get it. We all talk about someone behind their backs. The reasons for men of a certain age to do it in this community once again come off as childish and immature. I had incident a couple of months ago where someone I knew from brief chats years ago decided to take it upon himself and ruin a couple of friendships of mine. Luckily, the two in question that he tried talking to were mature enough to understand the shit he was trying to pull, and didn’t let it phase them or our friendship. It makes me giggle though that people can be that insecure where something that was merely nothing three years back can still influence someone of a certain age to act like a 12 year old girl in order to prove a point. It gets to be a bit silly.

Maybe it’s just society that has led us to this conclusion. Is it just me or has Hollywood and the media in general embraced the bitchy gay guy? No, I am not mentioning if they are butch or queeny, that has nothing to do with it. I mean just purely mean and rude in every which sense of the way. From Jack MacFarland on “Will and Grace” to Anthony Marentino on “Sex and the City”, it sort of seems like there is a bit of typecasting which can lead to real life experience. Several reality seem to pitch the same concept, in particular “Big Brother” which I am a huge fan of. Every season (except for season 5) there is the bitchy gay guy. Really it just makes us look bad especially in the heterosexual world where they already have a preconceived notion about it. Yet as stated before, it can really lead to real life experiences in how we treat one another.

Listen, the moral here isn’t for us to hold hands, go to a yoga class and be super nice to each other because that would really make us look like a bunch of assholes. I just think that this treatment of each other can lead to serious problems within gay men such as depression, body issues and a ton of other things that can ultimately hurt who they are in the long run. Just think about what you are saying the next time you go to gossip. That’s all.

It’s Official: Citibike Has Launched!

If you haven’t noticed, the city has been taken over by Citibike users. Monday was the launch day for the Citibike program and this week is technically a preview week for annual membership holders. The Citibike blog has posted some stats on usage, popular stations, and trip details.

There’s also an app which you can download onto your mobile device to check out available bikes and docking stations in your area or around the city. As stated in my last post, Citibike is currently only available in Manhattan below 59^th Street and the downtown Brooklyn area (aka grown up Brooklyn). There are plans for expansion to all of Manhattan and the boroughs in the future. The Way We Wore

Over the past few weeks, Manhattan has been overwhelmed with gay bashings, culminating to murder near the Grey’s Papaya on West 8th street and Sixth Ave in the West Village. It’s shocking to hear that these hate crimes are being committed in our gayest neighborhoods. These casual criminals were as bad as the knock-offs on Canal street, getting caught within minutes of committing their crimes. In a status quo that set us back two decades, will it be safe for gays to don there most daring fashion choices?

Marc Carson, who was murdered in the West Village, was identified as being gay because he wore shorts and boots. He was targeted based on what he wore. This news was disturbing, since I liked to strut in the shortest shorts of the season. Such violence was expected in the Himalayas of Brooklyn. There are parts of Brooklyn like East New York or Flatbush where one wouldn’t dare wear pom pom shorts past happy hour for fear of being attacked. Yet this was happening in the movie making, celebrity filled Manhattan. Why the sudden change in a post Sandy world?

Religion and fashion went together like strangers giving out candy. I came to the city that never sleeps to practice my fashion choices in peace. What we wore, shaped and defined our lives. It was as essential as breakfast in the morning. I had no intentions to revert back to the political stylings of the nation’s conservatively dressed Capitol–where I was born and raised. A gay man’s right to shoes should be protected as well as skirts, kilts, and dresses–oh my!

It’s neither always sunny on Independence Day nor is it always snowing on Christmas. However, that didn’t deter me from wanting to see the fireworks while remaining completely dry. It also did not keep me from wishing for a White Christmas ever winter. We don’t live in a perfect world. The shenanigans of these shady thugs can’t force us back into the closet. Besides our wardrobes didn’t fit in the narrow cages that imprisoned their minds.

Is there is a way for us all to co-exist in an environment as diverse as the concrete jungle? There is no such thing as a life without conflict. However, we do have our gay-borhoods. So if one isn’t pro gay then stay out our neighborhoods and take that homophobia elsewhere. We have to try as people to be better than we were the day before. I embraced my freedom to wear black as often as possible. Skirts and dresses were my preference to layer over leather pants and skinny jeans, not my sexual orientation. I have the right to define my humanity, through the way I choose to dress in any city, borough or district.

Album Review: Daft Punk – Random Access Memories

With Random Access Memories, Guy-Manuel and Thomas Bangalter have created an album that is so meticulously detailed and expensively produced that it is essentially critic proof. At 320 kps, RAM is simply one of the best sounding records of our time, and it makes all other factors such as songwriting and originality seem far less important than they should be. It is not an exaggeration to say this is the new go to album when testing out the quality of a new set of speakers/headphones. Still, while critical reception has been, for the most part, very positive, this has to do with it being undeniably solid and pleasing to the senses rather than it being groundbreaking.

On first listen, it is easy to be disappointed – I for one was expecting something much more progressive. After the resounding amount of hype surrounding this release, it is slightly disheartening that 2/3rds of the record is made up of slow jams. As a whole, this is a record that is neither as fun as Homework, nor as revolutionary as Discovery. Instead, RAM stands on its own within the group’s discography, and in its own way, it ends up being just as impressive as the duo’s previous landmarks.

Obviously, this is a record that looks to the past for inspiration, and here we get to see the duo wear their long time influences on their sleeves in spectacular fashion. Many of the duo’s long time influences even take part in songwriting credits and vocal duties. The concept of the album is about living in the sounds of the past to arrive at a new destination that encapsulates the spirit and energy of a time long gone. This is most present in the Todd Edwards sung title track “Fragments of Time”, where he repeatedly sings /I’ll just keep playing back, these fragments of time, everywhere I go, these moments will shine/ during the chorus. Unfortunately, that song ends with a Peter Frampton like vocoder guitar solo that is one of the few instances where the sound comes off as being nearly pastiche. Most of the time, the album plays true to this theme of reinventing the past while still sounding modern and fresh.

The list of collaborators that took part in the construction of RAM is sprawling, and representative of an array of genres spanning multiple decades. A whole lot of talent, such as Nile Rodgers’ disco infused guitar work and Paul Williams’ emotive, almost broadway vocals, is showcased throughout the hour plus running time. Some of the most interesting collaborations come with newer artist’s such an Noah Lennox and Julian Casablancas lending their gifts to the sounds of 70’s and 80’s house music. While a look at the production credits would leave one to believe the album would be a clusterfuck of auto-tuned vocals and incongruous harmonies, it is to the producers credit that the opposite is true. In fact, the pairings are often so smooth and nuanced that the results seem far too natural and human for a group as robotic and mechanized as Daft Punk.

While Daft Punk has always been cheesy in their own delightful way, here they have taken more than a few steps into adulthood. After all, these are two grown men who are pushing their mid 40’s; so it is no wonder why they have thrown out many of their less mature charades. However, some of the cheesiness that fueled their earlier work still has a lingering presence – it is during these moments where the album occasionally falters, as we feel they aren’t in on the joke of how silly some of this music is. One such instance that calls to mind is the album’s miraculous and spectacle worthy “Touch”, which is almost ruined when Paul Williams sing’s /Touch sweet touch, you’ve given me too much to feel, sweet touch, you’ve almost convinced me i’m real/ in a disastrous cry of self pity that proves way too broadway for this reviewer.

Above all else, this is an album in the truest sense of the word. It is meant to be listened to in unison, and after it sinks in, you could easily live with this music for weeks on end. Best represented by Giorgio’s voiceover on “Giorgio by Moroder”, RAM is an album about disco rather than a disco album – not unlike how DJ Sprinkles fantastic “Midtown 120 Blues” was an album about the classic deep house scene. Daft Punk have perhaps created the most expensive music history lesson of all time. Although the effect it will have on the future of music is uncertain, as of now it is an absolute essential to any music lovers catalogue.

My interview with Modern Bear’s Travis & Chris- WOOF!

I have been a fan of the Modern Bear guys for quite sometime, when I stumbled upon their website through a photo my friend shared not of a hot bear, but of a particular “modern” design photo that I had a similar interest to. My thought process here was, “Finally! A bear page not 100 percent devoted to shirtless men. There is thought behind this!” And that is what the Modern Bear message is truly about. They equate it to the following- Modern Design + Bears + Retro + Beefcake= THE MODERN BEAR! Travis Smith and Chris Bale, who are based out of Palm Springs, California, visited the Urban Bear festival a couple of weeks back and I got the opportunity to talk with them about a variety of things they have going on currently. Something I definitely wanted to mention was their fantastic new book called “Guide For The Modern Bear”, where they visited a variety of cities and found where is the best places to eat, shop and bar hop for the everyday MB (Modern Bear). Take a look.

So Travis, how did this whole “Modern Bear” thing start for you guys?

It’s a combination of starting it three years ago, so that was a really good time to be starting a good commercial Facebook page anyway. It was an experiment for us, a petri dish if you will, to see if anybody was interested in a “Modern Bear” concept and our formula of modern design plus bears plus retro plus beefcake. Those are the things we like. It was a free way to put it out there, and see if there was any interest in that concept and then determine if we should go further with it and produce a book and all the other things we ended up producing. There wasn’t an immediate response to it, but I would say in the last six months we added 5,000 people. It took us the past three years to get to 25,000 fans overall.

What is that increase in fans attributed to?

I think the bear thing is going mainstream, we are kind of last to become part of this trend thing. I think you will be seeing a lot more bears popping up in movies and television. Like Anne Hathaway’s best friend role in her next movie will go to a bear. It’s starting to happen. That’s one of our goals is to get a TV deal, but doing the book first is the perfect baby step for us because by processing and writing the book it also helped formulate what Modern Bear was going to be as a commercial entity.

Tell me about the book you just released.

What we love about the book and how it turned out is how accessible it is. A lot of straight people buy our book. Wives and girlfriends approach us and say “What is my boyfriend? Is he an otter? A wolf? WHAT IS HE!” It’s hysterical. It’s really funny when the book is at shelves, children gravitate toward it because it’s really cute looking of course. The shop owner usually has to explain to parents what it really is about, and sometimes they even buy it.

Chris, tell me more.

Well, the book is a hybrid. It’s a guide to all the different characters in the bear world. You got your straight up bears, you got your muscle bears, cubs, wolf like me. We are going to do this book every year and update it like so. Each of these characters right now lives in a different city and talk about the bear bars, a few places to eat both fancy and low brow, you know for the bears who want their diner food. The Modern part is mid-century modern furnishing and the stores in each place. So you got Miami, Los Angeles, New York and Barcelona and London to name a few. In the future we are going to have Vancouver and Phoenix which is actually where this whole thing started.

As an avid New Yorker would you say it is the best place to eat from your research?

Well, we did ELMO which is the best Mac N Cheese in town. Let me refer to the book actually! The Breslin is really good. That is this amazing restaurant in the ACE hotel. The Shake Shack is amazing, and Westville is my favorite place for Breakfast. We had a super cute experience at Kitchen last night. We had comfort food like Fondue which was yummy.

What are you ultimately hopeful for?

Well, we’ve always joked about being Beartha Stewart. We are two bears, a bear and a wolf, that are into design and into hot men and bringing those two worlds together in any which way we can.

Racism in the Bear Community- More Prevalent than Ever

Off the bat, there is going to be a variety of opinions regarding this matter yet I feel like this is a very taboo subject to talk about. It is an issue that just like some of the more mainstream issues that we face in America will never really have one agreement on it. The fact of the matter is for many people that I know of and a general consensus that I have seen, racism is a huge part of the bear community. For me, this racism comes in many different forms, some of which I have experienced and some others have as well. Comet Madmen releases epic “SXSW Mixtape”

Something that seems to be missing from the hip-hop industry nowadays is the raw, gritty aspect of what hip-hop was in a way designed for. This attributes back in the day in the early 90’s when acts like NWA came out with “Straight Outta Compton” and made people think that hip-hop was more than just a chilled, pop-esque sort of type music that anyone can listen to. When that music came out, things changed. Comet Madmen repping Long Island to the fullest is set out to the do the same thing and take the music world by storm.

Already a big success here in the tri-state area, I interviewed Comet a couple of months back about his meteoric rise in the hip-hop industry and what it was like to work with legends in the game like Party Arty and his hopeful dreams of working with legends in the game like Nas. Well, Comet has done something pretty extraordinary for someone around these areas- he got the chance to perform at the world famous “SXSW (South By Southwest)” festival held every year in Austin, Texas. The event this year was more epic than ever, and Comet helped bring the hip-hop edge to that festival in more than anything.

Not only did he perform, but him and Mad Men Entertainment, which he runs, have released a 28 song mixtape simply titled “SXSW Mixtape” which features the best of the best from SXSW. He brings it in the introduction and outroduction, as well as other amazing songs such as “Skit” and “Ambitions of a Rider”. On top of Comet’s fantastic appearance on the record, it also features the likes of hip-hop megastar Kendrick Lamar as well as Action Bronson, Spit Gemz and Sean Price. All something that you can jam to while cruising in your car for the holiday weekend to summer to beyond.

UEFA Champions Viewing Party Yesterday- Cheers and Beers

One sport that is celebrated on a global scale yet not as much on a local scale here in the United States is Futbol, otherwise known as Soccer. Yesterday, that couldn’t have been far from the truth. Heineken and Remezcla, who focus on providing a local guide to the best in Latin culture, brought together thousands of die hard soccer fans for the “UEFA Champions League Final Viewing Party” yesterday at Pier 36 on South Street in Basketball City, right outside Brooklyn.

The look and feel of the venue made you feel like you were walking into the arena. There was one section sort of designed like an airport terminal, with crisp white couches at your every convenience as well as multiple televisions screens and several bartenders at hand passing out free Heinekens for the viewers. It was heavily designed in green to coincide with Heineken’s signature colors and featured several hostesses dressed in color patters that echo Heineken as well.

That was one side of the event. While walking through to the other side, they then designed it to make you feel like you were walking into freaking Wembley itself and that you were apart of the game. As I was walking in I could hear the roar of the crowd at hand as the game had gotten underway about fifteen minutes into it. That aspect of the venue was gigantic as the game played on one of the largest television screens I had ever seen and witnessing people root for either team or just there to have a good time. They had a fantastic local German bakery that served us some of the most delicious Bratwurst I have ever tasted which went down really well with the endless Heineken at hand.

The two teams playing at hand in the UEFA finals were rivals Bayer Munich and Borussia Dortmund in a thrilling ninety four minute spectacle of a game that in the last two minutes saw Munich pull ahead 2-1 due to it’s star player Arjen Robben making a last minute goal.
It was a moment of long-awaited deliverance for both Bayern and Robben, after defeats for the Bavarians in the final of the competition in 2010 and again in 2012, when they lost a cruel penalty shoot-out to Chelsea on home soil. Robben had set Bayern on the way to victory after an hour of the first all-German final when he teed up Mario Mandzukic for the opener, only for Ilkay Gundogan to equalise from the penalty spot in the 68th minute.

Before, during and after the game they had a sick DJ perform some current club bangers such as “I Don’t Care” by Icona Pop and everyone’s favorite “Harlem Shake” by Brooklyn’s very own Bauuer. The festivities went on from about 1 in the afternoon to about 7:30 at night, and from the looks of it everyone seemed to have a really great time including me and my friend.

Many Happy Returns: Arrested Development

Arrested Development Season 4: On Netflix starting Sunday, May 26 @ 12:01am Pacific Time

When we last left off: It was seven long years ago when Arrested Development was canceled by Fox and burned off as counter-programming to the opening of the 2006 Winter Olympics. In that time, the show picked up a rabid following on DVD (Arrested Development is probably the first show that truly benefited from the binge-watching model, as it allowed for call backs to be salient in the viewers mind instead of going dormant each week). Additionally, rumors for a potential movie ran rampant for a number of years, while many of the cast members moved on to pursue greater fame and a large number of projects, the most notable being Jason Bateman and Michael Cera’s ascensions to movie star leading man status. Finally, a little company called Netflix went from being a DVD by-mail company and grew into a streaming Goliath that decided to get into the process of making its’ own TV (such as the earlier Kevin Spacey vehicle House of Cards).

In terms of the show’s internal storyline, the third season finale “Development Arrested” closed off many of the show’s major plot arcs. All of the charges against George Sr. were ultimately dropped when it was discovered that the U.S. Government’s two CIA branches didn’t know what the other was doing. Michael once again got passed over for the CEO position, leading him to leave for Mexico with George Michael. Meanwhile, Maeby was busy trying to get the family to sign away their likenesses for the rights to her story while Lucille was trying to ensure that no one sold their company stocks.

The show however, left one new avenue open: While the charges were dropped against George, our finale had the SEC coming after Lucille, whom we had discovered had masterminded much of George’s fraud and embezzlement schemes in the first place. A second, and potentially interesting angle arose from the reveal of Lindsay being an adopted daughter, adopted by George and Lucille with the sole purpose of spiting Stan Sitwell.

What I’m looking forward to this season: First and foremost, it’s new Arrested Development! While I occasionally watched the show when it was on FOX, I became hooked when a friend lent me the full series on DVD when I was living at school. Since that time I usually binge watch the series about once a year, so the idea of new episodes excites me!

To me, the most interesting part about this season is that whereas the original series was very strongly serialized and in chronological order, the events of this season will occur simultaneously, almost making the season feel like one jumbo sized episode when viewed holistically. While creator Mitchell Hurwitz feels the first run-through of the new season should be in run order, he envisions later viewings being akin to a choose-your-own-adventure style TV series, where people jump from one episode to another in order to see all the intersecting lines.

What I’m concerned about: One word: expectations. The expectations for this show’s return are at a fever pitch considering the fan outcry for new material for a number of years, and I wonder if expectations are going to be so high that no matter how amazing season 4 ends up (and trailers are indicating I won’t be moving from my couch this weekend) that it won’t stack up to all of the expectations.

What was your Inspiration behind Technori

Well, 2009 was a rough year for me. In 2009 both with my business and my personal life fell apart. It was at that moment that I realized my need to be part of a community where I could meet people and make friends. I needed a community in general, as I was a recluse. When I looked at the community I noticed the entrepreneurial community in Chicago lacked events for the burgeoning tech industry. Technori was started with four other people. We threw up a website and started doing interviews with great entrepreneurs and the reaction was positive from day one. Readership was instantaneous and people wanted more. It was the right thing at the right time.

What challenges did you face changing gears when turning Technori into a business?

Technori wasn’t started as a business. Technori was started because Technori needed to exist. Technori has transformed into a business to cover it’s own costs and in a way it’s a win-win. Technori now employs people and pays for itself. The summer of 2012 was when we decided it would be a business.

When did you know you wanted to be an entrepreneur?

I started young. Creating contraband others would buy in high school. I have always had the instinct where I needed to generate my own money and be in control in of my own destiny. I had authority issues. I barely graduated high school. I dropped out of college. I liked figuring things out. I liked never relying on someone for a paycheck.

It was either living in my parents’ basement as a bum or become an entrepreneur. I chose the latter. My professional career began with building websites around 18 -19 years old, these were mostly for small businesses and I was not charging real money.

What does it take to be considered for Technori pitch

We are trying to find companies that are as close to launching as possible. Giving them time to launch and then having them pitch is usually the best. We are looking for companies on the cutting edge. Doing something different. Either building a new business model or play on old. It has be something they can present quickly and concisely.

What advice would you give new entrepreneurs?

There are too many things that come to mind for me to narrow it down. Embrace your idea like your life depends on it. Be ready to risk everything, don’t be afraid, and remember that once you start down this path that paying your rent on time is going to be tough.

Pick a co-founder incredibly wisely. It’s as much like a marriage as they claim. You cannot pick your family but you can pick your business family. You will spend dramatically more time with these people than you think. Don’t just jump into a business relationship. Picking a bad partner happens so often that I think repeating this advice is always falling on deaf ears.

Getting to a point where you can test your concept is good before you spend a lot of time and money seeing if it’s viable. Walk the streets and try to get $5 out of someone’s pocket into yours before you lock yourself into a basement for 6 months to build something unproven.

If you could have one super power what would it be?

I don’t know. Being a geek I’ve thought about this for decades now and… I don’t know! Oh, how do you define super powers? Wouldn’t you want something like Magical Powers? I could then cast whatever I want. If there were spells you could use to gain super strength and speed then I would just choose Magic Powers. If not then I would choose flight. I would want to fly fast, like Superman fast! I would go on some unique vacations. I would leave work at 5p.m. and by 5:15p.m. I would be in Honolulu on a beach somewhere.

Whats next for Technori?

We are focused on being a National Publication. We are trying to build the best starter community in the world. That means everyone, including Non-profits and project-oriented folks. Those who don’t find the word entrepreneur fits them don’t seem to get the respect from traditional publications that they deserve. Technori wants to give them the articles and attention they deserve. We feel like we have the opportunity to do that. We feel like we can move beyond the online community and can publish books. Beyond that, Technori is going abroad and building an international presence. We want to find starters on every continent and get them involved in the brand Technori.

We want to create a movement that can last. One that is here in 20 years. That’s a giant challenge but I think we can do it. It all started 4-5 months ago when we changed direction from Chicago only to an international audience. You will see the changes shortly.
